    3. I hope I'm on the right track here... Fellow listers I am researching the following names: HOUGH HEYWOOD JAMES HOUGH married ANN DAVIES in Eng somewhere (no dates re their births/parents/marriage/death located). The cople had 9 children, who were all born at Sugar Meadow, Oldham, Lancashire. MARGARET b 13/06/1832 JOHN b 22/01/1834 JANE b 23/01/1836 ELIZABETH b 03/03/1839 EMMA b 24/05/1841 ANN b 19/10/1843 ROBERT b 27/12/1845 WILLIAM b 10/12/1847 SARAH ANN b 27/04/1850 I am interested in learning any more about JOHN HOUGH's siblings. JOHN HOUGH (born 22 Jan 1834, Oldham Lancs.) migrated ex Liverpool to Victoria, Aust aboard the "Titan" 22/05/1857 aged 23. ELIZABETH HEYWOOD(b Oldham, Lancs. c.1839 to JOHN HEYWOOD & ANN SHAW) also migrated ex Liverpool to Vict.Aust aboard the "Donald McKay" 07/05/1863 aged 24. Also on board were MARGARET HOUGH (JOHN HOUGH's sister) and her husband JOHN WILD. I believe John and Elizabeth must have known each other before emigrating as they were married in Bendigo, Victoria Australia in 1863. Either that or that may have met through MARGARET. I have located quite a lot of information about JOHN & ELIZABETH and their children, and am now interested in researching their parents (JAMES HOUGH/ANN DAVIES as well as JOHN HEYWOOD/ANN SHAW). I have seen a census return for 1851 which gives JAMES & ANN's address as '17 Monkey Road' - is there a still a street names that, and does the house still exist? The same census gives ANN DAVIES place of birth as Holywell Flintshire, and her dob approximately 1809. James pob was given as Cheshire, and his dob approx 1808. I'm hoping that someone somewhere can help me over this permanent looking brick wall. Has anyone else been experiencing problems with rootsweb mail recently? I have not had any messages for over a week now. Thankyou Julia Mitchell Albany WA Australia

    1. [Hough] Cheshire Life Magazine Article & American Hough Family Document
    2. B Hough
    3. Hello Listers, The following article was published in Cheshire Life in 1961, I located a copy in Macclesfield library. Is Your Name Hough Arms of Hough: Argent on a chevron style three crescents of the field. The shield is silver and there are three crescents of the same metals on a black chevron. If so, you may be able to trace your descent from a family living at Hough near Wynchbury in the thirteenth century. Richard Del Hogh had two sons Richard and Hugh. The eldest son is mentioned in deeds of 1316 and 1340, but appears to have died childless. His brother Hugh was Lord of Hough in 1352. He was custodian of Chester Castle and its constable in 1344 and 1345. It seems probable that he married Alice, daughter of Thomas de Aldelyme and left two sons Richard and William. Richard married twice and left two daughters, one whom married Richard de Masey who inherited Hough. William Hough was followed by his son William and the line was continued. Another family of the name were living at Thornton in the Wirral in the fourteenth century. When Richard, brother of Thomas Del Hogh, married the heiress of Roger Thornton of Thornton en le Hogh. Her mother had been heiress of William de Leighton and the Hough's thus acquired extensive estates. Thomas was a member of the jury who held an inquisition after the death of Nicholas de Vernon in 1388. At the commencement of the fifteenth century, Christopher Hough, Lord of Leighton and Thornton, married Margery, daughter and co-heir of David de Malpas of Hampton and Bickerton. His brother, Thomas Hough was serving in the kings forces in Ireland in 1399. William Hough, living in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, married a daughter of Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Sussex. A further branch of the Houghs lived in Chorley in the Macclesfield area, a prominent member being Roger, who was Incumbent of Wilmslow for many years, dying in 1587 at the age of ninety-five. Two members of the family, Henry and John, took part in the Battle of Worcester in 1651. ------------------------------ I was surfing the internet for Hough bits and bobs and located the following items for sale on e-bay, I wondered if they related to the ancestor/s of anyone on this list. Obviously I had just located it in e-bay and you can never be 100% certain that the item/s mentioned are genuine. Therefore read the information by all means but tread carefully, as I personally do not know if it is worth what the seller is asking. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1033810888 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1033812166 regards Jim
