3. Gerald--All I have on the kidnapping incident of young John Hooker was found in "State Records of North Carolina," Vol. 20, pp. l48, l53, 201, 332, 376, 382-83. On p. 376, dated Dec. 6, l787, it says" "The Committee on Propositions and Grievances to whom the Petition of Jonathan Hooker, reports that in the year l769 John Hooker, brother of the Petitioner, an infant of Twelve years old, was seduced and carried off to the Mosquito Shore in New Spain in America by a certain Abram Jennett; that the said Jonathan Hooker, next of kin and Heir apparent to the said John Hooker, who by devise was possessed of l80 acres of land in the county of Tyrrell in fee simple, that the Commissioner of Confiscated Estates for the District of Edenton, on the --day of ----, 78-, under and by virtue of the Law commonly called Confiscation Laws, exposed and sold the aforesaid Land at Public Vendue; the said NATHAN HOOKER became the purchaser as he believed in justice the land was not confiscated, and that the General Assembly could remove the Grievance..." The peitioner is referred to as Nathan or Jonathan in these records. But is was Nathan. The petition was presented by B. Spruill, who m. Rosanna (Swain) Hooker, after the death of her first husband, Stephen, in l767. Also, Stephen's l766 will listed two sons, John and Nathan. In the will, John did receive, "by devise," certain lands that Stephen had earlier purchased. Rosanna (Swain) Hooker Spruill had a brother, James Swain, who m. Ann Jennett, dau. of Abraham/Abram Jennett. Kyle

    3. Kyle- Would you be kind enough to discuss any further detail available about the John Hooker (brother of Nathan) kidnapped about 1767. The reason is the following. In the 1790 Census of South Carolina's Orangeburgh District there was enumerated a John Hooker. He was later enumerated in each of the Censuses in this district through 1840 except the 1830 Census when he appears to have resided in the household of William Hooker, my Greatgrandfather. From these data and a Revolutionary War Pension application we have estimated his birth at about 1760. We have been unable to further trace John's ancestry. The information you provide offers an interesting possibility. I would appreciate any light you can shed on this mystery. Gerald J. 3. Jane-In l787, Nathan Hooker (son of Stephen, who d. ca l767), petitioned the NC General Assembly regarding some land of his brother, John, who at the age of l2, in l769, was kidnapped and carried off to "New Spain in America." The Nathan and John mentioned here were sons of Stephen Hooker, who left the will in l766, Tyrrell Co., NC. The petition and additional documents can be found in "State Records of North Carolina," Vol. 20, as cited in my previous message. Now I know that Nathan is also referred to as Jonathan in the records, which complicates the matter, but the memorial was presented by his stepfather, Benjamin Spruill. And interestingly, the seductor of young l2 year old John was Abram Jennett, whose daughter Ann m. James Swain, the sister of Rosanna Swain who first married Stephen Hooker, and then Benjamin Spruill. At any rate, this has led me to believe that young John, b. l757, son of Stephen, left the scene rather early and could not be the John who left the will in Tyrrell Co., in l790. As to the Stephen, Jr., who appears on Tyrrell Co., deeds in the l760s, I have assumed he was the son of John, who m. Elizabeth M. Swain. Stephen, who left the will in l766, did not list a son named Stephen. Also, the term Jr., does not necessarily indicate that the person who signed his name as Jr., is a son of a person by the same name. Stephen Hooker, Jr., may be junior to his uncle Stephen Hooker. There is precedent for this during the colonial time period. These are suppositions that I have made and I welcome you comments. Kyle

I did see the list of sources and thanks so much. You are really good. I have not had time to really study over it but will get to it soon. I have decided that the John Hooker will dated 1790 is not the son of William II but the son of Stephen Hooker will 1766. Reread the wills of all these people and then think about the age they must have been and the time periods involved. Let me know what you think. I know that Stephen Hooker will 1766 does not name a son Stephen. However I have seen the name Stephen Jr. On records of that time period. 1763 Stephen Hooker Jr. and John Hooker are named as surveyors on a patent to John Talkington in Tyrrell County. Source: The Granville District of NC 1748-1763 Vol. II Compiled by Margaret Hoffman 1765 Stephen Hooker Jr. listed as grantee on a deed in Tyrrell County. Source: Deed Book 4 page 37 1768 Stephen Hooker listed as a juror at an inquest in Tyrrell. (Note Stephen's will is date 1766). Source:N.C.G.S. Journal Vol. 1 No. 1 Jan. 1975 What do you make of this? My guest on your Stephen is that he is the son of John (will 1790). Then again the theory on James being the Father of Stephen adds up. 3. Anne-Just read your Hooker marriages from AL, GA, and SC. I noticed you had included the marriage of my 3great-grandfather Capt. Wm. B. Hooker to Mary A. (Hair), in l830 as from the "Southern Christian Advocate." Your message gives the impression that this was a South Carolina marriage. However, Wm. B. Hooker and Mary A. Hair were married in Hamilton Co., Florida, in l830. The "Southern Christian Advocate" was a Methodist publication which included news about Methodists throughout the states of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida ( and possibly other Southern states). So simply because a marriage or obituary is cited from the "Southern Christian Advocate" does not and should not imply that the event occurred in South Carolina. 3. Hal--I just received some Hooker material from a cousin in Florida. In includes the following: >From "North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal," Vol. xx, no. 4, Nov. l994. p. 270 Tax List of Hertford County, NC, l779 Orphans of James Hooker, deceased 3 slaves, valued at 2l00 pounds money and notes, valued at 200 pounds Total--2300 pounds. Notice the term "orphans." We know the son Samuel was executor and therefore an adult. So this indicates at least 2 minor children. Kyle

    2. Hi, As I told you in my last message I was signing us up with GenConnect to create a Query Board for the Hooker family. The board is now created open for business and linked to the web page I created for us. Hooker Queries Message Index The advantage to this board is that it is integrated with all the other message boards at genconect and if you enter all the surnames that are associated in your message it wiill appear on all the existing correlated boards. By the way, the graphics on my Hooker Families is something I just cobbled together quickly the night I put the page together. If any of you out there are graphic artists and want to take a crack at a superior contribution I am open to changing it. Just send me a graphic say 200 x 500 Patrick
