Hi Perry My brother is a Love so don't know how that would work with the Horton line. They are doing more and more with the tests though so maybe it won't be long before they can do more matches. We went through FamilyTree DNA so they have the sample still. We only had the 12 point test done and they can do the others with the same sample. Will check to see what can be done. Pat
I recently received an email from a person asking about the above line. Somehow my program has deleted her email. If you read this please send me another email. I have the info you need on this line and had a descendant's chart ready to send. Jackie Perkins-Horton Silverdale, WA
Hi Perry The date is about right for James to have married but his wife (on the 1850 census) was Arrena and she still used that name on a later census after James was apparently dead. Where was this marriage? I have Nelson in Grainger Co. in 1809 and 1810 along with what I would guess to be his brother, John. I've got a John married to Lucy Tanner someplace in my files but couldn't locate them on a bet right now. I live in California but will be in Rutherford Co and Hawkins Co the end of August and 1st part of Sept. Hugh Horton Sr. b ca 1655-61 d 1724 Westmoreland Co., mar Jane Snowdall/Snowden Hugh Horton Jr. b 1687-90 d 1766 Westmoreland or Stafford Co. mar Elizabeth Rawlins. You are right about William. I just took that from someones genealogy. We had our DNA tested through my brother a couple of years ago and made the connection to our next generation. I had been stuck on that line for 20 years. At that time there was only the straight line test for males. Now I understand there is a test for females. And I don't think ANYONE knows all there is to know about any line. But we keep on digging and little bits pop up every now and then. Pat
Pat - before I get to a reply to the goodies you sent, I want to thank for not skipping off to other foreign lands and leavin me here wondering how this all comes out in the end. For me you have cleared the long term question about Ann Doggles. We have had her marrid to two separate Hortons and it may be then that the other Horton could be your connection instead of to Nelson Horton. Give me more time to get into another database and will get back to you on this one. Now, we have Nelson to Elijah and Catherine Nelson Horton I desperately need a Horton male from Elijah's direct line to get a DNA sample made. Have you any idea how that could be done? I have one lonely female at about 85 years of age left as a survivor - an't that will not work. I will be in Russell county, VA over this coming weekend. This was the parent county of Scott, Lee and Wise. Are you near there? perry
Nelson Horton was married to Ann Douglas. The marriage record does name her as Doggles. But it's a printed copy and they made a mistake. Her father was Joseph Douglas and died in Grainger Co., TN. His estate sale was 16 Mar 1809 and Nelson was there buying things. On the 1810/20 (forget which) Nelson had 8 sons and 2 daus listed. He was the son of Elijah Horton, who was the son of John b 1717 a twin to William. John was married to Sarah Wheeler and he died in 1792 in Stafford Co., VA. John was the son of Hugh Horton Jr. and Elizabeth Rawlins, next was Hugh Sr and Jane Snowdall/Snowden. Both Hugh's died in Westmoreland Co., Virginia. Hugh Sr's father was William. Nelson later married Purlina Stovall in Rutherford Co and had another crop of kids. Nelson died in Coffee Co., TN ca 1786 or so. Can't remember for sure. I've been trying to tie my James to this Nelson forever but now I'm getting a little more skeptical about it. Can't prove or disprove it. As you can see I have a lot on this line. Pat
Pat - I checked Bedford Co TN and I had nothing that appeared to relate to your situation. A George Horton shows uo there by about 1859 and he is a younger brother of the James I sent to you earlier. Obviously I have an incomplete file, so anything related to this family that is not already said, would be useful down the road in time, if you care to share and perhaps it will help you, and us, in the future. This is always a work in progress. If there is a male Horton in that branch that could have a DNA test we are in support of and have information about that - but it is a separate project. perry
Dan - Actually there appears to be more than one Hugh Hortons contemporary with each other. One in Bertie Co NC estate sttled in 1736, John Horton Executor and one in Westmoreland Co VA, Hugh Horton, Jr inventoried 1724. While they may prove to be one and the same Hugh Horton, there has been no evidence of that except the recent DNA tests which show a match down the line from what could be two separate branches from the same Hugh Horton. There is no evidence to support the fact that Hugh Horton Sr of Bertie Co., NC had a son Joseph. But this is a good start in the right direction to resolve these issues and thank you for this information. Perry
We have a James Horton b. 1832 s/o Jefferson Horton / Elizabeth Norvill; s/oNelson Horton/Ann Doggles. Have nothing on Arrena or dau. Rachel m. James Harvey Thomas. These are Rutherford Co TN records but does not mean these folk were always there. They came into SW VA perhaps by 1808. May give you some ideas. perry

Dan - on paper there is no Joseph Horton in the estate settlement of Bertie Co NC in 1736. But that does not mean to say you are incorrect or DNA is wrong. I checked on Horton Sr's son Hugh Horton Jr (of Bertie Co NC)- but there are no solid dates on him from the extracts of the settlement. Since a son John was the executor I presume that he may have been the older of the siblings. perry
I too am searching for a Rachael Horton, dau of James Horton and Arrena, born 1849, married James Harvey Thomas. They are in the 1850 census of Rutherford Co., TN. Another dau Harriet was born 1829 in Bedford Co., TN. Anyone know of this family? Pat
Perry, From the DNA study, It appears that we are connected to Hugh through Joseph Horton who died in Granville Co... NC in 1765 , who is also the father of David Horton of Wake co. NC who died in 1784. We have proof through Wills that David of Wake who died in 1784 father was Joseph as Joseph left in his will some property to Samuel , his grandson, who was also the son of David of Wake. David of Wake's brother Samuel was the executor of the Will. Dan Hoyle

If you think, or know, that you are connected to this Horton ancestor b. c1695, Westmoreland Co VA; went to Stafford Co VA - we need your input - how you connect - how you have heard you connect - or any other data that has a reference to the family group. If you know of anyone who is connected, please relay this message. This Line may have the DNA of Tobias Horton b bef 1630; d. after 1656VA. Perry Horton - VP: Horton Family Association
Eileen - In reply to your question about Hortons of Byron Horton's book "Horton"going to Canada, that is a negative. Perry
Eileen - I will check my other computer for that name. I do have several Hortons that are Canadian or went there during the Rev War and many or their descendants came back into this country by various routes. some left around 1756 to Nova Scotia because of cheap land. Others were there no doubt on military assignments after it was taken away from the French. a lot were sailors who worked all around the Lakes and lived at their most convenient place of work. Will get back to you on this guy and I know it is a difficult thing to research those guys. I will get back to you from screen address <HORTON03@aol.com>. Perry
This family is fairly well documented in a book by Byron Horton "Hortons." I have a copy - what is your question? Or how can I help?perry horton
