    1. Re: Ancestry/AOL problems
    2. Well, I keep seeing this message about all the problems. I have cable modem and when I go through direct to Ancestry.com with internet explorer it is fine and fast. When I use my AOL(still through cable modem) I more often than not get the slow response and blank screen. I feel this is a AOL problem. They deny it, but 6.0 added a lot of garbage it does not need. I have had problems with AOL since upgraded (on two computers). I wish I could go back to 4 or 5.0. AOL tech support is not very up to date either. As for Ancestry, I just wish they would quit giving away free databases. I have paid for services I cannot get because so many on the free service, especially nights, weekends and around Christmas was a real pain!. Well I have given my two bits. Now lets get back to genealogy.

    2. Thank you to everyone who responded to me, also, about the ancestry.com site. I think I have had problems since I first subscribed to them. Maybe they are the problem. Thanks, Phyllis Mistrot

    2. It could be your phone line has a bad connect. I live in area with underground phone cables and they have been flooded a few times. It was about to drive me crazy working on computer until I found out the phone lines get crossovers every time weather is wet. The connect speed drops from about 44,000 to 50,000 which is normal for a 56K modem down to about 9600 and then they disconnect due to poor line quality. I have to call phone company after every rain and they come out and clear their lines, then next rain, the same problem again. Earl D. House

    2. I just want to thank everyone for their advise. I do plan on getting a new computer some day soon (but I can't access Dell's inventory either due to my computer problems and I hate dealing with salespeople, but I will call them one day soon). I owned a new Compaq for 2 weeks, but it couldn't maintain an internet connection and took it back to the store after a $75 open box fee. Now I won't get a Compaq. I have tried to install AOL 5.0, but it requires Pentium, which I don't have. Thanks for listening to my frustration. I hope the websites realize the access problems also. Now back to genealogy!! 1. Re: Genealogy Websites
    2. Dear Frustrated, Just for the record. YES, there is a version of 5.0 AOL that will run on a 386/486 computer as I am doing so on my backup computer. It is well hidden in the 5.0 CD. I had to call AOL to let them help me load it. When I log into it it will automatically update itself. Secondly, for those site addresses you cannot get to any more, Check out Cyndi's list for current Web Addrs. AND all that FREE online genealogy data is paid by someone. FTM is a "for profit" center as is Heritage Quest. What did we do 10 years ago when we had to PAY someone to do research for us. Currently AOL has 27 million users and they all want to access Ancestry, Heritage Quest & FTM when I am there. LLoyd McDaniel Nat Archives & Records Admin Laguna Niguel, CA

    2. NOT GENEALOGY - SITE ACCESSING PROBLEMS There was something about this in the paper not too long ago. Someone had complained about all of AOL's updates and the reply was that "yes, you could stop them, but why would you want to?" The web sites themselves are constantly changing and adding on as new technology comes along. AOL updates constantly to keep up with the changes and all the new bells and whistles the web sites use. Can you get AOL updates on 4.0? Do you have a firewall in your computer? If so, can you get rid of it? Do you have Windows or a Mac? What version of Windows are you running? If at all possible, could you pick up a used Pentium? The classifieds are loaded with them. Other than that, try getting up around 2:00am and try then. The internet is much quieter and the traffic load much lighter. You might have a better chance than of accessing the sites you want. If you have to use AOL 4.0 I think you are stuck with not being able to access various sites. The sites themselves are changing and the various ISP's have to keep up with the changes. When you complain it's always the other guy's fault... neither AOL's fault or the site owners' fault. I guess it's no one's fault but technology itself. This isn't a problem with just the bigger genealogy sites; it happens with the smaller ones also. I have found that when I can't access a site, which happens a LOT, I'll try the refresh button. If that doesn't work, I delete the screen that tells me I have an error 505 or whatever number pops up and go to the top where the URL is and click the GO button. If that doesn't work, I check the URL and see if I can shorten it to the .com then try again. If I still can't get into the site I want I stop trying and go back and try later. if I can't get to that site later and it's something I really want to see, I'm stuck. I do think that if you can scream or cry it helps!<g> Whacking the computer out of pure frustration seems to help also.......not to get into the site, but you feel better even though your hand hurts!<G> The problem generally seems to happen when the internet is busiest and on the weekends. I'm up very early and have no problems with accessing sites until approximately 6:00am, then the slowdown starts. Weekends are horrible for access. School vacations are horrible for access. I would assume that other ISP's are the same. I finally downloaded a program to speed things up and it will work well until I hit the heaviest user hours. Another computer article in the paper (Tampa Tribune) made the comment that AOL is now so massive it can't keep track of itself. I've also noticed that AOL seems to LOVE to update during the busiest times, right before school and work and right afterward. Everytime it updates, I crash and lose whatever I was working on. I have now learned to keep an open email addressed to me with the URL's and hyperlinks of whatever pages I'm working with. At least that way I can go back to the same spot and/or backtrack and do the work over again. I haven't lost that site. I also believe that AOL filters what you can and can't see, contrary to what AOL itself says. They blatently do so regarding the various IM services and will admit to that. There are some sites that I KNOW are there; I KNOW I'm using the correct URL, and I can't get into them. I get the response that the site has probably changed it's address. I know I have email that never reached me. I will get something from this list referring to another email.....but I never received that email. I'm not sure if that's AOL or all ISP's. 1. Slow Response
    2. I have had problems with very slow or 'unavailable pages' when trying to use ancestry.com. They tell me that it is AOL and not their website. We have AOL 6.0 but have always had problems with slow response at ancestry.com, even going through another search engine. Lately, I have gotten a 'DONE' with a blank page or 'no hits' when I have gotten a family name to come up before. Phyllis Mistrot

