I am forwarding this response to the list for Jane (who unfortunately has her return address set wrong so rootsweb thinks she is not on the list but she is) Patrick In a message dated 99-01-07 18:17:11 EST, you write: << Subj: {not a subscriber} NC and Ga. Hookers Date: 99-01-07 18:17:11 EST From: [email protected]@icomnet.com (JANE PHILLIPSj) To: [email protected] Kyle, I was so glad to see your comments on Stephen and Samuel Hooker. I to, have come to the same conclusions as you. I still have some missing pieces. I surmised that James Hooker, brother of William II, was married to Zilpah Spruill of Tyrrell County. The will of Samuel Spruill Sr. dated 1760 names a daughter Zilpha Hooker, dec. and a granddaughter Elizabeth Hooker. Hooker family of Green County NC say Samuel had a sister named Elizabeth. William the II lived in Bertie County. Many of his deeds name places like Wiccacon Creek, Chinkpin Creek, Bear Swamp which was in Bertie County. In 1759, Bertie gave up part of it's land and that part became part of Herford County. Brothers John and Stephen had also married girls from Tyrrell County.(Bertie County had been formed from Bertie County in 1729) and they moved to Tyrrell County. James stayed in what had become Herford County probably on his father's land. Brothers William and Nathan moved to an area of Dobbs County that later became Green County. William married Laney Harper of Dobbs. Nathan married Ann Lackey of Edgecomb County. Through deduction Samuel must be the son of James Hooker. His children were: Zilpia-Could have been named after his maybe mother Zilphia Spruill Hooker Sarah-Could have been named after Grandmother Sarah Hooker Penelope Elizabeth-could have been named after his sister. William- could have been names after grandfather William Hooker James- could have been named after father James Hardy James Hooker could have named his son Samuel after his father in law Samuel Spruill. Enough for now. Anyone give me some feedback. Jane Gradeless Phillips in North Carolina >>
As a followup to my 2 messages of yesterday, I offer the following: Revolution War Records of Georgia, Vol 2, (l778-l785), p. 276: "At a meeting of the Executive Council held Oct. 22, l78l on petition of Mrs. Martha Hooker of the 29th Sept., with the report of the Commrs. of Burke County thereon,--Resolved--That the prayer of said petition be granted and as it appears since that time, that her husband NATHAN HOOKER is dead, it is therefore recommended to Commissioners of sequestered estates, to postpone the sale of the personal estate of the said NATHAN HOOKER until the meeting of the next General Assembly." I have been receiving messages related to the Hooker family for some time now, but am beginning to find it clogs my inbox at work more than is convenient. Could you please indicate how I may unsubscribe from the list quickly and efficiently. With Thanks Judy Hawes (nee Hooker)
Hi Folks, Now this is one I am not sure about in that all I find of her being a daughter of John READ/REED is on his will. John died in Henry County Missouri and came from Robertson County Tennessee. In his will he names his children he is leaving monies to them. Well instead of trying to explain it here is a little of it: ....then the property I hereby bequeath to her to revert to the following named persons (my children and grandchildren) Joseph T. Read, W.D. Read and the heirs of Betsy Ann Felts, Christian E. Hooker's heirs, and Malinda James heirs all of whom to have an equal portion the heirs as above specified to have three of the portions divided among them the other two portions to pervert to Joseph and Wm. D. Read and should either of the persons named died without issue then their portion to pervert to the remainder as above named..... Note that the ones that are mentioned I know to be his children. So as you see the above it reads as if it is his daughter. However I can not locate any Hooker in Robertson County Tennessee nor can I locate a marriage. From the Goodspeed's History of Robertson County Tennessee mentions one of John Read's children and it states that the family for awhile was living in Rutherford County Tennessee. Christian E HOOKER was my 2nd great grandaunt and I am interested to locate her and her descendants. I honestly don't know where she could be located as I wrote I have only located her on John's will. Perhaps this will be enough to go on to perhaps locate her family and descendants. I posted a message several hours ago regarding the Hookers of NC and GA and will attempt, once again, to refute some of the myths that have been circulated among researchers in recent years. Joyce, I appreciate your response but first I would ask you to take a deep breath and reread my earlier letter. I cited the original source which mentioned an alleged Martha Swain Hooker. Yes, there was a Martha Swain, daughter of John and Mary Swain, b. l7l8. She d. ca. l758, unmarried. Martha Swain had a sister, Rosanna, b. l735, who m. Stephen Hooker, son of William II. Stephen, as stated earlier, left a will in l766 which was probated in l767. He listed four children: Mary, John, Nathan, and Amelia. There was no Stephen and no Samuel. Now please tell me if you can find another Stephen Hooker of this same time period who could have been the father of a Stephen b. l769 and a Samuel, b. earlier than that. I can provide proof that the Martha Hooker, who was a widow in GA in l78l, was the widow of Nathan Hooker, not Stephen. Finally, I am absolutely shocked that some persons have identified the first three William Hookers as William B. Hooker, I, II, and III. Where did this come from??? I only know of two William B. Hookers. The first was my 3great grandfather, William Brinton Hooker (l800-l871) of Hillsborough Co., FL, and the other was a Wm. B. Hooker of Greene Co., NC, who appears on the l850 census of Greene. Kyle

