    1. Re: [HOOKER] mid-westAtten Maureen
    2. Adella Holly
    3. The sentence should have read "all the Mid-West Hookers are a mix - of several lines" - then I list the lines including at least one German family that came in the mid 1800s and changed the spelling to Hooker. I should have put a colon or soemthing after mix, as of course I know that is the big problem with finding one's Hooker roots in the mid-west - all the differetn lines moved to that area - even some of the VA/NC lines so they are all intermixed there. I know that Thomas Hooker's descendants did move west evetnually - some of them stayed in New England longer than other families as they were such a prominent family. The New Eng Hookers seemed to move west - in fact many New Englanders moved - later than some of the VA families. We discussed that on this list some time ago - the New England area was more settled and had move amentities - people seemed to stick around longer in that area. Some left after the textile factories (and other factories) were first mechanized, then later were being peopled by immigrants, etc., and there wre fewer jobs. Also, some of the MA/CT families moved into other New Eng states and New York and stayed there rather than moving west. If you read further I mentioned all the different Hooker lines that moved into the mid-west during the early and mid-1800s - the period that the query I was responding to was about. (I did not mean to state that only Joseph Hooker's - who were from MA/CT as well- line went through there, though I think they did travel west maybe before some of Thomas' line did). 3. Everyone might try to ask their public libraries to see if they have Ancestry Library online? The usually one can access that library version - which is the full Ancestry file - from one's onw computer with one's library card # - my library is a smaller public library but it does have Ancestry online! The book "Descendants of Thomas Hooker of Connecticut" shows that a significant proportion of his descendants had gone West by 1909. There was even one Geramn family in thata area who changed their name's spelling to Hooker upon arriveal from Germany in the mid-1800s! Some mid-west (IN, IL, OH) Hookers were from TN and were from Wm I 's NC/VA line (from Wilson Co.,TN) and some from the Smith Co.,TN line (who were from SC and ultimately from Granville Co., NC as Paul just posted). Even some from Robert Hooker, b c 1786 in NC/TN Hooker's line (of the 6 brothers), went into OH and IN from Henderson and hopkins Co.,KY!!! So there is no one answer to where they "came from" - one must look at the censuses at where the oldest known ones were born and trace back as we all are doing!!
