Heres a question that will probably get things rolling! There seems to be disagreement over which House lost an arm in the Battle of Charleston during the Revolutionary War. Ive seen Mark House and also his son Elias. I was thumbing through my House folder and found Sophia Houses (Eliass granddaughter) obituary in a North Carolina newspaper. The obituary mentions that Sophias father, Jacob, was the one who had lost an arm in the Battle of Charleston in the Revolutionary War. Since Jacob was born in 1793, this seemed highly unlikely. But when I searched further, I found a handwritten note from my grandmother saying Jacob had fought in the War of 1812, and his father, Elias, was the one that lost the arm in the Revolutionary War. I also received email from another researcher who said that she had a copy of Eliass war pension and he states he was the one that lost the arm (I have this awful mental picture of the scene at the Atlanta depot from Gone With the Wind!) And comments? Tim
List, I have a g grandfather by the name of Elias(Eli)House. His father, Peter House(b.1820, N.C)married Elizabeth Smith. Peter was actually married 3 times, first to Polly Smith and last to(can't remember her name). Peter was the son of Jacob House(b.1795). Jacob House and his wife, Elizabeth Freeze came from Rowan, Salisbury Dist. of N.C. They had 10 children. My g grandfather Elias House, married Jenny(Virginia Isabelle)Dunavant(Donovan)and they had 5 children. Their only daughter, Myrtle Ellen, was my grandmother, who married John Quincy Adams. This House/Adams family lived in and around Duquoin, Perry Cnty., IL. John Quincy was born and raised in Union Cnty., IL. There were many House's related to this family in Perry Cnty. Ginny Adams Pierce Willow, Alaska
Mark House (Haus) was born in Germany and emigrated to PA. He eventually moved to Mecklenberg Co, NC, where he died in 1789. He names two sons in his will: John and Elias. Both John and Elias had sons named Jacob. Elias served from NC during the Rev War and received an invalid pension (he lost an arm). Elias is supposed to be the father of the Jacob who m. Sarah Barringer. The information I was given said that Elias' son stayed in NC and John's son moved to IL but maybe the person who did this got it backwards?? Also, I have one article that says Elias died in Union Co, IL, and another place says Perry Co, IL. This is not my line; it is just information I have found while looking for Archibald House in NC. Good luck, Phyllis Mistrot
After a two-year hiatus, decided to get back on the list. Have been working on my line again and am working on a Sophia House (1823-1921) who married Jacob Ludwig and lived her entire life in Cabarrus county, NC. Sophias father was Jacob (1793-1889) who married Sarah (Sally) Barringer and they also lived in NC. Heres where it gets shaky. I recently came across something on the LDS site that says Jacobs father was Elias House (1767-1826) who was born in Cabarrus County NC but then moved to southern Illinois, evidently without some of the children. Elias seems to be the son of Mark House who was born in Württemberg, Germany, emigrated to PA, and then moved to NC. I had saved some of the old messages from two years ago figuring Id get back to them someday. After started up again on the Houses and also looking over some of the old messages Id saved, I realized that I had deleted all those messages on the Houses that had moved to Illinois, thinking they werent my line (ah, the mistakes we newbies to genealogy make!). Is anyone presently working these lines? Can anyone fill in what happened to the Houses that moved to Illinois? Am I correct in saying that Jacob was the son of Elias? I promise to keep my fingers away from the delete key this time. Tim
Hi Jim, Are you related to 'Col.' Edward Mandell HOUSE? He was my gg uncle. His sister, Mary Elizabeth, was my g-grandmother. I know lots about his father, T.W. HOUSE, but am having trouble tracking down T.W.'s baptism in Stoke St. Gregory, Somerset, England. I have been put in touch with quite a few cousins over the past year, and we are all working on finding T.W.'s parents. The Holland story is probably true, but it was many years before they went to England. I have heard that this family was in England for about 300 years. Thanks, BHudock224 for the info about the Handbook of Texas Online. It has some wonderful information there, only not T.W.'s parents. Someone from a different HOUSE line says she has seen his baptism, but did not copy it. I myself and other cousins in England have all looked for it to no avail, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. He may have been baptised in a different parish near Stoke St. Gregory and not SSG itself. I would love to hear from anyone who is in Edward's line and who might have information on his HOUSE grandparents. I also have some info on his maternal line, the SHEARNs. Incidentally, Charles SHEARN is also in the Handbook of Texas Online. Does anyone know the ancestry of Edward Mandell House, the advisor to Woodrow Wilson, and one of the most influential men of the 20th Century? I have searched the web and not found that any of the HOUSE lines claims him. He said that his family was supposed to have been from Holland, but we all know that family anecdote can be pretty undependable. I'm just curious, and would appreciate a link to some information, if anyone can assist. Jim Patrick
Hi Kathy, A branch of my family of HOUSE married into the TUCKER family, but I don't recognize any of your Houses. Mine goes like this: "Col." Edward Mandell HOUSE (President Woodrow Wilson's political advisor) was born in Houston, TX on 26 Jul. 1858. He married Loulie HUNTER and they had two daughters: Mona HOUSE (b. 1882) and Janet HOUSE (b. 1887). Mona married Randolph F. TUCKER and they lived in Wendham, MA. Janet married Gordon AUCHINCLOSS and they lived in Long Island, NY. Gordon Auchincloss was a relative of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's stepfather, Hugh Auchincloss. I would like to fill in some blanks where these lines are concerned. Do you think your Tucker could be related? Were yours in the Boston area at all? I don't know anything about these Tuckers. I guess it's just coincidence that your line is also HOUSE and TUCKER. Col. Edward House was a brother of my g-grandmother Mary Elizabeth HOUSE. If anyone knows about these families, I'd love to hear from you.
