    1. Joseph Horton Re-union Saturday, October 1, 2005
    2. Here is a copy of what I sent to VACARROL-L @rootsweb.com about the re-union. Tom The Joseph Horton re-union was held at the Methodist Church on Saturday, October 1 in Hillsville, VA. Joseph Horton was born ca 1782, most likely in Stokes County, NC. He came to Virginia to marry Mary Webb. They were married in August, 1801, and lived on her father's property for the rest of their lives. Henry Webb may have given them the property or let them live on it. There is no record of Joseph owning property. He was not active in county affairs. They had about 14 children (there is some question about exactly how many they had). The re-union is for their descendents. He lived till 1876 and Mary died 1875. They are buried in the Webb Thompson cemetery located on Snake Creek Road that begins about a mile outside of Hillsville on Route 58. The highlights of this meeting were furnished by Ronald Hall and Toni Lowe. Ron printed out a family history for all those who requested one, free. He has thousands of family history on his computer and generally charges for this service. It is a very modest fee. I was delighted; mine went back to about 1720. He must have done over 50 family histories. You gave him your name and dob, he entered it and printed out a tree format. Mine was about 5 feet long. Also, Ron wrote the definitive history of the Carroll County tragedy the occurred in 1912. He gives a very precise account, takes no sides, includes a diagram of the courthouse and the site and direction where shots were fired. Oh yes, he has pictures of the court house and people involved. There is a picture of Dexter Goad standing on the street in Hillsville with a bandage around his neck. He had been shot completely thru his neck, but not a single vital organ was struck. Ron has done so much work on the people of Carroll County and many people have asked and asked him to write a book on the county. Toni Lowe, a Quaker minister, spoke about Quaker history. I was not aware that Quakers had held a number of home meetings in Carroll County (known as Grayson County till 1842, when part of it became Carroll County). There has been a question by a number of people about how Joseph met Mary Webb. I would assume that it was at one of these home meetings. Quakers never established a meeting in Carroll and the meetings most likely stopped when many Quakers in NC moved to Ohio and Indiana. Quakers tended to move as a group and it was not uncommon for the whole community to move en masse. The Primitive Baptist church spread throughout the Western NC and VA area. Joseph and Mary were among the original members of the Snake Creek Baptist Church. I wish we could get more people to attend. Several years ago, as many as 300+ attended. This year we only had about 50-60 and future re-unions are uncertain at this time. Any thoughts on activities that would interest family members and get them to come out? It is mostly us older folks that attend now. Sincerely, Thomas W. Horton Glen Mills, PA
