Hi fellow researchers, I noticed that we have quieted down again after our roll call but we have had a few new people join the list in just the last week so I wanted to invite them to post a page about the family they are researching. I would also like to invite all of you to to post any interesting notes, wills, deeds or such that you have in your computers and can be easily cut and pasted into e-mail. If i get ambitious my self I may transcribe and post the early HOOKER wills I have from colonial NC. So far they are only on copy paper but I intend to get them into electronic TEXT soon. Remember all the posts get saved into the rootsweb mail archives and you can always got to this link RootsWeb Mailing Lists -- Interactive Search and search through the messages you may have missed if you joined the list late. It shook down the Prison, and many other Buildings, by which the Prisoners got at Liberty, and made off; among whom were many Jesuits, who were confined on Account of the late Conspiracy, some of which had been again taken and secured; and it was thought an Embargo would be laid on the Shipping, in order to prevent others from escaping: At St. Ubes (a flourishing Town, 21 Miles South of Lisbon) the Earthquake was more severe than any ever known, there, by which the Town was nearly destroyed, and many Lives lost, both there and at Lisbon, but as yet we have no Particulars, though a more circumstantial Account is hourly expected. We learn from Portsmouth, that last Week arrived there Captain Coodmin in the Brig Deborah from Saltertuda, who informs, that on his Passage from that Place, he was taken by a French Frigate, in Company with the Captain s Hooker and Guppy, both of Piscataqua, the Day after they parted with the Man of War who was their Convoy; the whole Fleet was in Sight when they were taken, but by Cover of the Night they got clear. Wesley: Here is a little more to help muddy the waters. From what I can make out so far, this is our John (Sr). I need to get into the Methodist archives I guess. In 1841, one hundred forty-five were recieved into the Methodist Church in the Orangeburg (South Carolina) Circuit, while thirty-one were expelled. At that time, four Sunday Schools had sixteen teachers, and eighty-eight scholars. The local preachers were John Wannamaker, Samuel Smoak, John S. Gray, L.J. Crum, and John Law. Exhorters were JOHN HOOKER, Samuel Inabinet, Calvin Hoger ( Horger), and Francis Baxter. Stewards and Leaders included George H. Pooser, D. R. Barton, Jacob Pooser, Lewis Zeigler, John Golson, M. H. Pooser, James Berry, John Fairy, Daniel Funchess, James Cox, E. T. Pooser, Peter Oliver, A. Whetstone, A. Inabinet,, W. Jeffcoat, John J. Salley, Thomas Tatem, Henry Moorer, Adam Holman and Lewis Rast. The Main Churches in the Circuit in that year (1841) were Asbury Chapel, Tabernacle, Wesley Chapel and Shady Grove. Asbury Chapel was built for and academy, later was used as a chapel. It was superseded by St. Pauls in St. Matthews. Regards, Al

Your Lyman Hooker is probably unrelated to the Lyman Hooker in Scott County, Illinois but it is curious. I am a descendant of Ira Allen Hooker of Scott County (thanks to the people on this Roots list who helped me confirm that) and he had a son Albinus who had a son named Lyman. Born 10/4/1845. And the family did have ties to Wisconsin. Was your Lyman from the area around Viroqua? I have a friend who has Hooker ancestors in that area. The Lyman surname was common in Connecticutt among associated families with the descendants of Thomas Hooker. Joan Hersey Olsson
