Hello Fellow Hookers! This is the first time I've written the list - greetings to all my cousins out there! I was wondering if anyone out there could help me. My name is Zebulon Vance Hooker, III. I am 41 years old and live in Salem, Virginia. My father is, fortunately, still with us. He will be 80 in October. We have a small mystery on our hands and that's why I'm writing in the hopes someone out there may be able to help. My father was not born with the name "Zebulon Vance Hooker, II". His name on his birth certificate is "William Huper Harbaugh Hooker". He did not know this until he was in his mid thirties. He found out when he requested a copy of his birth certificate, and found that the name he expected to see was not there! Fortunately (or no?) his mother was still alive at the time, so he asked her why the "William" name was on his birth certificate. She told him that his father was Zebulon Vance Hooker, and had died of a brain aneurism shortly after my father was born and after my father had been given the name William Huper Harbaugh Hooker. So, she changed his name to his father's name without notifying anyone. He was a baby at the time and never knew otherwise - so he grew up never knowing he had another name. When I was born, he passed it on to me, thus making me the third. His mother was very "eccentric". I'm not entirely sure I believe what she told him. Here's why: We have only one supposed photo of my father's father. It doesn't look anything like him. Supposedly, the "first" ZVH died in Richmond, Virginia (where my father was born) around 1922-23. There is no record of that in the obituaries in the Richmond papers. In fact, I can't find *any* records of him existing in Richmond at all. But I *did* find a Zebulon Vance Hooker in *Florida* - who was born in 1890. That would have made him 30 years old when my father was born. He did not die in Virginia, but Florida, and lived into the '60's, I believe. I wonder what the odds are of TWO Zebulon Vance Hookers living at the same time - one in Richmond (who mysteriously disappeared) and one in Florida? But, stranger things can happen - I just found a "Zebulon Hooker" (not sure if his middle name is Vance or not) who lives - now, I believe, - in Boynton, Florida. His phone number (like mine!) is unlisted. In fact, Florida seems to be *the* happening place for Hookers!! Sorry to ramble! Is there anyone out there who may have some information about a Zebulon Vance Hooker who may have been in the Richmond, Virginia area around 1919-1923 or so??
