    1. Wilson Co., KS Houghtons
    2. Carl Long
    3. List, I am looking for a Jerry Houghton who in 1998 had a query on the any link to Houghton on Wilson Co. (KS) web page. I believe my husband and he are from the same Houghton line out of Wilson Co. KS. We have a picture from one of my husband's Aunts and hand written on it is Grandma Long's people. Grandma Long would be Susan Martha Houghton daughter of George F. Houghton and Mary Jane Barber Houghton. The picture is of a 2 maybe 3 story house (hard to tell through the tree branchs) on the porch are 3 adult males (one an older man with white hair and bread), 5 adult females (one an older lady sitting by the older man, and 5 children 2 are infants. It is a long shot but thought he might know who all the people were in the picture. As far as we have been able to find there was only one line of Houghtons in Wilson Co. Thanks in advance for you time and trouble. Margaret Long

    3. Hello...I have just finished a book about Pioneers of Medina Co. Ohio with all surnames beginning with "H" from mid 1800's to early 1900's and would be glad to do a free look up to see if your family is mentioned in this book. I have created a format that I believe will help anyone searching for their family..I have combined: Newspaper articles, marriages, deaths, mini bio's, court records, cemetery records and more....all with the surname in Bold print for easy searching. I was tired of buying a lot of books that had so much that didn't help me and thought if I'm tired of wasting money so will others. While I am bound by certain rules by my publisher I can do free look ups and if your family is mentioned I can let you know the print date and the cost of the book. (As well I am already working on "M" surnames and will go to A-Z before I'm done). Thank you for your time and let me know if I can be of help. 3. Have some correspondence from Lloyd Speedy in New Zealand from 1986. Names are Alfred John HOUGHTON arrived in Auckland the sailing ship Antiope c 1880 and settled at Waiuku. Children Tristram Alfred, Alfred S Houghton, and Marion Ellen Houghton b 1861 it has Devonshire after this name, so presume that she was born there. Marion married JHH Speedy . Mr Speedy also sent me a copy of the Lincoln Inn Heralds Office, Great Turnstile Lincoln's Inn Fields =Houghton= of Yorkshire (from Lancaster) and appears to be a Houghton Tree. I won't go into it online, but if anyone would care for a copy, I could try to scan it and send as an attachment or photocopy and post. Let me know. I have a couple more letters that I will put to the list in the future. They are replies that I have had and that are not mine. How about if everyone does the same? I am sure we all have letters and references that are not ours. If everyone posted one or two at a time so as not to bog the list if interested then the sender could be contacted for the name and address of the person who wrote the letter. What do you think? 2. Annette Pringle
    3. Hi all, Thanks, Annette, you are right. We do need to keep talking but I'm so far away from knowing where my HOUGHTON line cam from. I have interest in David HOUGHTON who shows on the 1830 and 1840 Census for Vershire, Vermont as a possible father to my great grandmother Melissa. Did he die before the 1850 Census or did he move to Illinois and then die? I'm searching for more about him. I find the person (Mrs. Elizebeth Houghton) that I hope was his wife married to Timmons in 1848 in Illinois. 1850 Illinois Census shows Timmons family including Melissa HOUGHTON, George W HOUGHTON, David HOUGHTON, and Sarah HOUGHTON. Anyone know about David of Vershire, VT.? Nancy Nichols

    1. Re: Houghton Legend and Migration a Theory
    2. Herman Kleine
    3. Carol and List, From much that I have read there is a distinct legend, maybe urban myth, that Houghtons in the USA descended from three brothers that landed during colonial times in Massachusetts, had many descendants that traveled south down the east coast and westward. In my wife's family the legend is that they descend from the younger brother of a Houghton titled line re "Houghton House" in England, who having heard the older inheriting brother had died decided to remain in the USA. Early migration patterns from Massachusetts tended to flow down the east coast by land as far south as Virginia. Migration to Georgia I believe tended to be by ship. Western migration seems to have been alternatively due west through New York through northern Ohio, leaving folks along the wasy and into Michigan ie Houghton Lake area. Further south they came across the mountains of Pennnsylvania and down the Ohio river to West Virginia, southern Ohio, Kentucky, southern Indiana and points west. From further south still they would have crossed the Cumberland gap from western Virginia into southern Kentucky. In my research I have not found evidence of Houghton migration through the Cumverland gap. There is plenty of evidence of the other two western migration. I know of no existing evidence that solidly links Massachusetts Houghtons with any of the southern branches but there does seem to be circumstantial evidence. Carol, there are a number of folks named Joab Houghton in the New Jersey branch. Likewise there are many instances of people from Culpepper, Virginia finding there way into the Ohio river valley. My gg-grandfather was Joseph Franklin HOUGHTON, born January 1862 and died November 1935. From what I have, he was born in Stewart County, Georgia, and then moved to Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, where he is buried with his wife, Lizzie D. McMickle. They were married in 1895 in Stewart County, GA. I have looked through censuses and can't seem to find any record of his early family or parents.