    2. In response to problems with Ancestry.com on the SNYDER-L@rootsweb list... In the last 6 months, as websites have made changes, one by one I am losing the ability to use most of my favorite genealogy websites. Some I can't get into at all and others scroll so slowly that they are frustrating to use, and others throw domain security warning and shut my computer down. Because I don't have Pentium, I have to run AOL 4.0. This is a list of the genealogy websites I can't access properly any more: familysearch.org - can't get into at all any more familyhistory.com - domain security warnings and shut downs worldconnect.com - what is with that blue line?? and slow familytreemaker.com - scrolls very slowly and too much selling of cds genealogylibrary.com - opens with public screen vs. member screen ancestry.com - domain security warnings and shut downs These used to be great websites and I really miss them. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

    3. Thank you for your email regarding the House family in New York. I am very interested in this subject and would love to correspond with others looking at the House family. I have a database of House families in New York and Michigan during the 18th and 19th centuries. It is posted on Rootsweb World Connect and contain nearly 3000 persons. I am continually adding names. I have all the Houses that were in the Michigan Federal Census of 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1900. I will be adding New York 1880, first names A-J this week. My primary area of concentration has been in Allegan and Kent Co., MI and Orleans and Monroe Co., N.Y. I am seeking the parents of Frank L Houes/Howes/House who was born in Monroe Co., NY in 1830. His father may have been James Howes. This is about my brick wall. These 2 people are my great grandparents. I have been searching for information on them for 19 years and can find nothing on them. Hi, Do you have a Sarah J. Ricketts in your line. Her father was Dock Ricketts born in CA and her mother was Rachel Daniel born in TN. She was born Mar 27.1854 in MO. She died Feb 17, 1928 in Springfield, MO, Greene County and is buried in East Lawn Cemetery in Springfield, MO. She was married to John G. House who was born in ILL. Sarah was married 4 times before she died. When she died she was married I believe to a W. T. Haskins. Her grave marker still says Ricketts on it though, I think another of her husbands was Friel H. Wentz or (Wince). Some of this is for certain to me but some isn't. Some of this information came from my grandmother Hallie Pearl's death certificate. I did find a Sarah J. 3. Hi: I am looking for a connection between the names of House, Andrews and McFeely. Arthur Andrews married Sarah McFeely in 1831, in Butler Co., OH. Both were supposedly born in OH. They named their second son Joel House Andrews. I feel that House would be a surname. I have not been able to locate the parents of Arthur Andrews. I feel that Sarah's parents are Thomas and Elizabeth Rogers McFeely although I have not been able to prove that. Any help greatly appreciated. Debbie

    2. Howard Ray Lawrence
    3. My great grandparents were married in 1862 in Detroit, Michigan. My great grandfather (SHARP) mustered in Michigan, and fought at The Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. My great grandmother (HOUSE) was a widow, marrying (SHARP) for a second time, in Detroit. However, she (a HOUSE surname) lived in Pennsylvania, and had married a Pennsylvanian (a MOSES or MOSAS surname) prior to her second marriage (to SHARP). Is there anything in these circumstances that relates to your SHARP family? I cannot find records for these parents of either of these Canadian-born SHARPs or the HOUSEs. I suspect that their parents were born in the american colonies, possibly Michigan or Pennsylvania. Please advise me.
