I am researching my Grandfather, Henry Hooker of Beverly,Wentworth ,Ontario,Canada. He was born in 1861 and died in 1945. Does anyone have information on this branch of Hookers
Hi Friends: I've been on this list just about since it began and do appreciate it's existence and the willingness of folks to share information. Keep up the good work everyone! I am seeking information regarding Amon HOOKER. In 1830, Amon/Aman/Alman is found in Lewis, Essex Co, NY. In 1834, it appears that he purchased land in Brownstown Twp, Wayne Co, MI. He shows up in the 1850 Vermontville, Eaton Co, MI census at age 54. His birthplace is listed as VT (a Ralph HOOKER, age 58, also shows up in his household). This has been a brick wall and any help with this line would be appreciated (and I'd be glad to share). Thank you, Jill [email protected] Go Red Wings!
Hello, I am a descendant of James Hooker from North Carolina and Kentucky. I am moving to San Antonio, Texas, Thursday. So after I get settled, I will be back online and will try to get back to serious research. Thanks, Charlotte
Tim Spencer and the Hooler list I too would like to thank Patrick Anderson for his work on this list. I post some of my responces to both the individual I am replying to and to the list so that others researching the same or related lines, who may be interested, might share the information. I personally don't know anyone on the list, but appreciate being called an insider since I've only been at this for 3 years. Some of the people I correspond with have been at it for 30-40 years. I do know how hard it is to find others with the same lines, who are serious researchers, who doucment their work, who are willing to spend time digging, and who are not just interested in attaching themselves to a long list of " could be " possible relatives. I have had what I consider to be good success through my contacts with this list and hope to have more. Thanks to the others on the list who have helped me. Tim, if you have Hookers who have passed through eastern NC I would be happy to share information. Happy hunting Hal Jordan
Hello Cousins, The purpose of this list is to carry message traffic that supports HOOKER family genealogy in a manner that is acceptable to the members. This could include but is not limited to: 1. Queries about members of a HOOKER family requesting assistance or guiidance in connecting them to their family. 2. Queries about Publications and Sources that document HOOKER families. 3. Postings that provide a lineage of a HOOKER family and inquiring about connections. 4. Postings that discuss the accuracy or completness of a HOOKER family association (politely) 5. Postings that contain a will, deed or document that establish HOOKER family associations. I consider acceptable anything pertinent to HOOKER family genealogy. We have a small membership of about 50 members and are not really a very busy list so I have no desire to discourage message traffic as long as it sticks to the topic of HOOKER genealogy. However I do not view it my objective to badger you either into making posts so I prefer that you seldom hear from me. Let me take the opportunity to ask you to avoid posting poems, recipes and such or general genealogy information as there are many forums for that sort of thing and this is not the place. Also let me ask you that if you have questions or comments about the list, please shoot them at me first. That is why I have the tag lines on the messages set to put my address up periodically so you all know who to go to with questions. Just for your knowledge I also manage the ANDERSON, SANDUSKY, WETHINGTON, and TURRENTINE lists the reasons for which will be obvious if you visit my Home Page for PatAnder73 I receive a notification whenever anyone joins the list and I have been trying to notify them on that occasion to visit the Hooker Families web site so that they can review the notes there and catch up a bit with what information has been posted to the list. If I have missed anyone please take the opportunity to visit the site where you will see links to the addresses and families that 25 or so of our membership have posted. If you do not see a post for yourself there, send me a one page synopsis of the family you are working on and I will add you to the site. (I have a couple that I have not added yet) You will also see there a link to the message archives. RootsWeb Mailing Lists -- Interactive Search which will give you the opportunity to check all our prior messages. It is important that you realize that anything you post to the list is saved in those archives and can be searched on by people interested in HOOKER genealogy in the future. Therefore the list is a very good place to put transcripts or abstracts of documents that prove family associations. I am also in the throes of establishing a HOOKER querie board at GenConnect . This will be somewhat of a duplication of the GenForum message board but a degree improved. When available I will link to it from the website and post a message to the list. I would welcome any suggestions as to how the list could be better utilized and am always in search of additional links to add to the web page that are HOOKER family specific. Patrick Anderson