I recently joined this mailing list and have been researching the archives of previous letters. I noticed several things that I wanted to attempt to clear up. There was no Stephen Hooker who d. in Burke Co., GA, in l78l. The source of this error was Folks Huxford's Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Vol. 4, pp. l44-l45. In his article on Stephen Hooker (l769-l833), who happens to be my 4great grandfather, Huxford incorrectly identifies Stephen as the son of Stephen and Martha Swain Hooker. First, there was no such person as Martha Swain Hooker. He was actually referring to Martha Jones Hooker, widow of Nathan Hooker. Nathan had moved to GA from NC, ca. l760 and was a son of William Hooker II and Sarah (Lassiter?) Hooker. Nathan was a brother of Stephen Hooker who d. ca. l767. Stephen married Rosanna Swain and had several children, but did not have a son named Stephen. Please note that this elder Stephen died 2 years prior to the birth of the younger Stephen. I should also note that this elder Stephen did not have a son named Samuel. I believe the Samuel Hooker, whose parentage is currently being discussed on this mailing list, was the son of James Hooker, another son of William Hooker II. After many years of research, I still have not identified to my satisfaction the father of my Stephen Hooker(l769-l833). Right now I am inclined to believe he was the son of William Hooker III of Dobbs Co. William III's son, Nathan Hooker and his wife Ann (Lackey) Hooker lived in Mongomery and Tattnall Co., GA, during the late l700s and early l800s, before moving to Mississippi. This Nathan has generally been referred to as a brother of my Stephen, who also lived in Montgomery and Tattnall Co., GA at the same time. However, I am open to the possibility that my Stephen (l769-l833), was the son of James Hooker who d. in Hertford Co., NC, in l778. Kyle VanLandingham

Kyle - Busy times, I might be slow but I'm steady. Am aware of the dispute regarding the information on the " Hooker Tombstone " at Hookerton. Per your last email I have a couple of questions. Have you seen a complete copy of Brainard's work and does it contain other usefull information? - How do you tie ZILPHA SPRUILL to JAMES HOOKER. I know that ZILPHA was the dau of SAMUEL SPRUILL of Tyrell Co. and that she was dead by 1760 according to SAMUEL'S will. I know that SAMUEL was born prior to 1766 because he was over 50 in the 1816 tax list of Greene Co. So this might fit together. - How do you tie SAMUEL to JAMES and ZILPHA - I have the children of WILLIAM III and MARY HEYMRICK as HEYMERICK, WILLIAM jR, NATHAN, but no STEPHEN. - I have notes from a source that I am checking that state " JAMES HOOKER son of WILLIAM II, had issue, died in Hertford Co., 1778, and that son SAMUEL was exec. of the estate " - I have a note that JAMES HOOKER was in the Hertford Co. tax list of 1770 so James must have been born 1749 or earlier, since WILLIAM II will was made 1757 this JAMES could be the son of WILLIAM II. - To further confuse the issue in a Bertie deed dated June 8, 1748 from HOLCUTT to BENJ. HOOKER, one of the witnesses was JAMES STEPHEN HOOKER. How are we suppose to fugure this out. - I do not have the children of JAMES HOOKER, however the will of SAMUEL SPRUILL mentions a grandaughter ELIZABETH, but no grandson Samuel. I have a fair amount of loose information which needs to be organized and as I am able to do so I will be happy to share. Please enlighten me as I struggle in the darkness. Your cuz, Hal Jordan
As you may know, Francis Terry Ingmire published several wonderful COUNTY RECORDS books over the years. I sent her a letter about one of her books - she did NOT respond but sent my letter to "her new publisher". The "publisher" sent me a catalogue. On the inside page they wrote "In the spring of 1998, Mountain Press acquired the properties of Ingmire Publications. We acquired the inventory and the rights to reprint nearly 95% of those materials. ...." They have the book that I want. They have 62 page catalogue. They have a variety of books that are of interest to a researcher who can NOT find a specific library book in their library and can NOT go to the specific county. For example: Scott Co. KY - Wills and Estates 1795 - 1822 or 1850 Hunt Co. TX Census or Cocke Co. TN Biographies (index of names). If you are interested in their address, it is Mountain Press P. O. Hello- I'm new to this list, been listening for a while. I'm looking for people interested in the HOOKER name in or near Hartfield, East Sussex, England in the 1700's and early 1800's. (For example, Leonard Hooker married Harriot Spencer Dec 6, 1799 in the Hartfield Parish Church.) I'd like to start a special interest group on this topic, however that's done; perhaps a dedicated web page. Would you contact me if you're interested? Tim Spencer ([email protected]) Nelson BC
Hi Everyone, I updated my web page with a hot link for Creighton University of Omaha Nebraska. Lyman Spencer Hooker had a Genetic defect for Colon Cancer. Most of his immediate family and their children have been effected. There is a test now available if you are in his direct lineage.
