my father's parents were Raymond Howard (?) HoughtEn & Angnes Elizabeth Tarnowsky. Grampa's branch is from the John Gyles HoughtEn, I believe. we were the branch that changed the ON to EN in the last name. the story I heard for the name change was that 2 brothers parted ways & 1 changed the spelling of the last name. I don't know if that is fact or just a story handed down. our branch is from Pocklington, England.