Re-Tim's message------ I've been on this list for less than a month so I doubt I could be considered an "insider." As far as I know, I've never personally met any of the persons on the list. First, I want to thank Patrick Anderson for operating this list and also the Hooker site. You are providing a great service to all of us with Hooker ancestors. In the brief time that I have been on the list I have communicated with some people who have been able to provide me with some information on my line. I also believe that I have been able to help several people on their lines. In addition, I have attempted, hopefully with some success, to correct some of the faulty assumptions that have been made in the past (and even now) regarding early family connections in the North Carolina and Georgia Hookers. So if we can help each other and also clarify the family record, then I think this list serves an excellent purpose. Kyle
I have enjoyed the postings since the inception. The interaction of the researchers is very refreshing. We do not always know each other, but this is an opportunity to share information on the surname HOOKER. I have no connection with the maintenance of this website but I always look forward to looking through the messages to see what information might help me in my research. KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK! Jack Hooker
Hello Listees! I'm a newcomer with a Hooker in the family tree who has been watching this list for a month or so now. I'm at a loss to figure out what this list is for. Can someone help me? So far it's just been a forum of communication between people who obviously know each other. The messages they post seem to be to individuals instead of to a list or researchers. Why is this being done on a list? What do I care if Kyle sends a message to Hal or vice versa? If they know each other's email address, why not send directly? What gives? I must be missing something here. I haven't seen anything remotely related to researching the HOOKER name except for insiders relating stuff I can't for the life of me figure out. Tim Spencer Nelson BC
Kyle - thanks for the snail-mail, I plan to send you a copy of SAMUEL'S will as soon as I can, I found a typed copy at the Lenior Co. Comm. College library last week with some material collected by Mrs. FC Hooker and a Mrs . Stanton. Unfortunately the will does not mention any brothers or land from fathers or his wife, who must have died previously. The Greene Co. Geneological Extracts book I mentioned did not have any mention of any STEPHEN HOOKER, but the author promices another volume. We'll see. Am presently looking through Dobbs and Hertford Records regarding JAMES and SAMUEL. One thing, Charles Holloman says JAMES d 1778 but JAMES is in a Hertford Co. tax list of 1779, will check maybe it's his estate. Will keep up the search, saw your post to genforum. Hal
Elma - I found a typed copy of SAMUEL HOOKER'S will at the Lenior Co. Community College geneology library, at Kinston NC. It was in with several items which had been donated by Raymond C Hooker, Jr., there were several researchers mentioned, Mrs. FC Hooker and a Mrs. JC Stanton, there was no mention of who included the copy of the will or where the original is now. There was a copy of Brainards letter to Mrs. Hooker and a series of hand written notes about the HOOKER family. The will mentions only four daughters, ZILPHA LANE wife of CULLEN, PENELOPE ABRAMS, ELIZABETH and ANN HOOKER. Also the will does not mention WILLIAM, who had died previously. So SARAH who had no children must have died previous to the will being drawn, and your sixth daughter who died previous are not included in the will. Since the Crooms seem to be reasonably well off, I noticed that they were owners of relatively large numbers of slaves in the 1790 cencus of Dobbs Co., I assume that Samuel saw no need to provide for them, or at least this copy of the will does not show them. The will was dated October 1, 1822 and filed at the February term of Court, Greene Co. NC, 1824 wittnessed by JAMES B and NATHAN HOOKER, with JAMES W HOOKER as executor. Sorry. The book " Swains of Nantuckett " by Robert H Swain states that ELIZABETH SWAIN dau. of STEPHEN and PATIENCE PARRIS SWAIN married JAMES HOOKER whose brothers JOHN and STEPHEN also married SWAIN girls, I have not yet persued verification of this fact, but will. If I can just get verification of SAMUEL'S administration of JAMES' estate in Hertford Co., in 1778, I've got it. You are correct about SAMUEL'S liniage, I believe I decend from Wm. d 1716, Wm. d 1756, James d. 1778, Samuel d 1823/24, Hardy d 1834, Anne E d 1861 who m Isaac Jordan. I remain on the lookout for information regarding your Crooms, its out there some- where. As I tie up loose ends regarding Samuel I'll let you know. Good luck. Hal

