Help! I have posted once before but to no avail. I read every post in hopes of connecting to someone out there. Here is my family information: Samuel Hooker, born in 1797 in Maryland, parents unknown, marries a SARAH SHULL in OHIO, sometime aroun 1826-28. They have 9 children, Martha, Orpha, Samuel (my grandfather), Sarah C., Lusetta, Mary S. Louisa M., Rachael E. and John, all born between 1828-1849. My SAMUEL HOOKER marries a Maranda Lydy in 1854, and he fights in the Civil War out of OHIO. Maranda dies in Oct. 1865, Samuel never remarries. They had 4 sons, Henry 1855, William 1858, Horace 1859, and Jesse (mine) 1862. Samuel dies in 1908 in Washington Courthouse, Ohio. JESSE HOOKER marries a EMMA WIGGINTON in 1883 and they have 2 daughters, maybe more, but I doubt it. Margaret 1885 (mine) and Miranda 1887. Jesse dies in 1895, Emma dies in 1907, in Ohio. MARGARET HOOKER married GEORGE EDWIN CRABLE in 1903 and they had what we believe to be 4 children 3 daughters and 1 son, my grandfather, RICHARD HOOKER CRABLE in 1905. Can anyone out there connect to me? We have many brickwalls with this name and would love to find out more. I am willing to share anything that I have with you. Thank you in advance, and I hope to talk to you soon, Karen Clemente
Cousin Ruth, You are right. It is Elizabeth Mary. I knew better. What do you think about the 1700 Hookers? Will catch you on e-mail. Jane
Kyle, This new information you have found opens some other doors. Stephen (will 1766) had a daughter named Amelia Ann. I have no record as to who she married or when she died. She is not to be confused with Amelia Ann, daughter of Nathan ( will 1801). I definately rule her out as Sheriff John's wife. I will see what I can find next time at the library. When did Nathan go to Ga? Maybe Ann was his first wife. Maybe Stephen Jr. was his son. Maybe Stephen Jr. was married to Ann. You said people of that time period would refer sometime to a nephew with the same name as Jr. It stands to reason that Stephen Jr. would buy land next to his wife's family. At this point supposition is all we have. I found the mention of the Bateman name most interesting as my gggrandfather William Hooker married a Mary "Polly" Bateman in 1816. Have not been able to prove who her parents were. I found the name of Mary Hooker on a list of Tyrrell County Estate Records. She is listed as deceased 1786. Also the name of John Hooker deceased in 1788. Check this out on the Tyrrell County Web Site. Jane
Jane, I just wanted to let you and Kyle know that the wife of John Hooker was named Elizabeth Mary Swain and not Mary Elizabeth. I have the book by Robert H. Swain 'SWAINS of NANTUCKET Tails and Trails". Keep up the good work. Ruth
Jane--There is a will in Tyrrell Co., NC for one Isaac Alexander, dated Oct. 28, l777. He mentions sons Joseph, Anthony, John, and Joshua. Daughters--Mary Norman, Ann Hooker, and Sarah Alexander. The reference to Ann Hooker reads "to the heirs of my daughter Ann Hooker, deceased one ewe to be divided among them" Witnesses-John Bateman and Jesse Bateman. Executors, sons John and Joshua Alexander. Also, there is a deed in Tyrrell Co., Book 4, pt. 2, p. 37, Nathan Bateman, Sr., to Stephen Hooker, Jr., Dec. l3, l765. l5 pounds. 50 acres on west side of Scuppernong river, joining Tarr Landing, Isaac Alexander. Witnesses: John Hooker, Nancy Bateman, Anne Hooker. Do you think this Anne Alexander Hooker could be the second wife of Sheriff John Hooker? She was dead by l777, so she couldn't be the same Ann who is listed as the wife of John Hooker in the l790 Tyrrell Co. will. Sheriff John's first wife, Elizabeth Mary Swain, was reportedly deceased by Aug. l765, according to the Swain genealogy. Kyle
