Joyce--The Stephen Hooker who appears on the l790 Tyrrell Co., NC census was the eldest son of Sheriff John and Elizabeth Mary (Swain) Hooker. He first shows up on deeds in Tyrrell about l765 and in l780 married Martha Craddock. She was probably his 2nd wife. Stephen had a number of children, but I only know of 3. One was Francis, for whom Stephen registered a mark and brand in l784. Francis appears on the l810 census for Pasquotank Co., NC, and d. ca. l837. He was grantor in a deed to Stephen in Tyrrell Co. in l80l. Another son of Stephen was named Stephen and he appears on the l800 Tyrrell Co. census on the same page as Stephen, Sr. This could be the same Stephen who m. Mary Ward in l79l in Tyrrell Co. Of course, there was also a Stephen who m. Polly Wilcox in l798 in Pasquotank Co. Finally, I also believe that Stephen Hooker, Sr., (b. ca. l746/7) was the father of a son named Nathan. This could be the same Nathan who d. ca. l807 in Pasquotank Co. Of course, we have never accounted for the Nathan who was the son of Sheriff John so the Nathan in Pasquotank could be that Nathan.
