I was given the marriage of a William Hoghton to Grace Banks in 1453 in Lancashire from an ancestrial file at the LDS. The reason this marriage is of interest to me is that my great-great grandfather's name was Banks Houghton/Haughton. Since he had this fairly unusual first name, I have often wondered if it was the maiden name of a Houghton wife. as in the case of William and Grace. There are some Banks Houghtons in the IGI and some were from St. Helens, Lancashire. I'm not back in time very far as many of you, and I have not made a connection to any of them yet, but I imagine there is a connection with this first name of Banks to the ones in the IGI. My gggrandfather, Banks Houghton/Haughton was born in Chadderton, Lanc abt. 1832. He has a younger brother, William Henry Houghton, born in 1849 as well as 2 sisters. Banks and his brother were coal miners and went to Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania in 1869. Their mother, Ruth Houghton/Haughton, was not married when she had the 4 children. Her parents' names were William and Betty (parents Luke and Betty Hopwood) Houghton. Ruth was christened Jan. 20, 1811in Royton, Lanc. Is there any possibility that my Banks Houghton is a descendent of William and Grace (Banks) Houghton? I have been able to connect Banks to his mother Ruth, and Ruth to her father, William, but I'm having trouble in finding who William's parents might be in the church records. Have any of you come across a Banks Houghton/Haughton in your research or any William Houghtons that might connect? Usually I find the name spelled HOughton. Thank you for any suggestions too.
