Please bear with me everyone as this post is a bit long. Pls delete if not interested. I have read and had people say that there are basically "three" Hooker family lines. First is Rev. Thos Hooker, second is Rev. Joseph Hooker whose family mainly went South, and then the "German" Hookers who came over before the Revolutionary War. (Which basically the other two "lines" did also). But is this really true? Does anyone have real proof that the Third line actually did come from Germany? I have been researching my Hookers, as most of you know, and have come to the conclusion that I are NOT from either of the Reverend's lines. So I must be from the "German". Here is what I have come up with as my Hooker lineage hypothetically until it is all sourced. I will start with my father at the top and go down to the oldest: James Russell Farrell 1925 -1980 born CA died CA Preston Nash Hooker/James Preston Farrell (chg'd his name) 1902-1946 George Graves Hooker 1872-1921 born IL died IN Stephen G. Hooker 1824-1901 born Brandon, VT died Chicago, IL Stephen Hooker 1787-1856 born Stow, MA died Brandon, VT Daniel Hooker 1750-1817 born Littleton, MA NOT Germany died Brandon, VT Jacob Hooker 1680 or 1691 - ? born in MA I have a list of Daniel's children that is in several places, so I know he had Stephen Hooker as a son. I am trying to find a list of children for Stephen Hooker who married Abigail Goss. Abigail was Stephen second wife. First was Anna Woodward. Stephen did have 2 young sons, Daniel and William, who both died in 1818, ages 2 & 3. States on their gravestone sons of Stephen and Abigail Hooker. They are buried in Brandon, VT. The oldest son might be the son of Anna as Stephen didn't marry Abigail until 1816 in Perrysburg, NY. In the federal census for 1830 for Brandon, VT it shows a Stephen Hooker, right age category, married and having 7 living children...5 girls and 2 boys. One of the boys is listed in the 5-10 age category and my Stephen G. Hooker would have been 6 in 1830. So that all fits. But, as we all know, those census records back then didn't give names. So I need to find a listing of names of his children to see if my Stephen G. Hooker is one of them. I want to thank anyone who has read this entire post and again thank you for your patience. If I can put this together it will be one of the "miracles" of genealogy research!! Especially not knowing about even being a Hooker 6 months ago and finding this whole side of the family. I appreciate any and all help, suggestions, advice. Linda Lathrop nee Farrell/Hooker

You're welcome, Charlotte. Just passing on info as others have done for me. I wouldn't be able to do this if I didn't have the help of some very nice and sweet ladies I have met online. One, in fact, is very probably my second cousin!! If I can help you or anyone else in any way you can email me privately at: lindalathrop@tds.net or linda.lathrop@yahoo.com Linda ---- CharlotteAnneMlr@aol.com wrote: ============= Thank you very much for this information. I really hate asking this as I know that any of you, like Dawn, that have these records had to pay to join; but, I spent all the extra money I had to get my Ancestry.com subscription thinking that would have all I needed. Boy, was I wrong. What I think will cinch this entire lineage search for me is the following: Does the NEGHS record show the children of Stephen Hooker and Abigail Goss Jones Hooker? I know of Wm and Daniel, the twins who died in 1818 and are buried in Brandon, VT. I found Stephen Hooker in the 1830 census for Brandon, VT as married and having 5 children...with one boy child in the age range that my Stephen G Hooker would have been in (age 6 born 1824) If anyone can find these children's names, I will owe you a big favor. I will be anxiously sitting/walking/getting up and down until I hear from someone. Thanks so very much to everyone. Linda M.Lathrop
Hope this can help others also. I found Mary Gates Hooker's info which I was looking for and several of her children. But Mary's birth and death years were "off" by 100 years each...obviously an easy to make typo. Linda Lathrop ************************* HOOKER, ABBIE H. nee Sweet b. 1858 d. 1939 Int. Row 22 Sec. Linda, Have you thought to see if your Hookers are listed on any 1925 state census records? This isn't going to help you with your early Hooker family but at least on the Iowa 1925 state census records you can find out the parents of the person. It gives the fathers name and the mother's maiden name also. Just a thought. Linda
I originally posted this and have heard from several people about it. "Stephen Gardner Hooker b.1824 in Poultney. He married Helen Nash Norton and they moved to IL where Stephen became a grain merchant. I believe that Stephen was the son of S.P. Hooker of Poultney. I am not sure what the S stands for but it could be Samuel. Stephen's mothers first name could have been Olivia." I thought Stephen Gardner Hooker was the son of Samuel Porous Hooker. But several different people who have him in their lineage have told me basically 2 different things. That he didn't have a son named Stephen and/or he had other children that no one knows the names of. I had found the name S.P. and Olivia in the LDS records which had been entered by unknown people. As we all know, the info that we often find is not always correct or the right info. After being told that Samuel Porous Hooker couldn't or very probably was not his father, I kept looking. I then found, and also had brought to my attention, the Stephen Shattuck Hooker whose mother was Eliza, a widow; older brother Silas and younger sister, Martha, who married a Baird, living in Goshen, VT. Martha Hooker Baird is very well documented on many family trees. I went through all census records and found Stephen Shattuck Hooker, still unmarried in his 60's, living with his sister, Martha Baird & her children. So by process of elimination, Stephen S. Hooker is not Stephen G. Hooker's father. Very, very probably Samuel Porous is not Stephen G. Hooker's father either. Samuel Porous had two groups of children from two wives. The names of his first 2 children are known but the second group are not, I am told. But he didn't marry his second wife until 1832 and my Stephen Gardner Hooker was born in 1824. So I am ruling out Stephen S. Hooker and Samuel Porous Hooker. In