Shelley I searched the Houghton database but do not find an immediate match. If you would be willing to scan the photo, I can place it in the unknown photo section. -- Charlie Charles J. Vella, Ph.D. charlesvella@comcast.net I am writing an updated revision of the 1912 Houghton Genealogy. The Houghton Surname Project website now includes 80,000 descendants of Ralph and John Houghton of Lancaster, MA and John Houghton of Stony Brook, NJ, and all Houghton/Haughton surname individuals prior to 1930 who lived in or emigrated to the United States. Variants include Haughton, Hotton, Hotten, Hoten, Hoton, Howton, etc. I am also coordinating the Houghton/Haughton DNA Project. Please consider contributing your Houghton/Haughton descendancy data to the project. You will be cited as the contributor of any new data. Dear Jane, Unless your John Houghton is from Brooklyn (Kings County) NY we are unlikely to be related. Dear Dawn, Sorry Dawn but I don't open attachments. Unless your ancestors are related to a John Houghton who lived in Brooklyn (Kings County) NY we are unlikely to be related. Oh and I forgot to say we the Daresbury Houghtons pronounce the name "Horton" ("Howton" tends to come from the south of England where there are another lot of Houghtons) ----- Original Message ----- From: <Patsan2721@aol.com> To: <houghton@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 25, 2010 7:19 PM Subject: Re: [HOUGHTON] Houghtons of Daresbury Cheshire > > Jane - thanks for your response. Practically 65 miles due S . The Church was where Charles Dodson ( Lewis Carroll of Alice in Wonderland fame) was christened and his father was rector there. One of my Houghton rellies married Charles' nurse. The nearest towns are Warrington to the NE and Runcorn to NW. Google it and you should find it. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Patsan2721@aol.com> To: <houghton@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 25, 2010 7:19 PM Subject: Re: [HOUGHTON] Houghtons of Daresbury Cheshire > > Jane - thanks for your response. There have been Houghtons in N Cheshire (Northwich,Great Budworth, Daresbury etc) since at least the 1500s to my knowledge and probably centuries before and Ralph appears amongst the family names the earliest Ralph with definite links to me is a Ralph b 1710/11. John is also a very common name in our family (but there again it is a common name) I have a John b around the beginning of the 1600s in Daresbury (other names at that time are Elizabeth, Peter, Hugo, Thomas and William). John, William and Thomas have come all they way down the generations and my father was John and his brothers William and Thomas and a cousin of mine were Thomas. I think there were other Houghtons from Prescot Lancs and I am sure there are more as well besides. My family appear to have been Yeomen. Hope that helps Jane Houghton ----- Original Message ----- From: <Patsan2721@aol.com> To: <houghton@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 25, 2010 5:38 PM Subject: Re: [HOUGHTON] Houghtons of Daresbury Cheshire > > Hi - hope you can maybe give us some info. Thanks for the location info, Jane. Sandy Bernardi
Interested to share info with anyone linked to the Houghtons of Daresbury Cheshire going back to 1600
Jane - thanks for your response. Sounds like way too many Ralphs and Johns to ever figure anything out for certain. Where is Daresbury in relation to Lancaster (I need a UK map)? Sandy Bernardi
Thanks for your input. Too many Johns, too little concrete info!!
Hi - hope you can maybe give us some info. According to the Houghton DNA Database we are related to John Houghton born 4-28-1665, settled. near Princeton, New Jersey. Our family "records" indicate that our John Houghton was the son of Ralph & Jane Houghton who came from Lancaster, England to Massachusetts around 1654, but the Database seems to show that Ralph of Lancaster, MA and John of New jersey are genetically separate, so we don't know which way to look at all of this. Is Ralph from anywhere near Daresbury? Thanks for contacting us. S. Bernardi
Hi, My John Houghton came from England born about 1624. He came to US and spent most of his time in Lancaster, Worcester, MA where he died in April 1684. He was married to Beatrix no maiden name. In my records I show 4 John Houghtons, 3 besides this one. It is a lot of work figuring out exactly which one is the correct one and all the records out there are not correct. Good luck. Charlie Vella has been researching ALL Houghtons for years so perhaps his site could help you. Phyllis, Your relatives are not in my family tree. Sorry! Most of mine are spelled Haughton, and I know that is not a prerequisite, but in the 1800's my ancestors are not the same as yours, nor is the location. R. Martty
I just found this information. My father was John Houghton Howarth born 2/28/1913 in Alexandria Bay, Jefferson Co., NY His mother was Luella Mae Houghton, born July 4, 1883 in Alexandria, Jefferson Co., NY Her father was Albert D. Houghton born Aug. 8, 1862 in Alexandria, Jefferson Co., NY I am interested in finding out information about a pharmacy that my two great grandfathers owned in Upstate NY, presumably in Alexandria, NY. Their two last names were Houghton and Howarth. Thanks so much. Phyllis Howarth Muscolino
