Am looking for Peter House who married Catherine Barnhart, the daughter of George Barnhart, UEL. His son, John House, took the name John Vanhouse or Van House in later years. He also may have been known as George Peter House. I have solid data on the land grant to his wife, Catherine (as UEL grant) and the sale of that land. Also for the baptism of their son, John. Peter was known as Peter House (not George Peter) in those documents. 1781 Quebec - There was a Peter House, also spelled Howse, tried for mutiny and found not guilty. He was with the King’s RRNY (same as George Barnhart). Great Britain, British Library, Additional Manuscripts, No. 21, 743, Quebec Orderly Book, folio 79 and folios 80-81. 1806 land grant in Mountain Twp, County Stormont, Ontario, Canada, to Catherine House, wife of Peter House (yeoman, of Cornwall). This was a UEL land grant to Catherine as daughter of UEL George Barnhart. 1807 subsequent sale of the land at Mountain, County Stormont, Ontario 1807 - John HOUSE Baptized Trinity Anglican Church, Cornwall, County Stormont, Ontario Province, Canada 29 November 1807, the son of Peter House & Catherine Barnhart; godfathers : John Barnhart & William Runnions; godmother: Olive Stillwell. Reference: Mircor Film C 3028 Peter House and Catherine Barnhart had at least 3 sons, John, Abraham, and Peter, Junior. From data 14 Jun 1990 by a cousin: The following was found in death certificates at the city hall of Russell, NY: “George Peter Van House; born Louisville, father’s name was George Peter Van House; died Jan 22, 1902, age 81; mother Catherine.” 14 Jun 1990 by same cousin, regarding Peter Junior. “The following data was obtained from an Index of Deeds dated 1802 at the County of St. Lawrence, N.Y. This was the oldest record of deeds available. Much of the data in this file was illegible. Location of properties was by reference to landmarks or to other properties. Peter Van House purchased land in Russell, N.Y. from George Ellison of Utica, N.Y. and his wife Jane for $2,200.10. The date was Oct. 20, 1875. 84 acres were involved. Peter Van House. On 27 April 1878 sold to Henry W. Van House 50+ acres for $50.00.”
Am researching the name Abraham Van House (also House), of St. Lawrence County, NY. He was one of the sons of Peter and Catherine House (Van House). Catherine was the daughter of George Barnhart, a Loyalist. Abraham's brother, John (Van) House, was christened at Trinity Anglican Church, Cornwall, County Stormont, Ontario Province, Canada 29 November 1807, the son of Peter House & Catherine Barnhart; godfathers : John Barnhart & William Runnions; godmother: Olive Stillwell. Hi Marianne, Do you know where in Missouri your Margaret House lived? My grandfather was born in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, in 1880 or 1881. I know who his parents were and they are from New England. I believe that some of this family ended up in New York. I've always wondered what my great-grandparents were doing in Missouri and have felt that perhaps they were visiting relatives. 1. This problem of multiple messages has occured in the past and is not the sender's fault. I have been a subscriber to several rootsweb lists for several years and have found it to occur just after major upgrades by rootsweb, and if you noted rootsweb upgraded again last week so please do not blame the sender or the list for this incident, as it is just another computer glitch. 2. Lisa, my 2nd Great Grandmother was a House. Margaret House born New York, 1819, married Henry A. Purdy in 1841 in Ohio. They traveled by way of Michigan to Missouri and died in Missouri. Their children migrated out of Missouri to Texas, Indian Territory, Oklahoma and Kansas. I am very interested in your connection to Dennison, Texas as my Richard C. Purdy, son of Margaret House, left Missouri and went to Grayson County, Texas about 1880. I have never been able to connect Margaret House to her House line and am very interested in the House family that you have in Dennison. This sounds as though there may be a connection for me. If you have further info on your House line in the Dennison area, I am very interested. Please contact me and do not be discouraged by remarks similar to those on this list, as the folks who make them are generally new and inexperienced and do not realize what kind of foul-ups can occur on a computer controlled and regulated list such as we have at rootsweb.
