Author: KatharineLND Surnames: Horsley, Caseman, Dillow Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.horsley/370.4/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A 1902 letter we found in my mother's papers when she died last month confirmed that William "Frederick" Horsley is our great grandfather. He was never married, but living with Amanda in Vanceburg, Lewis County, in the 1880's when he fathered our grandmother, Grace Lee Martin Dillow, by Mary Jane Caseman. Interestingly, he attended Mary Jane's wedding to another man 8 months after his daughter, Grace, was born. He had moved to Friendship, IL, by the time the letter was written, in the area where two other Horsley sibs were living. I would be pleased to have any other information on William Frederick or what happened to Amanda. Katharine Dixon Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great-great grandfather, a Dr. Horsley and his wife and baby (I have no first names or surnames) came to Wildcat Landing,Arkansas, from Tennesse(maybe Martin, TN). I assume this to have in early to mid-1800s. I know they had one son, Addison Davis, who married Mary Jane Milner. They lived in Lonoke Co., Arkansas. Their grandson, William Addison, married Dora Johnson; these were my grandparents. Thank you for any info you can provide. 1. [HORSLEY] William Horsley & Hannah Ryan--Parents of John B., T.T., & Mary
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jhorsley46 Surnames: Horsley, Hasley, Ryan, Allison, Parton, Huff Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.horsley/486/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Through a combination of primary records research and DNA testing, we have finally discovered the North Carolina family of brothers JOHN B. HORSLEY and THEOPHILUS T. HORSLEY, and their sister MARY HORSLEY (rather then "Mary Hasley") who married Moses PARTON. Their parents were WILLIAM HORSLEY and HANNAH RYAN of BURKE COUNTY, NC. A then-common pronunciation and variant spelling of Horsley was "Hosley." William Horsley is listed in the 1808 Burke County tax list as "Wm. Hoslee" (the only surviving record found so far for him in NC). The 1811 bond for his widow's marriage to Burch Allison names her "Hannah Hostley." His daughter Mary's name is spelled "Hosley" on the original folder for Moses Parton's 1828 marriage bond at the NC State Archives, and the bond itself has "Marey Hasley," another proved variant of Horsley. William Horsley of Burke may be the "William Hasley" in Frederick Co, MD in the 1800 census with 1 male 26-44 in the household, but that is not yet proved. (Note: the Ancestry.com summary for this census entry is wrong--it picked up the next line on the right side of the page.) According to DNA testing, the line of William Horsley in Burke Co, NC was related in some way to the line of James Horsley Jr. (b. 1731, MD), but contrary to long-held assumptions, this William of Burke was not James Jr.'s son William, nor was he William N. Horsley of York Co, SC (b. c1812, a great-grandson of James Jr.). The line of William Horsley of Burke and the line of James Horsley Jr. may have shared the same ancestor as recently as the 1600's in Maryland, but further DNA testing is being done to try to clarify that. For more information, see "Theophilus T. Horsley and John B. Horsley: Who Were Their Parents" at: www.joanhorsley.org A revised version of that report will be available once DNA testing is finalized. ----------------------------------------- OVERVIEW of the FAMILY of WILLIAM HORSLEY and HANNAH RYAN Father: WILLIAM HORSLEY [aka "William Horsley of Burke"] Born: probably Maryland - date uncertain Married: Abt. 1801, perhaps in Burke Co, NC, to HANNAH RYAN Residence: 1808 Burke Co, NC Tax List as "Wm. Hoslee" - 1 poll, no land, no slaves He may be the "William Hasley" in Frederick Co, MD in the 1800 census with 1 male age 26-44, 14 slaves, which could indicate he was an overseer. No Frederick County deed record of land ownership was found [Frederick Deed Book Index 1778-1803, MSA CE 455-2]; tax lists have not yet been checked. If William of Burke Co, NC was also an overseer, this could account for his owning no land or slaves on the 1808 Burke Co. tax list. DNA test results show that the line of William Horsley of Burke Co, NC was related in some way to the line of James Horsley Jr. (b. 1731, Queen Anne's Co, MD), but the results also show that contrary to long-held assumptions, William of Burke was not James Jr.'s son William, nor was he William N. Horsley of York Co, SC, a great-grandson of James Jr. The most recent common ancestor shared by the