I am also looking for the HOUGH surname in Canada - Rose HOUGH married to George DURAND, with a son born on January 10, 1896. All I know is that Rose was born in Canada - no date or location. Any help would be appreciated! Ann, Thanks very much for checking your information. I'm sorry nothing turned up on my Samuel, but someday I'll find out who his parents were. Best wishes, Nancy
I note a lot of mention of Samuel Hough. Has anyone any connection to the Hough's in Canada. I believe they had a Stage coach run in Quebec-Montreal in the early 1800's. Names I have are Samuel & Catherine, Charles and a connection to John Cady Any suggestions and has anyone heard of this family Kind regards Pauline ----- Original Message ----- From: <primebham@aol.com> To: <HOUGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, 11 August 2001 12:07 Subject: [Hough] Samuel Hough > > > I only found two Samuels in my info. I will copy your message and look again in case I forgot something
I don't have a whole lot I can add to my message of the 27th re: Samuel Hough. He married Amanda at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Kensington in 1853. She was a widow and used her married name of Miller (maiden: Shetzline). I believe there was another Samuel Hough married to an Amanda (or possibly Armenda) in Phila. but I can't find my notes. My Samuel was definitely born 1832-1833. He said Aug. 1833 in the 1900 census, but 1832 matches his age given at various times. In directories he is listed as a mor. shaver or shaver. The 1860 census (where last name misspelled as Houghes) gave occupation as morocco d____ (couldn't make out). I found a bap. record in 1832 for a Samuel Huff, son of John & Rhoda Huff, but he was age 9 at time of baptism at St. George's ME Church. In the 1855 Phila. Directory there is a Samuel Huff, mor. shaver, at Rhyle ab. Hanover (the right area and occupation), but I don't know if it is my Samuel or the one who is 9 yrs. older. I have his Civil War pension records, Co. I, 95th PA Volunteers. He died Feb. 9, 1905, in Phila. and was buried at Palmer St. Cemetery and later moved to North Cedar Hill. Most of the time he and his wife lived in Phila., in Kensington or Northern Liberties. At some point they may have lived on Burlington Island, NJ (info. from my grandfather), and also lived with their son Samuel (my grandfather's father) in Atco, NJ, (1900 census). All census records for him (and all of his children) say he was born PA. Death record in pension file says born Ireland -- definitely a mistake. There is a possibility his mother's maiden name was Lake, but I say that only because my grandfather said his grandfather's brother Henry Hough took the Lake family Bible and moved to Elmira, NY. (However he may have confused that Henry with his father, Samuel, Jr.'s, brother Henry, and Lake may be on Amanda's side). Sorry if I have confused you. I'm just trying to think of anything I can add. A good portion of the decendants of Richard Hough are documented, and because my Samuel was taken in by family in Newtown, Bucks Co., we assumed he was connected to them somehow. I thank you very much for the time you have spent checking your records on my behalf!
I haven't been able to find anything yet. I found one but the year was ten years off. spouse name was same can you send anymore info Ann
Did you know that Flossie Hough was a Stewart? Her brother, Larance Theo Stewart, was my mom's father. Would you have any info on Flossie's Grandfather, Henry V. Stewart?
Ann, Thank you very much. My e-mail address is llnpolgar@home.com Nancy
re your message of 7-27-2001 I have printed it out and will see what I can find for from what I have. Let us keep in touch do you mind sending me your e-mail address
Do you have either of the published Hough Genealogies by Elmer Hough or Wallace Irwin Hough?
Dear Ann, I am at a standstill trying to locate the parents of my ancestor Samuel Hough; and as you seem to have quite a bit of information, I am wondering if you have a record of him. Samuel Hough, b. Aug. 1833 in PA. Had a brother Henry, both were in Civil War. (Supposedly Henry moved to Elmira, NY, sometime after the war.) Family story is their parents died in a yellow fever epidemic and they went to live with family (who were Quakers) in the Newtown, Bucks Co., PA, area. (They may have been living in NJ at the time of their parents' deaths.) Samuel married Amanda Shetzline in Phila. on 20 Mar. 1853. I have found no record of him prior to that. I have also found no record yet in Phila. of his birth, but we assume he was born there or in Bucks Co. Children of Samuel and Amanda Hough: 1. Emma (b. 26 Mar. 1854) married (1) William T. Raimond and (2) Harry A. Mershon. 2. William (b. 16 Feb. 1856) married ? 3. Samuel, Jr. (my ancestor) (b. 10 Sept. 1858) married (1) May McBride and (2) Annie W. Brinkman Teamer. 4. Edward (b. 25 Jan. 1861) married Annie. 5. Henry (b. 5 Jan. 1863) married Rebecca Rotan. There are many Samuels and Henrys in the descendants of Richard Hough, and I have been unable to connect him to any Hough family. Can you help? Nancy
Sorry, don't know anything about this family.
Hello Anne, Thank you for taking time to reply to my post. My Harry was born in 1886, in Cheshire, England http://www.cheshireset.co.uk and emigrated to Detroit. I have just found out that the following entry on Ancestry.com is my Harry. HOUGH, HARRY Residence: 48238 Detroit Wayne MI Death: Jun 1967 Also I believe that he had at least three sons Alan, Frank & Kenneth. Our family has said that during WWII two North American servicemen visited Harry's relatives. One we are certain was Doug Wilson (Harry's nephew) , his mother Ann Hough had emigrated to Thunder Bay, possibly at the same time as Harry? 8344 Ellsworth Street, Detroit 15362 Roselawn Street, Detroit 17323 Lindsay Street, Detroit, I have been fortunate enough to locate a lady who had copies of old Detroit City Directories and I now have information up to 1973. This is where I am stuck at the moment, I need to find out how long the Hough's were at Lindsay Street after 1973. I wondered if you were aware of anyone who had access to telephone directories for Detroit that may help. Thank you in advance for any advice Jim
Hello Bernice Thank you for taking time to reply, I appreciate it. regards
I have a Harold Hough from Detroit and then later Berrien County, Michigan. He was born in September of 1890. Do you have any info on the father or mother of your Harry?
Sorry, the Hough's I am researching came from Ontario to Bay City around 1860's. Fanny Hough married David Kimmerly in Ontario, both born ca 1793.
The only Hough (Huff) information I have is Fanny Hough (Huff) born Abt. 1793 at Fredericksburg Twp., Lennox & Addington Co. Ontario, Canada married David Kimmberly Fanny died March 06, 1882 at Kawkawlin Twp., Bay Co. Michigan Sorry I don't have any more Hough (Huff) information
Hello Rosalie, I wondered if during your research you had come across any Detroit Hough's. My first Hough in detroit is Harry in the early 1900s (his ancestry.com SSDI listing states he died in June 1967), and then his son's, possible names are Alan, Frank & Kenneth. I would love to complete this branch of my tree. Thanks for taking time to read this mail. regards
