Michaele, I have not been able to verify this information (I descended from John & Beatrix Josslyn/Walker and still have not found a second form of proof to which Beatrix's last name is confirmed.) Anyway,... do what you will with this information but please, if you pass it on, point out that there are no references (it all has to be backed up.) It is not known if they married or if he lived with her nor is it known if Asmull is her given or surname. John Houghton & Asmull had one known daughter: Catherine Houghton who married or “was of service” to Sir Thomas Houghton of Houghton Tower. [See folder for more information on a brief description of The Houghton Tower.] Sir Thomas Houghton & Catherine Houghton had 5 known children: Christiana m. Thomas Woolfall (? hard to read, very small print) could be Wooltail? Anna m. Simon Blakely of Blakely Jane m. John Ben Catherine m. John Whiteside *John Houghton (b.1631?) ch. Dec 24, 1624, England d. Apr 29, 1684, in Lancaster MA m. Beatrix (Walker/ Josslyn) d. Jan 8 1711/12 John & Beatrix had 7 known children < You can find this and a large portion of their descendants at Charles Vella's website,... Charles did the research of Dr. John Wesley Houghton's book "The Houghton Genealogy" and found the mistakes in the original work,... He has put the corrections up on the web. The area that I have researched is from myself to my 6th g-grandparents, Ebenezer Houghton (son of Capt. Cyrus Houghton) and Hadassah Houghton (dau. of Simeon Houghton); yes,.. Eb & Hadassah were cousins. They settled in New York state and had lived in Vermont & Massachusetts. I still have a long way to go. I'm wondering where your first Houghton grandparent is (and if you are from New York / Catskill Mountain area) - My lineage from my mother to John & Beatrix is as follows: Kathryn Miller < Irene Cook < Minnie Anne Houghton & Adlebert F. Cook < George Edward Houghton & Mary Johanna Dunham < Edward Houghton & Catherine Burnside < Jonas M. Houghton & Hannah Cass < Ebenezer Houghton & Hadassah Houghton < Capt. Cyrus Houghton < Ebenezer Houghton & Mary Priest < Robert Houghton & Esther Leppingwell < John Houghton & Beatrix Hadassah Houghton (who married Eb, above) was dau. of Simeon Houghton & Jerusha Taylor < Daniel Houghton & Lydia < Jonas Houghton & Mary Burbeen < John & Beatrix. And, I think (can't remember and too lazy to look it up), Mary Priest who m. Ebenezer Houghton was the daughter of a Houghton mother. But then, it doesn't matter because that too was from a Priest genealogy (published) - I really don't like regurgitated material - eventually I need to find proof for myself that the information is correct (it will keep me busy for the next 30 years, if I live that long.) If you don't have Dr.Vella's site address, I will forward it. He would probably like to hear from you. He is very helpful and a nice man. Also,.. just to let you know, Gary's research conflicts with Charles Vella's research. Please be careful, don't assume anything is right or mislead anyone into thinking it is. As for the genealogy of Herverus, Gary could be of more help to you, I have not made it half the distance in research! I get caught up in too many details and helping other people,... it slows me down but I still enjoy it. Funds are usually the other barrier. Anyway, Gary is very nice too but I wish I had a tape recorder for the times I've spoken to him,... he knows his stuff and rattles things off so fast that I would need to learn shorthand to keep up. He is an archivist and lecturer. Last I spoke to him he was researching Egyptian history. ,... Rebecca Stacknow, York, PA, USA.
Does anyone know about these: I am descended fom Sarah Houghton b July 1672 in Lancaster MA and married Daniel Goble I think her father was John Houghton III, b 1624 in Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire He married Beatrix Jocelyn Walker in 1647 in Elland, Yorkshire I don't know when they came to the US The family apparently originally came from Howton Tower in Lancashire I have a Thomas Houghton who was born there about 1433 None of this has been verified, so if anyone has any info, I would love to hear from you Michaele > > HOUGHTON-L@rootswebcom > > > Hello everyone who replied to my posting It is nice to know that you are > there If the listowner does not mind, I wonder if we all did a posting > about our HOUGHTON's and see if anyone can connect > > We would all have gathered information that we have found does not connect > to our own family trees, so by posting them, and our brickwalls, we may be > able to make some of them come tumbling down What do you think? > > What say you? > Annette in Dubbo NSW >
Well Annette, I'll take you up on your suggestion since I have been lurking until now. My interest is in Houghton/Haughton/Horton/Horten/Hawten and any other variation anyone can come up with. All variations appear in my family history and I have no idea which one is correct. My gggrandmother was Caroline Haughton, born in Mawgan in Pydar, Cornwall, UK in 1823 to Thomas Haughton and Jane (nee Chivell). She married Joseph Ford in 1845 and they emigrated to South Australia in 1847. Caroline died in 1892. I have managed to trace back a further 2 generations in Mawgan in Pydar, and beyond that the family moved from somewhere else, probably Cornwall. Caroline's sisters Anne, Maria and Mary also came to South Australia, and so did her nephew Nicholas. I am interested in tracing back further, as well as finding out what happened