    1. William Henry Houghton
    2. Clive Napier
    3. Hi from Perth Western Australia. I am trying to trace the family of my Great Grandmother. She was Emma Louise Houghton born at Princes Place Tranmere Birkenhead UK on 28/5/1846 (copy of B/Cert). Her father was shown as William Henry Houghton a Naval Engineer and her mother as Ann Brooks. I saw a William Henry Houghton who died in 4th quarter 1850 at Prescott which is close to Birkenhead but as this was in the St Caths I know no more. Emma L married my Great Grandfather James Stephen Nicholson who became a Lt. Col. in the British Army in India. They had two children Edmund James Houghton Nicholson who became my Grandfather and whom I knew well and Mabel Grace who married a Col. Francis Cunnyhamme - Hughes also of the Army in India . I would be very interested in any information re either the Houghton's from Birkenhead or the family of Mabel and Francis Cunnyhamme- Hughes. Clive Napier cnap@optusnet.com.au

    1. Reuben R. Houghton Connection
    2. Herman Kleine
    3. Greetings, I am new to this list and an researching to find the ancestors of my wife's ggggrandfather Reuben R. Houghton. It has been suggested that he was a descendant of Joab Houghton of New Jersey and Kentucky. We know that he was born in KY ca 1834 and his wife Arnetta Unk last name was born in Indiana. They had two sons Clarence and Everett born in 1859 and 1861 respectively. He was a photographer and sometime confectioner. The family moved around a lot. At the time of the 1870 census they lived in Ohio Co. IN and in 1882 lived in Clermont Co. OH. We have been unable to find them in the 1880 or 1900 census in OH, KY, IN. He died and is buried in Clermont Co., OH in 1904. For him to be descended from the New Jersey Joab we expect there is a least one generation between. We have found a Reuben Houghton listed in 1850 census in Fayette Co., KY that may be him but birth years don't match. However we do know date errors in census information is frequent. Any help would be appreciated. We are willing to share the information we have. Thanks, Herman Kleine

    3. Christmas Greetings and all the Best for 2000 rom a VERY new member. My interest in the Family stems from research which shows my Great Grandmother on my Mothers side to have been a Miss Emma Louisa Houghton. I have traced the family back to Tranmere , a suburb of Birkenhead, which in turn is on the other side of the Mersey to Liverpool . We even have the address of Princes PLace for place of birth. In the copy of the Birth Cerificate her father is given as William Henry Houghton Naval Engineer. Emma was born on 29th May 1846. Emma's mother's name is given as Ann and her maiden name was Brooks. I have no marriage record. Emma married my Great Grandfather ,James Stephen Nicholson,in 1867. He was an Officer in the British Army in India and retired around the end of the 19th Cent as a Lt. Colonel. We have excellent details of his family who came from Berwick on Tweed in the north of England. They had two children. The first was my grandfather whom I knew well as I was in my 20's when he died in 1956. He lived his last years with us but as with most people we did not get from him all the infomation we could have. All my details of Emma Louisa Houghton(Nicholson) are available to who ever wants them and I would appreciate any information about the family which may apply to her branch. Best wishes Clive Napier e-mail cnap@optusnet.com.au

    2. Hello, Just wanted to let people know that I have updated my RICHARDSON (ENG>MA>ME>WA>OR) data file, and uploaded it to my zip page, in case any one else is researching RICHARDSON, ADAMS, HOUGHTON, DEARBORN, McQUILLAN, etc... This file is made using Wordpad, and condensed into a zip file, and uploaded to the net at my page: <A HREF="http://members.aol.com/semopar/zippage.html">Zippage</A> The file is growing very large, and includes info I transcribed personally (censuses, etc), plus a mishmash data found on the web/and in books pertaining mostly to the surname RICHARDSON in ME, MA, OR, or WA states.... but it does list other surnames (by marriages, etc) a very few of which I will list below.... Again, the major surname is RICHARDSON, but does contain some data compiled on my other intermarried branches of DEARBORN, ADAMS, HOUGHTON, FRENCH, McQUILLAN, WYMAN, and most data is from ME or MA. Thank you for your time. Pat ps... if you do download the file, dont forget to use your "search" option, as it is much quicker. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> only a few of the other surnames (may be only one occurrence, or dozens): Blemehard?, GLEASON, TOZIER, ADAMS, STEVENS, Namblre?, PATTEE, HAMLEY, WILSON, McQUILLIN, GERALD, MATHEWS, ROBINSON, ROUNDEY, PERLEY, MORRISON, STINSON, FLAGG, WOOD, COBURN, SPENSER?, French, Waters, Wyman, JOHNSON, ELWELL, LEWIS, THOMPSON, HIGGINS, STARBIRD, LOVEJOY, PAGE, GRANT, LEAVITH, HEWEY , SALSBURY, WILLARD, ELLIS , KILBRETH, BALCOM, GIFFORD, Hall, Silverside, Duxford, Cressal, Reed, Kendall, Cornwall, Houghton, Sacherall, Thake, Dearborn, Swan, Davis,

