    3. All the names you speak of here are in the book, "The Descendants of Thomas Horton" compiled by A. J. Horton in 1912, published by the Ward Printing Company of Buffalo, NY. Most of it sounds pretty authentic. Not sure of the Squire Henry, but Squire Horton (1784) & Charlotte Linsey (1803) had son Squire Horton (1806) married Judy Yeoumans (1839) had son Squire Haskell E. Horton (1862) and the latter had a sister Orcelia Ann Horton (1857) plus six other siblings. I hope I followed this through correctly. Does this help? 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: DUNCOMBE, HORTON, GELL Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BBk.2ACIB/2357 Message Board Post: G'day, Thomas HORTON born Lancashire, England, about 1803. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) for seven years, arrived 1821 per "Lady Ridley". Convicted in VDL 1834, sentenced to transportation for Life. Removed to Norfolk Island. 2. Carolee Chapman
    3. It's possible she was visiting relatives at the time the census came around. My great grandfather was visiting his daughter in WA state in 1930 and is listed there with them instead of in MI where he died a few months later. Carolee Isaiah named sons George W. and Jonathan, and had a daughter Mary. Records call his wife Dorcas, Leorcus, Patience and Patience Dorcas, then she's missing in the 1870 Census (although Isaiah is called Married). Someone put her Patience name in the IGI, but this may have simply been based on a single Census. I found Jonathan buried at Head of the River, and my George W. (1839-1862) was originally buried at Trinity in Millville, then reinterred at Mt. Pleasant.

    3. I kept a clip from David Horton of this List, who mentioned there was an Abraham Horton, "born c1722 whose earliest record starts in Philadelphia and Bucks County, PA." Maybe David can update us, but I believe "earliest record" implies a tax or property transaction (therefore Abraham was at least age 18 and 1722). Also, I have Hortons myself who lived not far from Philly, in Cumberland County, NJ. I descend from an Isaiah Horton who was born between 1803 and 1812 (sources vary), probably in S. Jersey. So far I believe Isaiah's father was John Humphrey Horton who died in South Jersey in 1834. He went by Humphrey and even Umphrey/Umfrey. He appears in Cumberland County deeds by 1802, but I have not yet gone to the NJ Archives to see if there were earlier references. Isaiah named sons George W. and Jonathan, and had a daughter Mary. Pleasant. One source says Humphrey came down from New York or New England, but his whereabouts before 1802 could be from any direction. It's worth comparing our info and hunches.

    2. In reply to Rog at [_rhg910@earthlink.net_ (mailto:rhg910@earthlink.net) ] on 3/17/05: I am a descendent of Amos Horton, Sr, and a member of SAR through his son, JOHN. National Membership No. 160907, and Alabama Membership No. 2354, in the name of Luther Garland Horton, Jr. My line: Amos, Sr/John/Hardy/Melissa m. William Ransom Horton/Hilliard Judge/Luther K./ Luther Garland, Sr. Melissa married her second cousin, William Ransom Horton, son of Sterling, son of William, son of Amos, Sr., thus giving me a double connection. I have a copy of JOHN's Estate Probate Record which agrees with the data in your email inquiry. It is a very poor copy, with no dates other than 15 January 1818, when 233 acres were resurveyed, showing that John had conveyed 2 1/2 acres for the Hanging Rock Methodist Church. If you want a copy of the Probate record, send me your snail address, and let me know if you have any further questions. Garland Horton