the meantime, I found through online searching the obituaries for Stephen G. Hooker and his wife, Helen Nash Norton Hooker in the Chicago Daily Tribune. Both stated burial in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, IL along with some of their children and grandchildren So I contacted the cemetery and sure enough, found Stephen G and his family buried there. I was able to get a copy of the burial card and other info including a letter written by Stephen G. Hooker's grandson, Jerome Beardsley Hooker, stating all of Stephen G. and Helen's children...ones dead and still alive at that time which was 1934. Their son, Edward C. Hooker, Jerome's father, had just died and was buried in Graceland. **The letter stated that George Graves Hooker, son of Stephen and Helen, had a son named Preston Nash Hooker, who disappeared a little less than 20 years before 1934 and had never been heard from again. This will tie in below in the descendancy listing.** So I started searching online on Ancestry. com and all the other genealogy sites including Rootsweb. Searched though online databases for IL state and much more. I was finally able to find out that we still had family alive that were descended directly from Stephen G Hooker, the same as I. I was able to find and talk to on the phone, a Robert Jerome Hooker, who was the son of Jerome Beardsley Hooker who died in 1966 and was also buried at Graceland in the family plot. We had a very long conversation in which he told me that Stephen G Hooker was born in Brandon, VT He gave me other info that he was aware of but said he couldn't remember who Stephen's parents were. But he said he had been told that we were descended from Rev. Thos Hooker. I also spoke with his 2 daughters, who are both right around my age (55). They were thrilled to hear from me and are going through all their old trunks where they know there are original letters, photos, etc. But most is very probably from the Beardsley family but hopefully some Hooker things will be there. Robert is now 78 years old, very healthy and very mentally fit. But he said that he and his wife and children moved to Southern CA back in the 1950's and didn't keep in touch with most of the other branches (cousins) that were Hookers. His great Aunts, Helen Hooker Moyer and Mercy Hooker, spinster, both lived into the 70's and were daughters of Edward C. Hooker and sisters of Jerome Beardsley Hooker. So, I know that Stephen G. Hooker was born in Brandon, VT in May of 1824. I kept searching and found a Stephen Hooker, age between 40 and 50, living in Brandon, VT in the 1830 Census. He had 2 sons and 4 daughters listed along with a wife but no names. One of the sons was in the age above 5 but less than 10 age range. Stephen Gardner Hooker would have been 6 years old in 1830. So the info that Jean M.from the Rutland, VT list sent to the Forum/list is very interesting to me: Old Town or Congregational cemetery in Brandon Hooker,Dan---[broken][DAR:Daniel]died 10-1-1818] Wm G. died 10-1-1818 in 3rd year.[Sons of Stephen Abigail] Hooker,Daniel, died 2-13-1817 age 67 and I am wondering if these children that died the same day, were MY Stephen G. Hooker's older brothers and that the Stephen and Abigail Hooker listed as the deceased children's parents could be the same Stephen Hooker and wife in the 1830 census record that shows 3 girls and 2 boys with one boy listed between ages 5 and 10. My Stephen would have been 6 year old. That fits. Also, could Daniel Hooker, listed deceased at age 67, be MY Stephen G. Hooker's grandfather. So, I am now looking and trying to find info about the Stephen and Abigail Hooker listed in Brandon, VT. Also Daniel Hooker. Here is the descendancy listing for Stephen Gardner and Helen, in case anyone is interested as I have gathered it for my little line. My lines have * in front of number since colors don't come through on the list. *1.Stephen G. Hooker m. Helen Nash Norton 2.Alice G. Hooker m. All the best, Linda M. Lathrop nee Farrell/Hooker

Hi Maureen, Wow, these Hooker men certainly got around, didn't they? My grandfather left the Navy in 1921 and his family in Chicago never heard from him again. He even changed his name. hmmm The one thing that stands out to me in what you wrote is the place the son lived in...Gardiner, ME My gggrandfather's middle name is supposed to be Gardner...Stephen Gardner Hooker. I haven't been able to find any families with that name in the New England/Chicago areas. Anyone know of any Gardner's connected with Hookers? Or maybe they named him after a town? Smiles, Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: Maureen Girard To: hooker@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2007 2:37 PM Subject: Re: [HOOKER] To Joyce and list Hi Linda-- I have a hunch, and this is all it is--nothing solid to back it up--but here goes. There was a Riverius Hooker bp. 22 Jan 1749 in CT, parents Dr. Daniel and Sarah Webster Hooker (my ancestors). Riverius married an unknown woman, then disappeared, leaving his wife and an infant daughter behind. There is no further information about the wife or daughter. The year he disappeared, a man by the same name appeared in Maine, claiming to have come from CT and that he was in the lumber business. This Riverius m. Mehitable Baker (b. 14 Feb 1755) of Litchfield ME in 1775 at Pownelboro (Wincasset) in Maine. They had a son named Riverius b. 8 Mar 1776. Riverius the First disappeared again, claiming that he had to go to CT, and at about the same time, a Riverius Hooker turned up in a New Hampshire regiment, where he served in the Rev War. The son of Riverius and Mehitable m. Huldah Maynard Cannon (b. 29 Apr 1781) at Litchfield ME, and the couple lived there and later at Gardiner ME. He was the father of 10 children, all b. between 1800 and 1826: Samuel, Riverius, Mehitable, Huldah Ann, Drusilla, Elbridge Gerry, Charles Clapp, Walton Olney, Delia Ann, Emma Jane. Riverius d. 30 Dec 1856, and Mehitable d. 28 Dec 1857. I wonder if there might have been more to this story. Given his record, it would not be surprising if Riverius the First had been responsible for more children than are recorded in the Hooker genealogy. Some of the names and locations you give are so typical of the New England Hookers that they could very well fit into that family somehow. Best of luck, Maureen
