He was the son of Fred Rudolphus Horton and Elizabeth Miller( Mary Elizabeth Cato- before her adoption). Grandson of Hollis Holkins Horton and Frances Jane Hilton. Great-grandson of Churchwell Horton and Elizabeth Smith. Great-great grandson of Hollis Horton and Molcy Jones, all of the "State Line" area of Union County, NC. He was a graduate of the UNC-CH, BS Physics and MS Physics. He was the meteorologist in charge of the weather bureau for the National Weather Service from 1950 to 1983 in Roanoke, VA. He was a 50+ year Mason, a Rotarian with 46 years of perfect attendance, active church member and "Father of the Year" for 1993 for Civic Affairs in Roanoke. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Loetta Willis Horton. He leaves two children, Fred L. Horton, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC, and E. Anne Horton of Roanoke. He has two grandsons, Joseph F. Horton of H! ickory, NC and Christopher Lee Horton of Roanoke.