Joyce--Yes, there were four Williams in the direct line, if you accept that William Hooker who received the land grant in 1657 was the father of William who d. l7l7. I believe he was, based on the research done by Malcolm Hooker in his l976 book, as revised through l979. However, I have followed the traditional pattern among Hooker researchers of referring to William who d. l7l7, as William I. I have seen no evidence that any of the four Williams had B. for a middle initial. Kyle
Hal-Have you heard anything about a newly published or soon to be published book on Greene County? Is there a section on the Hooker family? I cringe to think of what may be included., perhaps the incorrect tombstone or something else? In response to your earlier letter, --- --In Malcolm Hooker's book, which is in the NCSL, he stated that his papers, including his copy of the l939 Brainard Hooker work would be placed in the Tennessee State Library. Malcolm died in Jan. l98l, according to his wife, whom I telephone called on March 7, l989. She wasn't too clear on what had happened to his papers. In late l990, I visited the Tennessee State Library in Nashville but was unable to locate any extensive collection of his. --I will be happy to send you the l938 Brainard Hooker letter. Please let me know your mailing address. I received the copy only recently from Harvey Hooker of Houston, TX. --I also have the Holloman genealogical report, which I also received from Harvey Hooker. I think it is pretty well done. This is where I saw the reference to the James Hooker estate, although I am sure I have seen the same reference somewhere else a few years back. One error I did notice in Holloman's work. He incorrectly identifies Stephen, son of Wm. II, as having a son named Francis. I think the Stephen who had a son named Francis was Stephen son of John and grandson of William II. --I have one letter from Robert H. Swain, dated Oct. l0, l986. His address was 65l0 Paleface Place, Charlotte, NC 28214. He did not provide any documentation as to the marriage of James Hooker and Zilpha Spruill. However, I have seen the same reference in Percy H. Hooker's work. I'll also send you a copy of Percy's chart if you would like it. --I am not aware of the name Virginia being used by the early Hookers. Kyle

This is in response to the letter from Jane Phillips. Jane, I'm glad we agree about Samuel being the son of James Hooker. However, I wanted to clear up another matter in your letter. You mention that two brothers, William Hooker married Laney Harper, and Nathan Hooker married Ann Lackey. Yes, they did, but your letter gives the impression that these two brothers were sons of William II. Actually, the William and Nathan you mention were sons of William III of Dobbs Co., NC. William Hooker II did have sons named William and Nathan. However, one of them was William III, who purportedly married one Mary Heymrick, and was the father of the William who married Laney Harper and also Nathan, who m. Ann Lackey. William III also had other children, including, Heymrick, Mary and James, and possibly a son named Stephen. Don, WE, I mean me - just started this HOOKER list in the middle of last year. we have 75 members or so, but they don't talk much. I created a supporting web site in hopes that people would take a look at it and get in to trading cousins with each other. see Hooker Families It is hard for me to tell whether to stimulate more activity or not becasue if I do then some people just jump off the list (as you saw) so I kind of just let it go along. I am hoping it will grow into a critical mass this year. I get notified about new members and we pick up about one a week. I tell them about the web page in hopes that they will find someone on it reseraching the same family. The newbies should be sure to post to the rest off us telling us which line they are working on. My problem is that I have tons of stuff back into the 1600's for all my father's family except the one little branch of Robert Hooker born 1784 in TN. That is one reason I decided to start this list to see if I could trip across someone who could connect me up. I have seen some promising discussion of the NC Hooker family. I know the other big Hooker family started in Connecticut. On my other lists that I manage (ANDERSON and SANDUSKY) I have lots of stuff to give other people and do it all the time, but for HOOKER i don't have a lot in my computer to stir up action of the list with it. if you have any ideas for good stuff to post to the list I am open to suggestions. I think good posts are things like the early wills and deeds that prove the connections in the early Hooker families. So if you have any of that kind of stuff on your computer feel free to post it.. All the posts to the list go into the list archives searchable at RootsWeb Mailing Lists -- Interactive Search and so nothing goes to waste someone else may find it useful later. It is always a pleasant surprise even to the people who think they know the details of their family to see a transcript of a document that provides the proof they should have on file. I have some of the early carolina wills on the web page. Patrick Anderson (grandson of Amy Hooker) list manager Home Page for PatAnder73
