Charlotte, it could be that James is the son of one of the William Hookers or one of the brothers in NC. The Hookers had been living in the northern part of the state for many years by 1827. I'll see if I can find some info that looks helpful for that time period. You might try some census records from Bertie County, Tyrell County, Hereford County, etc in NC.