Hi! I've been sitting on the sidelines for awhile so I thought it was time I made a post. I am looking for the parents of Jeremiah Hooker b. 29 Mar 1810, South Carolina (possibly North Carolina) d. 14 Feb 1893, Browning, Missouri (Sullivan County), Age: 82 bur. Hooker Cemetery (Browning, Missouri [Linn County]) occ. Farmer & Teacher. Jeremiah was married to Mary Brookshire b. 20 Aug 1810, North Carolina d. 20 May 1888, Linn County, Missouri, Age: 77 bur. Hooker Cemetery (Browning, Missouri [Linn County]). Jeremiah moved to Linn County Missouri around 1835 from Tennessee. I have located a will (25 Februrary 1829) of a William Fowler from Rutherford County, Tennesse. He left his grandson, Jeremiah Hooker property. His only daughter was A. J.? Fowler. I am ASSUMING that she married Jeremiah's father, Unknown Hooker. Jeremiah Hooker and his wife Mary Brookshire had 11 children. Elizabeth Jane "Jane" Hooker, William Hooker, John Beckett Hooker, Julia Ann Hooker, Ruth Ann Hooker, James Thomas Hooker, Amanda F. Hooker, Enoch M. Hooker, Mary Hooker, Martha Ann Hooker, & Rachel Hooker. I have a lot of information (and pcitures) from Jeremiah Hooker forward to present day on my web site at: http://www2.misnet.com/~dhooker/WC_TOC.htm Any names sound familiar? David J. Hooker
Diane, I'm sorry I do not know any Daniels connected to the Hookers. However, I still have much reseach to do. If your husband is a Hooker or related to the Hookers from North Carolina he is more than likely cousin to many people posting on this site. Could you give me some names, dates and locations? Jane Phillips
Kyle, Thanks for the information. I would love to have a copy of the Percy Hooker Chart and Charles Holloman Report. My address is 1603 West Rd. Kinston, N. C. 28501. The Elizabeth Phillips that was married to Hymrick Hooker is in my line of Phillips. Jane G. Phillips
Hal, Thanks for the info. Keep me posted on what you find on this line. I come from the Hookers of Craven and Beaufort County. They came out of Tyrrell County about 1857. I am either descended from Sheriff John Hooker or his brother Stephen Hooker, sons of William II. About 1870 (not sure of the year) a Dr. Rosco Hooker from Greene County moved to Aurora,NC in Beaufort County. His family later married into one of my other lines. I want to research as many Hookers as I can that come from Eastern North Carolina. Jane
Jane--The late Percy H. Hooker of Durham, NC, was a direct descendant of William Hooker III, through his son Heymrick Hooker. I have a copy of a chart which he prepared which shows the line from William I down to Percy. Percy was not certain who William III married. He included in parentheses Mary Heymrick, but adds a question mark. Percy lists the following children of William III.--- l. Heymrick, I, m. lst-Elizabeth Phillips; 2nd-Sallie Lassiter. 2. Mary, m. -----------Pope. 3. William IV, m. Laney Harper. 4. Nathan. 5. James--Percy adds "William Hooker III probably had a son by this name." In the next generation Percy has--- Heymrick Hooker, m. lst-Elizabeth Phillips; 2nd-Sallie Lassiter Children: lst marriage: l. John, b. l780; d. Sept. ll, l8ll, never married. 2. William, b. ca. l783; d. ca. l842. 3. Heymrick, Jr., b. l787; d. July 2l, l822, never married. 4. Thomas, b. Feb. l2, l789; Oct. 2, l846. 5. Nathan, b. Dec. l5, l793; d. Jan. 5, l848, m. Julia Ann Wright. This Nathan is Percy Hooker's line. 2nd marriage: 6. Mary, m. John Rogers Thomas, l8l4. Jane, I'll be happy to send you a complete copy of Percy's chart. Just send me your mailing address. You will note that Percy does not list a wife for Nathan, son of William III, but we know, from other research, that Nathan's wife was Ann Lackey. I also have a copy of a genealogical report prepared by a Charles Holloman in l98l. The report was prepared for a descendant of Nathan and Ann (Lackey) Hooker. Holloman establishes the connection from William III to Nathan. This Nathan moved to GA in the l790s and later to Mississippi. Holloman also brings up an interesting point. He discounts the story that William III's wife was a ------------Heymrick. He cites the will and estate papers of Heymrick Hooker, I's father-in-law, John Phillips, Sr. In these papers, Phillips' apparently refers to his son-in-law, Heymrick as Ahimerlick or Ahimerick. Holloman states that the name Hymerick "was unique with the first Hymerick who was son of William Hooker III." I'll also be happy to send you a copy of the Holloman report. Looking for any information concerning the connection between the Purdy family and the Hookers. Thanks, Toby
