My name is Beau Hooker, and a few weeks back I posted to the list regarding the whereabouts of my grandfather, Zebulon Vance Hooker, of Richmond, Virginia. Thanks to all for their replies - especially Ernie!! Since then, I've done a little sleuthing and turned up his death certificate. Sure enough, ZVH died on December 8th, 1920 of an "embollism of pulmonary vessels". Of interest above is that, listed on his death certificate was his birthplace - simply "North Carolina" and his parents: Hymerich Hooker and Bettie Tyson, of North Carolina. My father's sister (who died in the mid 60's of multiple sclerosis) was named Bettie Tyson Hooker. Zebulon V. Hooker married Josephine Harbaugh - my grandmother. Her sister was named Sallie Harbaugh and is listed on the death certificate as the "informant". Here is what I found out from a cousin, Walter Hooker, who practices law in Richmond today. (Admittedly, this is hearsay) Zebulon Hooker was one of 10 siblings who (according to Walter) are: Oscar Hooker (He owned the James McGraw company of Richmond where ZVH worked as vice president), Seth, Lawrence, Henry, Mary, Rose, Sarah, Louesia and Bettie. Oscar Hooker, (ZVH's brother) still has 2 surviving grand-daughters: Virginia Levering, of Richmond, VA. and Jeane Marie Brownley of Virginia Beach. I spoke on the phone with them both - they were very nice - but had little to no memory of any useful events as their father (Oscar), died when they were babies. (As did my father's father - Zebulon Vance Hooker, when his son - my father - was just 2 months old.) All this is *very* interesting when taking into account that there was, seemingly *another* Zebulon Vance Hooker alive in Florida in 1920. It's been speculated that HE might be my grandfather, but I am holding in my hands as I type this ZVH's death certificate which I just acquired from the Commonwealth of Va. Bureau of Vital Records. Unless he faked his death and moved to Florida, (possible, but not likely) there WERE two ZVH's running around! Incidently, the story goes that in my family, Zebulon Vance Hooker and his brother Oscar were in the distillery business in North Carolina prior to prohibition shutting them down and their subsequent move to Richmond. Hope this helps and sheds some light on the subject. I'd be most interested in anyone's comments, thoughts, speculations and of course, evidence. Many thanks to you all!! Zebulon Vance Hooker, III (Beau)