    3. Hello all, I am interested in sharing notes with anyone doing research on the following families: William HOUGHTON (born 1790 in NC, died 1814 in Greene Co.GA) son of Joshua HOUGHTON Sr. (1744-1819) and Julia Fowler. [Joshua Sr. apparently had 7 sons and 2 daughters, all of which accompanied him to Greene County GA from Chowan Co. NC.] William married Elizabeth CRUTCHFIELD (died 1828 in Greene, GA). She was the daughter of John CRUTCHFIELD and Mary BARRETT. [by the way, Elizabeth's sister Doratha CRUTCHFIELD married William's brother Joshua HOUGHTON Jr. (1771-1841)] William and Elizabeth had the following children: William H. b. 1809 m. Eliza Ann BENNETT Elizabeth Crutchfield m. in 1922 Right ROGERS Lucy Ann (1810-1856) m. first John GONEKIN second (in 1849) Rev. P.P. 3. Hello, I am searching for information on the family of Louisa M. Crutchfield HOUGHTON, born ca. 1800, probably in Greene Co. or Clarke Co., Georgia and died 1889. She had a sister Harriet Crutchfield HOUGHTON and a brother Robert B. HOUGHTON. The brother lived at some time in his life in Jefferson Co. Florida, and we think it was during a visit to her brother that Louisa met and later married, in 1834, John David EDWARDS of Jefferson Co., Florida. The marriage license was from Athens (Clarke Co.), Georgia. Louisa HOUGHTON and David EDWARDS had a daughter Mary Elizabeth EDWARDS, who later married Iredell BRYAN of Thomasville, Georgia. Mary Edwards BRYAN (1842-1913) was a well-known southern writer in her time. She was my ggg-grandmother. This little bit of information is all I have on Louisa and the HOUGHTON family. We believe that she was from a family of Hougtons in Greene Co., Georgia, as the Houghtons and the Crutchfields were prominent families there. Both Louisa and her sister Harriet had Crutchfield as a middle name. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated, as this has been a brick wall for us for a long time. Thanks, Dorothy Callaway

    3. Dear Joe... Thank you for your communication and for listing your website. I checked it out & found some people who may be connected to my HOUGHTON line. I haven't connected to England as yet ... my great grandfather, Clarence HOUGHTON, b. Indiana in 1859, lived & died in Ohio, here in the US; his father, Rueben HOUGHTON, was born in Kentucky, d. Ohio 1904, was a photographer up & down the Ohio River in the late 1800's ... and it's possible that Rueben's father was also Rueben b. in Kentucky, and a grandfather, John HOUGHTON (married a Rachel RANDOLPH), was born in New Jersey ... that would take it back quite far ... probably late 1700's ... and I've no idea when they came over here from England. I'm speculating but I think this is how my particular HOUGHTON line goes. On your English HOUGHTON's, how far back do you go? or is one reasonably able to go? Thanks again for your response.. Sincerely, Nancy Lange Auburn, California, USA

    3. Nancy, Charlie et al I originally set this list up when I found the new FamilySearch site a few months back - glad it is proving popular. You all may want to check out one of the pages on my site where there is more Houghton information I've collected over the years ... Its' at www.zen.co.uk/home/page/joe.houghton/HOUGHTON.HTM Anyone have Houghton's from Lincolnshire, UK? Regards Joe Houghton Joes Genealogy - www.zen.co.uk/home/page/joe.houghton/DEFAULT.HTM Your first stop for Genealogy links and beginners tips to using the Internet for family history! Researching TREW, LOCKING, JANNEY, HOUGHTON Writing from Bolton, Lancashire, UK -----Original Message----- From: Nancy Lange [mailto:nlange@foothill.net] Sent: 30 April 1999 22:58 To: HOUGHTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: New Subscriber Info Dear Charlie... I just discovered the HOUGHTON list ... I've subscribed to numerous other lists, mostly areas in England, Australia, etc. looking for my other family roots ... and then the other evening I discovered that there are some individual names with their own lists, so subscribed to a few of those as well... that's terrific!! I've looked at and listed stuff on the GenForum HOUGHTON list, but I think this is much better!! But, I found a cousin on that list, so I think it's a wonderful one as well!! About my HOUGHTON line: My ggrandfather, Clarence HOUGHTON, b. Indiana, 1859, d. 1904, Clermont Co., Ohio. Married Laura Belle SELLS, b. 1859, Clermont Co., Ohio. They had several children ... if your want their info, I can give it to you. I'm not sure if you want ancestors or descendants or both, so I'll start with ancestors ... it's shorter. I'm currently researching Clarence's father, Ru(e)ben R. HOUGHTON ... b. Kentucky, unk. when or where ... I've ordered the 1850 Census for Fayette Co., KY as I found a Reuben listed in the index for same. He apparently was a photographer who travelled up & down the Ohio River, and at some point, settled down (?) in Indiana, where Clarence & his brother, Everett (there may have been other siblings) were born. Frankly, I'm not sure that my HOUGHTON's are related to all those other HOUGHTON's. So, until I find a link, I'll just keep rummaging through Census and other stuff ... unless you know of a link to this group? In the 1850 Jefferson Co., Louisville Dist 3 Census, I did find the following: Thomas HOUGHTON, Machinist, age 57, b. England wife: Prudence, age 50, b. Maine son: George A., age 27, Machinist, b. Indiana dtr: Caroline M., age 24, b. Ohio dtr: Mary J., Age 17, b. Ohio This family looks awfully good to be Rueben's parents/siblings ... particularly, the travelling part as reflected in the varying birthplaces. I've ordered the 1840 Census for Lawrence Co., Ohio & the 1830 Census for Hamilon Co., Ohio ... where I found Thomas on earlier indexes. If you want to be kept updated and/or wish the descendants of Clarence on down to .... my grandchildren? if you wish, let me know. Sincerely, Nancy Lange Auburn, CA