two lines could have been in the 1600's in Maryland, but pending DNA results may help to clarify that. For more Horsley family research, see reports at: www.joanhorsley.org Died: Abt. 1809, Burke Co, NC - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mother: HANNAH RYAN Born: 3 Apr 1780 in South Carolina (Charleston?) Hannah's father was James Ryan who immigrated to the U.S. in 1780, then "was killed on a ship out of Bristol at Charleston that same year." Hannah's mother was also named Hannah. [Ryan information from Maggie Laurenz's 2005 post to RootsWeb Allison Mail List, citing a Ryan family Bible.] Not yet known if/where/when Hannah's mother re-married. Married: 1) c1801, perhaps in Burke Co, NC - WILLIAM HORSLEY 2) 2 Jan 1811, Burke Co, NC - BURCH ALLISON - b. 24 Feb 1764, Frederick Co, MD in the part that became Montgomery Co. in 1776; married 2nd (or 3rd?) "Hannah Hostley" (sic, Horsley) by bond in Burke Co, NC; d. 1848, McDowell Co, NC, formed from Burke 1842. Revolutionary War soldier, Pension File S6493, served from Maryland. Burch Allison and Hannah had at least one child, Anna Allison who married Moses Parton's brother John Parton, in addition to Burch being stepfather of William and Hannah Horsley's children. Died: After 1850 Hannah, as Hannah Allison, last appears in censuses in 1850 in McDowell Co, NC, formed primarily from western Burke Co. in 1842. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CHILDREN of WILLIAM HORSLEY and HANNAH RYAN All children were born in North Carolina according to censuses, presumably in Burke County, the only NC county found so far with an early Horsley family. 1. THEOPHILUS T. 1. [HORSLEY] Valentine Horsley's wife Sarah Kendrick
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jhorsley46 Surnames: Horsley, Kendrick, Irby, Lawson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.horsley/482/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Valentine Horsley's wife Sarah Kendrick was a daughter of Thomas Kendrick (b. c1730) of Halifax County, VA. I have recently completed a research report from primary records on "THOMAS KENDRICK and FAMILY" now available online at: www.joanhorsley.org In the course of my Kendrick research I found primary records that show some of the information currently wide-spread on the internet is incorrect. For example: 1. Thomas Kendrick's wife was not named "Dolly Lawson." His wife's given name was NANCY, and her maiden name is still unknown. "Lawson" is only a speculation not yet proved. 2. THOMAS KENDRICK did not die in 1787 in Halifax County, VA. He lived in Halifax through 1789 and died in York County, SC about 1794. 3. Thomas and Nancy Kendrick's daughter SARAH KENDRICK, wife of VALENTINE HORSLEY, was not born in Wales but in Halifax County, VA. However, Thomas Kendrick himself may have been from Wales. 4. Thomas and Nancy Kendrick's daughter ANNE KENDRICK did not marry JOHN IRBY on 12 Mar 1788. Their marriage bond was dated 7 Mar 1789, and they were married on 10 Mar 1789 in Halifax County, VA. (Also contrary to some websites, Anne did not sign her marriage bond, and she likely was not literate, which was normal for women of her time and place.) The evidence and record sources for these statements are included in the research report as well as discussions about how the mistaken information came about. You can use the search/find function in the online report or the index to find particular people or topics of interest. The research report includes a timeline of records that reveal much about Thomas Kendrick and his family's life as well as their community, friends and relations. I welcome any comments, questions, or corrections you may have. Joan Horsley [email protected] www.joanhorsley.org Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Does anyone know anything about this family? I stumbled across this William in the 1880 census for Osage Township in Benton County Arkansas: William W M 45 b. Kentucky Martha W F 35 Wife b. Tennessee Ada W F 6 Daughter b. Arkansas Hobbs (?) 4 W M Son b. Arkansas Burrel W M 80 Father Virginia I looked back to 1860 census and didn't find Burrel or William. I AM still searching for the father of Berry L. Horsley. Wondering if this could be a possible lead to something. About all I know for sure about Berry L. is that he, according to census, was born in Kentucky someplace in, or around, June 1817. By 1850 he was in Illinois. He died in Hunnewell Kansas in 1884 and is buried in Coles County Illinois. -- "A good moral character is the first essential in a man." George Washington _ _... ..._ _ _._ ._ ..... ._.. ... .._
