Eli Horton enlisted on Sept. 3, 1862 as a private in the 27th Reg., Company A, New Jersey Volunteers. One record says he was mustered out on July 2, 1863 at “Neewa” (this could be Newark, NJ). He was buried in plot #49 œ at Walkill Cemetery, which is now known as the Phillipsburgh Cemetery in Orange County, New York. He is buried on what is known as Soldier's Hill, and his NJ Regiment is named on the tombstone. (Thanks to Marietta PicKell for this info.) I am curious if someone can name the parents of Eli, or any other New Jersey connection. Also, why is he buried in New York instead of NJ?