to the remaining family in Mawgan in Pydar, and finding any living descendants from Caroline's brother and sisters. If anyone has any data on the Houghton/Haughton/etc families from Cornwall, I would really love to hear from you. I will gratefully accept data from text, gedcom, excel, etc files or just an email. Hello everyone who replied to my posting. It is nice to know that you are there. If the listowner does not mind, I wonder if we all did a posting about our HOUGHTON's and see if anyone can connect. We would all have gathered information that we have found does not connect to our own family trees, so by posting them, and our brickwalls, we may be able to make some of them come tumbling down. What do you think? I have two major brickwalls one in Scotland and my HOUGHTON connection. I recently wrote to everyone with the name HOUGHTON in Lutterworth, Leicestershire and have received a few answers. None of them seem to be the same line, but I could post them to the list and see if anyone else can identify them as their own. It was a costly exercise by the time I added an addressed envelope, an IRC and postage from Australia but as I was desperate it was worth it (about $30 Australian). What say you? Annette in Dubbo NSW

I joined the list in August 2000 hoping that something about my Houghton's may be posted. On re-reading the "welcome letter" I see that it refers to revising JW Houghton's 1912 Houghton Genealogy, in particular the American connections. Does this also include the English Houghton families? There does not appear to be much chat going on from the list and I can't say that there are many replies to any queries posted. Are there many subscribers? My Houghton's hail from Lutterworth, Leicestershire and left there for Australia in 1839 and included Robert Snr. and wife Elizabeth, son Robert and wife Mary Ann nee DILKS and 14 year old son James. Also on board was another daughter and her husband, leaving one son at home as far as I can work out. I have lots of info about the voyage and then afterwards but am having trouble with the English end. Any help would be appreciated. Annette in Dubbo NSW

I married into the Houghton family on June 23rd, 1984 when I married Sherrilyn Houghton. I have collected family tree information on both of our families for about ten years but only recently have started getting it organized. As I was going through part of my family tree, descendants of George Down and Celia Weeks, I came across Arno Oliver Houghton (Mar 14, 1890 - Feb 29, 1952). I had to look to see if there was a relation between Arno and my wife and sure enough, Arno is my wife's Great Uncle. The branch of the Houghton that I am researching are descendants of William Houghton (born Aug 28, 1834 in Lancashire, England) and Sarah Jane Edmondson (born May 24, 1842). They lived at St. Mary's, Petrolia, Houghton Center in Ontario, Canada. I would like to know if there are any cousins out there. Regards, Dale Harman daleharman@sympatico.ca
Re: My Great Grandmother. Melissa Houghton was born in (unk) Town in (maybe) Orange County, Vermont Feb.19,1832. She is buried in Sonora Township, Hancock County, Illinois, tombstone date of death is Jan. 16,1907. She lived in Sonora with her husband Christian HAMMA from the early 1850's till her death. Thirteen children were born to them, only one died before becoming an adult. I have information about her and her children in Illinois, but need to learn who her parents were and why she was living with Andrew TIMMONS Family in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois in the 1850 Census. Listed with her are George W. HOUGHTON age 13 yrs, David HOUGHTON age 10 yrs, and Sarah HOUGHTON age 6 all born in Vermont except for Sarah who was born in Illinois. By the 1860 Census Melissa and Christian were married and had several children. So far I haven't found the younger ones in a later Census. The TIMMONS Family were living in Montrose, Lee, Iowa by 1860. (This is just across the Mississippi River from Nauvoo) Anyone who can help me with this please let me know as this is becoming my "brick wall". I have written to Montpelier, Vt for her birth record--None Found; I wrote to a couple of town clerks with the same result. I must admit that I couldn't even get a death record from Illinois. Thank goodness for Census records and tombstones. Nancy Nichols nicgen@home.com

I am a new subscriber researching the name OUGHTON which is often connected with HOUGHTON. While browsing the 1997 archives I found an email from Barry Woods who I believe to have at least two of my OUGHTONS in his tree. Sadly, the email address given is no longer live and my message was returned undelivered. If Barry is out there still, could he get in contact with me so we can share information. This is my partner's father's family, and we are very keen to find out where he came from as we have had to start with next to no information about them. I have George OUGHTON b Canterbury (1851 census) or Brighton (1881 census) in 1809, married to Mary Ann, b Bircham Tofts 1812. Their son George William was born around 1854 in Docking. I need to know whether George came from Sussex or Kent, and Barry's information seemed to suggest a James OUGHTON as his father, who married a girl from Sussex called Lucy. Please get in touch if you recognise any of the above. Jan
