    3. My gg gram, Mary Jane HOUGHTON was born in VT in ca 1829. One of my relatives say she is the dau of Chester and Hitty Wyman HOUGHTON. I have yet to verify this. Mary had 7-8 children, the 1st Jane Elizabeth SHAW, born in 1847 in Walworth Co, Wisconsin. Mary HOUGHTON & Samuel SHAW lived in Chicago (supposedly married there), Wisconsin and Minnesota. I have siblings (Permelia, Sarah, George, David & Elizabeth) and Mary's children if you are interested. I would welcome any correspondence. 1. Introduction
    2. Sid Geoghegan
    3. My research of Houghton has been restricted to Lancashire, England and more specifically to Formby. The 1841 Census of Formby records only the following Houghtons: Henry aged 60, Henry aged 30, John & Catherine both 25 and Thomas & Margaret both 20. Thomas is one of my wife’s great grandfathers and Henry senior her g g grandfather. From 1841 the family tree has expanded to more than 200, not including the present generation. Information has been obtained from Censuses, Parish Records held in the Lancashire Records Office, Memorial Stones and present family knowledge. I would be interested in any information that could take the research back to an earlier generation. Sid Geoghegan

    3. List owners, please excuse this message, but I would like to thank all the people who replied re the bushfires in NSW. Things are still desperate but I guess you will see it on your TV's. The houses lost to the fires appears to be about 160, luckily no lives or serious injuries have occurred. Worse conditions are expected over the weekend - much too frightening to contemplate at this stage. We can only pray that everyone comes through. Annette in Dubbo NSW

    1. Christmas Day in Australia
    2. Annette Pringle
    3. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Have a lovely day with your families. As you know, yesterday was our Christmas day and it was hot and very windy, not a very nice day at all but much better than many had in this state where bushfires are raging. About 80 houses lost, thousands of acres of farm land, tens of thousands of acres of bushland, both farm and bush animals. What a terrible day for all those involved from the victims to the firefighters who do the most wonderful job and to those who can not be with their loved ones because so many road closures have prevented them getting to their destinations. Having been involved in bush fighting when we were on the farm my heart goes out to all those involved not just the firefighters but also the support people who have worked tirelessly for days and who do not expect any reward and have missed out on Christmas day. I can only be thankful that none of mine are involved. Have a great day, I see on the web that it is snowing in Canada and Scotland - a traditional northern white Christmas. Best wishes to all Annette and Ian in Dubbo Australia

    3. Dear Annette, Merry Christmas to you also, slightly belated. I am so sorry to hear of the devastation in Australia right now. We here in Northern California are having just the opposite kind of weather. We have now had over 22 inches of rain in two months - more than double the average. If it keeps up, we are going to flood here. Last year we had drought... My wishes to everyone are peace throughout the world, A Houghton in Northern California, Arlene ----- Original Message ----- From: "Annette Pringle" <annettepringle@ozemail.com.au> To: <HOUGHTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 25, 2001 1:18 PM Subject: Christmas Day in Australia > Merry Christmas to you and yours. 3. Is anyone researching HOUGHTON in LEI. in the pre 1839 era? probably the Lutterworth area but can not confirm that. I have no idea who the siblings were for my Robert HOUGHTON born c1784. His parent were Samuel HOUGHTON and Sarah (no surname). I thought that perhaps if there were others in LEI. we could compare notes and see if we can connect. Annette in Dubbo NSW

    3. I've just found out that my Great Grandfather George Houghton, was a cabinet maker (furniture maker) in Birmingham West Midlands in circa 1880, a trade that (apparently) continued down the family line. Can someone assist with a lookup in some trade directoes about that time to see if any listings are available, or if these are availalbe on-line, direct me to their whereabouts? Thanks Paul.
