Service, James Hunter Ch:DAR, Madison,NC, 1977, at UVA's Alderman Lib., page 50. According to claim for widow's pension (NC Cert #3108) made by Jerusha Hooker on June 20, 1838 in Stokes CO, NC, Wm. Hooker was drafted Aug 1776 from Surry CO, NC (later Stokes CO) under command of Capt. Richard GOODE in Col. Joseph William's Reg of NC Mil. against Cherokee tribe of Indians & ret. homne on Christmas Day. On next tour he vol. as private under Capt. Meredith at Richmond, Surry CO Courthosue, but was marched to Salisbury and put under command of Capt. smith and was in battle at Brier Creek in SC where he had to swim a river to escape from theBritish. He ret. home when she & her bro. John Lawson, were planting corn in May 1779. The next service he went for 3 mos on horse under capt. Joseph Clud, a neighbor on Dan River, in the summer 1780 & Joseph Winston was major; he was in the Battle of King's Mt where his horse was shot & crippled so he guarded prisoners while marching them to Old Moravian Town in Durry CO. Next he enlisted for duration under Capt LEWIS, she thinks, and was in Batt. of guilford Ct House, a battle at Camden, sC, and Battle of Yorktown in VA, where Cornwallis "give up.' On may 2, 1839, John Lawson appeared before Charles Banner, JP of Stokes CO, NC, and gave oath that he was bro. of Jerusia HOOKER; that Rev. Wm. Stepehns pub the Bans agree. to the Rules & Customs of the CH; and he m or solem. Rites of Mat. betw. Wm. HOOKER & his sister Jerusia; the he was about 15 & lived w/his siter until shorlty after Battle of Kings Mt when he was sent by his father John Lawson, now dec'd, toHalifax CO, Va, to live w/his rel. about 2 years; hene, he could only testify as to what he had been told by his brother-in-law after that. Jerusha Hooker was entered on pension roll of NC at rate of $43.33 anum. Ch. from family bible & comments furnished in applicatoin. One dau. m. Bealsey Mabe.
