Hi: I checked in my FTW cd's and found a Donald Horton b May 24,1929 d apr 1968 with Social Sec. #563-36--3880. If this helps you should probably write the Soc Sec Administration which may have more info. His card was issued in CA so write the State Capitol for his birth & death certificate which sometimes gives quite alot of information. Was Danner, Alice's maiden name or married name, whoever helps you will need to know that. Good hunting. Dear Jamie, have you gotten copies of the death certificates? This is an essential 1st step. Also look for obituaries. These can usually be obtained through interlibrary loan. Next work back through every census record. Parents often lived with children. Make note of everyone with the surname. You may find yourself back several generations in no time. Good Luck. Michael Ann Brown.
Perhaps someone with one of those 2 prized Horton genealogies can tell us if any of those Southold, Long Island NY Hortons filter down through NJ and wind up in Cumberland, Salem and Cape May Counties. (Or, is there a "black sheep" son who disappeared?) My southern New Jersey Hortons include a Humphrey or Umphrey who was old enough to sell land as early as 1805; 2 or more George Hortons; David; William; Isaiah; Samuel and other names. Although most of these are common names, I believe "Humphrey" appears as a woman's maiden name in the Long Island genealogy, possibly giving us a good clue. Another hint is that these counties seemed to attract many other families from Southold, possibly to pursue whaling and other sea professions. The land records I consulted only go back to 1804, so Humphrey may not have been the first Horton in South Jersey. I do have 1800s-1900s Census and more data, once we determine anyone else is interested. - Dolores in DE -----Original Message----- ((clip)) Please help me link up my recent ancestors with older Hortons of the Southold, LI area.

Nellie Horton (died Fisher) was my great grandmother. Her parents were Catherine and George Horton. Nellie was born 26 September 1906 and died in 1982. She had an older brother Benjamin (born 9 Oct 1902) and another brother George. According to my mom, there was another Nellie Horton previously born to Catherine and George, who died as an infant. When I was a young teen in the early 80s, "Uncle Ben" (Nellie's brother) showed me a genealogy book on the Hortons tracing ancestry back to the 1600s. I assume it was _Hortons in America_ by White, or _Descendants of Barnabas Horton_ by McLaurin. Though it's not certain I'm descended from Barnabas, I seem to recall Ben saying something about being descended from another immigrant lineage. I believe he and his siblings were listed in the book. Ben died in 1985 and I have no idea what became of the book. Also, my grandmother Eileen was born in 1924 to Nellie, and another Horton, Oliver. We don't really know much about Oliver. Any information that can help me link these folks up with previous generations would be appreciated. Scott
