Her impeccable research, combined with a clear and perceptive understanding of her topic, has resulted in an unusually fine study of Jekyll's early history. This book will appeal both to serious students of the colonial and antebellum history of tidewater Georgia and to the general reader, and has been needed for a long, long time . . . well done in every respect!" --Buddy Sullivan, author of Georgia: A State History "From Jekyll Island's beginnings as an Edenic wilderness through exploration, settlement, revolution, and Civil War, June Hall McCash provides a fascinating foundation for understanding the historical origins of this coastal paradise." --James C. Cobb, Spalding Distinguished Professor, University of Georgia "June McCash's panorama of Jekyll Island sweeps from prehistory through the nineteenth century, but with a clear focus on the individuals who forged its rich heritage. Each wave of people to come to the island--Native American villagers, planters and slaves, Civil War soldiers in gray and blue--left its mark on Jekyll. These many threads come together seamlessly in a fresh and insightful narrative. By deftly blending people and place, McCash captures the breadth and complexity of Jekyll's past." --Martha Keber, author of Seas of Gold, Seas of Cotton From the foremost authority on the famed Georgia barrier island, here is the first in-depth look at Jekyll Island's early history. Much of what defines our view of the place dates from the Jekyll Island Club era. Founded in 1886, the Club was the private resort of America's moneyed elite, including the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, and Pulitzers. In her new book that ranges from pre-Columbian times through the Civil War and its aftermath, June Hall McCash shows how the environment, human conflict, and a desire for refuge shaped the island long before the Club's founding. Jekyll's earliest identifiable inhabitants were the Timucua, a flourishing group of Native Americans who became extinct within a hundred years after their first contact with Europeans. Caught up in the New World contests among France, Spain, and England, the island eventually became part of a thriving English colony. In subsequent stories of Jekyll and its residents, the drama of our nation plays out in microcosm. The American Revolution, the War of 1812, the slavery era, and the Civil War brought change to the island, as did hurricanes and cotton farming. Personality conflicts and unsanctioned love affairs also had an impact, and McCash's narrative is filled with the names of Jekyll's powerful and often colorful families, including Horton, Martin, Leake, and du Bignon. Bringing insight and detail to a largely untold chapter of Jekyll's past, June Hall McCash breathes life into a small part of Georgia that looms large in the state's history. JUNE HALL MCCASH teaches at Middle Tennessee State University. She is author of The Jekyll Island Cottage Colony and coauthor of The Jekyll Island Club. -- John McLeod, Publicity and Rights Manager University of Georgia Press, 330 Research Drive, Athens, GA 30602 P (706) 369-6160 | F (706) 369-6162 | jmcleod@ugapress.uga.edu Please visit us at http://www.ugapress.org.
Dan-I have just recently been in touch with a man whose wife's maiden name is Horton and is from this line. Let me try to contact them to see if they know someone who would be willing to do the DNA test. If it is too costly for them (I don't have a lot of extra money myself) maybe I could help them out. I would like to have proof of this line myself. I've only recently come back to this line after taking care of my Dad for the last year and a half before he passed away so a lot of my info is new to me. When I can get everything straightened out I will resend the info to the list. Does anyone know how many cousins from this line are on the list? Later. Marilyn Orr

Again, Thanks! They have been a brick wall for me for eight years now and it is such a relief to finally break it down. I'll gladly share what I have found so far. I have that Daniel was born between 1787 and 1791 in NC. He married Elizabeth (Polly was on their daughter's death certificate and Mary was on the census records) Clark in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY on 15 Feb, 1817. Ancestry has some info that says there was a Daniel Horton in Montgomery Co., MO in the 1830 census and in Madison and Iron Co., MO in the 1840 and 1850 census. The USGENWEB has a census for 1850 Madison Co., MO that has him listed with Mary and 10 others listed. They are Craven A. 25 b. KY, Mary A. 21 b. MO, Danl C. 19 b. MO, Rhoda ( my GG Grandmother) 15 b. MO, Jubus F. 13 b. MO, Jemmima 11 b. MO, Margrette 8 b. MO, Rebeca 6 b. MO, Eliza J. 4 b. KY, and Emily 26 b. KY. I'm not sure that the last two were their kids yet since they were born in KY. I haven't been able to positively find when they died and were buried but they were not on the 1880 census I assume they both died before then. Since most of the family lived and died around Jewett, Madison Co., MO I also assume they are buried there too. Their daughter, Rhoda married John Webb (another brick wall) about 1854 in MO and they had 9 children. They died in 1902 and 1913 respectively and are buried in the Miller (Green's Chapel) Cemetery in Jewett. I have more on this part of the family if anyone is interested. Marilyn Orr

Marilyn - The older Reuben was the father. A few children before Daniel made it look a little as though Reuben, Sr might be too old. But Daniel is the only Horton to show up in Hardin Co Records. Reuben Sr, b 1747 married but I have never seen her name. From Stafford Co they went on to Fairfax C VA for awhile and then a move to Wheats Creek on Green River in Rutherford Co NC. By 1810 they were in Warren Co KY and obviousky Daniel took a side trip into Hardin. After that you probably know more than anyone what happened to this couple. If you will share that info I will be grateful. Dan
Marylyn - In 1991 Martha F Horton informed me that this family was connected to Reuben Horton. We show the father Reuben to be b 1747 but more likely his son Reuben is more likely to be the father of Daniel and to be the Grandson of the older Reuben. This family goes back to Anthony Horton of Stafford Co Va.. Anthony died fairly young and Rueben was in NC for a time before coming back north into Kentucky. I will check further on him but he had a brother Adin, Aden Horton who appears in Jeffeerson Co KY by c 1773 or by 1782 for sure. Dan
I am trying to find if there is someone who knows about a Daniel Horton who was born about 1785-90 in NC. This Daniel married Elizabeth (Polly or Mary) Clark in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY in 1817. Her father, Thomas Clark signed for her. I can't find them again until they show up in the 1850 census for Madison Co., MO with several children. It has been suggested that he, Daniel, may be the son of Reuben and Rosamond Horton of NC and KY. Anyone who can connect Reuben and Daniel, PLEASE, contact me. Any hints or suggestions as to how I can find out where Daniel and Mary were until 1850 will be greatly appreciated also. Thano you. Marilyn Orr

Hi - I am not sure what question you are replying to. I can tell you that we are interested in all Horton pedigrees and Horton male descndants that desced from any Samuel Horton born before 1750 in any place of NC. We need a Horton descendant to apply for a DNA sample kit. for information on DNA, the project director can be reached by email <pelhamdan@aol.com>. But, all Horton males are invited and really, truly, needed to become a part of that family tree program. W have several already but the more who join in with samples the broader the base of connections to family branches or groups. Perry
