Author: ann18238 Surnames: Erasmus Thomas Horsley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.horsley/416.1.1.3.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great-grandfather, John Horsley, was born in South Dalton, Yorkshire, the child of Richard Horsley and Ann Fenton. By 1925 he was living in Steelhouse Lane in Birmingham. I had two great aunts, both born in the 1860s who said their family came from Riddings in Derbyshire. There I found Erasmus Thomas Horsley and his family but could not go on to prove any connection between the two families. Then I found that John's eldest child, and only daughter, married a Riddings Man, Thomas Rogers. He was a witness to the will of Erasmus Thomas. So the plot thickened. Enquiring of other researches I was assured that Erasmus was born in Riddings, and I know the 1851 census gives this. They also said that he was the son of Thomas who was born there in 1777. However, no one could prove this or tell me why they thought this. Erasmus was married in West Bromwich to Ann Watson. John also married in West Bromwich and a witness was Thomas Horsley. Now I have discovered the men! tion of Erasmus's marriage in the marriages section of the Birmingham Post of 19 January 1824. It tells me that Mr Thomas Horsley was married recently at St James, West Bromwich to Miss Anne Watson eldest daughter of Mr B Watson, both of Steelhouse Lane. I can think of no other reason for this couple to be in Steelhouse Lane unless they were staying with with family and related to John. Comments please.