I found some old records of mine that I had received that I completely forgot about... here is what I have. Various records have the spelling of the surname, alternatively, as HAUGHTON or HOUGHTON. This is in response to an email I received asking me where my Martha and her family were originally from. I would say myself that it could be anywhere: PA, VA, NC or SC. But beyond that, going back into the past, I have no idea. For those of my own line, I know that John HOUGHTON started out in PA, and Martha moved to VA when she married, and then her family moved to NC. She then moved her family, after her husband died, from NC to SC. Later my line of the HOLLINGSWORTHs moved to Pickens County, Alabama, NOT Georgia, although it could be said that during that time period that part of Alabama belonged to the Georgia territory and later to the Carolina territory or vice versa. Maps are useful here to read historical documents because boundaries, especially county, as well as state, boundaries, changed so much. >From the Hollingsworth Register, Vol.2, No. 2. June 1966 pages 43-46... I will only write the pertinent parts here, including the sources that the author and publisher, Henry Hollingsworth, included in this publication. "Joseph3 - Born March 11 (May 11 is correct Quaker date - Ed.) 1709. Married in 1730, Martha HAUGHTON. Removed to Virginia......" "...Joseph HOLLINGSWORTH went South very early. He sojourned in Virginia, but went to North Carolina before 1753 (when he received a grant of land from Governor Matthew Rowen) and died in Anson County before 1757. The records which establish these items as facts are: (1) The Certificate of Removal dated 3mo. 2, 1741, for Joseph and Martha HOLLINGSWORTH, from Pennsylvania to Hopewell Monthly Meeting of Quakers in Virginia, (2) Deed Book "M" p. 304, Union District, South Carolina, reciting the Grant of 4. Sept. 1753; (3) Estate Administration Papers, 1757, Joseph HOLLINGSWORTH, deceased, Anson County, North Carolina...." "...The Bush River Minutes [also] show that 'Isaac HOLLINGSWORTH, son of Joseph & Martha, Craven County, South Carolina, married, 8mo. 11, 1774, Ann COX...." "...Joseph3 HOLLINGSWORTH, ninth child of Thomas2 by Grace (COOK)HOLLINGSWORTH, born May 11, 1709, Pennsylvania; died about 1757, Anson County, North Carolina, aged about 48 years. Married, April 23, 1730, MARTHA HOUGHTON, (daughter of John HOUGHTON, New Castle County, Delaware, whose Will, dated March 10, proved May 27, 1720 Book C p. 221, names wife Ann, daughters Martha, Mary, Rebecca, Dina DIXON, Ann DIXON, and sons Henry, William, John and Thomas; son-(in-law) George DIXON.) She probably born about 1710; last known (?) to be alive when she took a certificate dated May 26, 1770, from New Garden Meeting, North Carolina, to Fredericksburgh (alias Wateree) Meeting, Craven Co., South Carolina. They took certificates first from Kennett Meeting, Penna., dated 3mo. (May) 2, 1741, to Hopewell Meeting, Frederick County, VA." >From the Hollingsworth Register, Vol. 3, No. 4, December 1967, page 149. "8. Jacob4 HOLLINGSWORTH, born probably about 1744, Virginia, died 1816, Union District, South Carolina, aged about 72. Married, before 1770, BETTY TRAMMELL..........Betty HOLLINGSWORTH died before Jacob died. Jacob moved into old Craven County, S.C., about 1772, at which time he obtained a land grant." Back to Cheryl now.. It appears to me that Martha (HOUGHTON) HOLLINGSWORTH moved to Craven County, South Carolina, after her husband, Joseph, died. And her family soon followed, including my own ancestor and his family: Jacob4 HOLLINGSWORTH moved to the same vicinity or at least the same county as his mother after his own wife (Betty) died. At this time, however, I have enough sources to research the descendance of this line.. however, I am searching for the ascendancy: who were her parents, and her grandparents, etc. Here is the line, in short that is included here: John HOUGHTON, and wife Ann (last name and parents unknown) Children: Martha, who married Joseph HOLLINGSWORTH, whose children were Jacob (later Jacob Sr.), Thomas, Joseph Jr., William, Abraham, Isaac, Martha, and Enoch. Mary Rebecca Dina, who married a Dixon, George's brother or cousin Ann, who married George Dixon. Henry William John Thomas I believe that more information on the DIXONs and their roots and descendants can be found in the American Quaker Genealogy. There were also a couple of HOLLINGSWORTHs who married directly into the DIXON lines as well. I hope this helps someone and sorry for the long-windedness, but sometimes, you just cannot cut out the "good stuff." :) Later on, I will write to tell you more about Martha's siblings and their families, as time permits. I am pretty sure that more information is included in the Quaker meeting minutes in the American Quaker Genealogy series of reference books. For anyone wanting to, you can see for yourself, probably in the genealogy department of your library. Thanks! Cheryl -----Original Message----- From: Terry G. Hello, My name is Tony Arnold and I just joined the list. I have hit somewhat of a dead end in my research. My g-grandfather was Joseph Lee HOUGHTON, b. 7 Jun 1897 in Stewart County, GA. His parents were Joseph Franklin HOUGHTON (b. 8 Jan 1862, d. 24 Nov 1935) and Lizzie MCMICKLE (b. 8 Oct 1868, d. 17 Jan 1910). Both of J.Lee's parents were also born in Stewart County, GA. I cannot find any more information on Joseph Franklin HOUGHTON, his parents or if there were any siblings. If any part of this sounds familiar, I would appreciate hearing back. Thanks for reading, Tony _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
