    1. [HORSLEY] Tamar Sophia HORSLEY
    2. Graham
    3. One of my great-great grandmothers was called Tamar Sophia HORSLEY. She had two sons that I know of, Fred HORSLEY born in about 1867 and John Joseph HORSLEY, born in October 1868 (my great grandfather). Their father seems to have been Joseph BOWKER (they were recorded as his sons in the 1871 census) and later changed their surname to Bowker. In the 1871 census, Fred and John Joseph lived in Lindley, Huddersfield. Both changed their last name to Bowker. Tamar Sophia HORSLEY was born in about 1833, although I don't know where. She doesn't seem to be in the 1861 census, although it is possible that HORSLEY is her married surname (not that I can find a Tamar Sophia marrying anyone called HORSLEY). She died in 1870 of smallpox, aged about 37 in Lindley, Huddersfield, where she is buried. I can find Sophia HORSLEY's (lots of them) and one Tamar but none anywhere near Huddersfield (the only Tamar seems to have been born and married in Cumberland). She may have had a preferred name (one of my great-grandmothers was called Martha Hannah, but preferred Clara - if my mother hadn't known this, I would have struggled to find her). If you have any information on her, I would be grateful to hear from you. Graham Cambridge, England

What I saw was an index which, of course, is some transcriptionist's interpretation of what was written. I looked again and the index clearly has an "L" in it. I certainly found no other reference whatsoever to "Isaac Horsley" so it may be merely a transcription error. Just thought I'd see if anyone actually knew, vs suspected, anything. Given the lack of any other reference, I'd agree that it's most likely an error. Wanted to be as sure as possible. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There was a Thomas Hillman in Somerset at the same time as Isaac Horsey. Although sometimes Horsley got misspelled as Horsey and vice versa, the two families were distinct in Maryland by the later 1600's and not thought to be related. (Given some of the early to mid-1600's records in Maryland and Virginia, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually were somehow related, but so far all I've got are hints and clues with no hard proof for that hunch. Maybe some day DNA will say.) -Joan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Apparently my ggrandfather, William Henry Fox referred to the girls as his cousins and my grandmother was in touch with the son of Mabel Marriot, Durose, I am really interested to find out where Millicent Fox Marriot fits in. As far as I can see she is not of the Marriot clan, her birth is registered as Millicent Fox Marriot but she disappears from the census in 1881, b about 1878 I think, and reappears in 1891 with the Marriots. William Henry Fox's father was a soldier and died in India, did Millicent 's father and mother die abroad. Any info would be helpful, just curiosity really, can give you any info on WH Fox and our line if you are interested Hilary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you are a Horsley you must know Cassandra? She gave me the info re ETH and Ann. She has a lot of data re the Derbyshire Horsleys. She thinks ETH's parents were a Thomas Horsley and another Ann. Who were John Horsley's parents? Cassandra recently sent me a coy of ETH's will showing that he cut out his son Charles (our mutual ancestor)because he became involved with James Oakes and family installing "piped" water in London. ETH consider he had been "made poor" by their actions. Not sure what that means, but I think he was angry that he had been left out of the business arrangements. It would be nice to see if your John was related to ETH, but would entail a lot of searching in the parish records no doubt.Let me know if you find anything. Erasmus called his first son Thomas. My earliest found ancestor was John Horsley who was born in East Yorkshire in 1794 to Richard and Ann Fenton. He travelled to Birmingham in the 1820s and died there in 1862. But his granddaughters - my great aunts - told me that the family came from Riddings in Derbyshire and when they died I found an address book with Riddings' addresses in. So I made my way to Riddings and found the memorial window to Erasmus and his wife in the church and also his will. But I have never been able to find his baptism and no-one has yet come up with a date or transcription. I am convinced that ETH married Ann Watson in West Bromwich in 1823. I have a copy of the entry. This is also the church where my John married his second wife witnessed by a Thomas Horsley. And the will of ETH was witnessed by Thomas Rogers who happens to have married Amelia Horsley the daughter of John. So I believe I have enough to make me think that ETH was the younger brother of my John although I cannot prove it. Any comments? I have recently come across a family called Woodford who has Erasmus Thomas Horsley in their tree showing a Thomas Rashleigh as his father. Do you know anything about this? I got all my info from Cassandra last year. She seems to think that Erasmus's father was a Thomas Horsley from Alfreton, Derbyshire. She also has details about Erasmus's marriage in West Bromwich, but the Woodfords say he was married in West Virginia! It can't be the same one can it? I was interested to see your message from last year asking Cassandra how she knew who Erasmus's father was. Unfortunately, Cassandra is no longer a member of ancestory, but I have told her of my findings and she is very confused. If you know anything about Thomas Rashleigh and a Horsley connection, please could you let me know. Thank you. Peta Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