Jane - am currently working to try and place all Greene Co. HOOKERS. I have THOMAS HOLLIDAY HOOKER son of HEYMERICK HOOKER and ELIZABETH PHILLIPS. THOMAS b abt. 1789 and d before 1850. Wife SARAH TURNAGE. THOMAS listed in the 1816 Greene Co. tax list with property and slaves, is 26-45 in the 1820 Greene Co. ceucus, 40-50 in the 1830 Greene Co. cencus, 50-60 in the 1840 Greene Co. cencus, and died before the 1850 Cencus. He was by himself in the 1820 cencus, had young sons and an adult male with him in the 1830 cencus and what appears to be a wife in the 1840 cencus, so he apparently was married after 1820, lost his wife who bore sons, by 1830, re- married 1830-1834 to SARAH. In the 1850 cencus SARAH HOOKER-45 is listed with two sons TRAVIS-19, WILLIAM F. 15 and a dau SARAH-17. In a deed rerecorded 14 Feb. 1885 deed book 8, page 568 it follows: " 13 Jan., 1860 Wm. Frank Hooker to Travis E. Hooker. $9,000. ______ acres on Rainbow Swamp which my father Thomas Hooker bequeathed to me in his last will and testament adj. Benj. Canady, Henry Grainger, James Browne, decd., M P Powell decd., reserving the life estate of my mother Sarah Hooker except 6 acres already sold Henry Grainger in the fork of the public roads on Fox Grape branch. wit: J H Albritton, J T Freeman signed: Wm. Frank Hooker 14 Feb. 1860 E W Best, Clk. 14 Feb. 1885 Jno. C. Dixon, Reg. " I believe that Heymerick son of Heymerick married a Martha and died after 1820 as he doesn't appear in the 1830 cencus. Martha appears in this cencus and her age and station appear in line with that of the wife of Heymerick II. Am still working on HEYMERICK, WILLIAM AND JOHN. Don't know if the WILLIAM in the 1820 Greene Co., cencus is the son of Heymerick I but it would appear so. I have a note that he died in 1842, but he is not listed in the 1830 Greene Co. cencus so he moved or died. Will pass along more details as I get them. Which line do you decend from. I am SAMUEL C>HARDY>ANN E m ISSAC JORDAN Hope this helps. Hal Jordan
OK third times a charm! J D Hooker's Bio for 1891 list his fathers dates as born 1810 and died March 1874. J D Hooker's Bio for 1882 list his fathers dates as born 1810 and died March 1874. A R Hooker's Bio for 1882 list his fathers dates as born Nov. 4, 1809 and died March 4, 1873. Anne,
Hi Phil and the Hooker List: I found a little blurb of a Pottawattamie County Bio on a NE/KS site. It was for J D Hooker in 1891 Macedonia Township Pottawattamie County Iowa. I check the book that this bio came from and there was a whole page on him. J D Hooker was also listed in the 1882 Pott county Bio's with a brother A R Hooker. The Bio in 1891 stated that JD was related to General Fighting Joe Hooker. J D and A R Hooker's parents were M H Hooker and Nancy Palmeter both of New York. JD was born in Chautauqua County New York July 10, 1837 according to the 1891 Bio The family was of English ancestry, and desendants of two brothers, who where among the early emigrants of to the northeastern States. the parents reared a family of ten children. The fathere was born in 1810, and came to Iowa , settling in Delaware County in 1854. He lived there until his death which took place in March 1874. Myron Hooker born July 10,1837 died March 1837. JD Hooker worked in a saw-mill in Pennsylvania, having been brought up in the lumber regions of southern New York. He came to Iowa in the spring of 1855. He remained here for 5 years then bought a farm in Delaware County, Iowa which he sold in 1869. He then began Veterinary studies. He moved to Webster County, south of Fort Dodge, where he live for two year, and in May 1871, first came to Pott county. He was married in Delaware County Iowa July 10 1861 to Miss T J Wilson. J. D. and T J Hooker had nine children: J. M. Hooker, C. M. Hooker, Edward D. Hooker, James D. Hooker, Jenny L. Hooker, Lewis J. Hooker, Shockey E. Hooker, Jennie E. Hooker and Frederick S. Hooker. They lost one child Leander Vern when he was 2 1/2 years old. 1882 The 1882 Bio on J D Hooker says about the same info, except that J D's father was unfornate in the lumber business, losing his property, with the exception of that in Delaware County, which he had purchased before engaging in the lumber trade. While in Cincinnati Ohio, he recieved an injury by a fall, from which he never fully recovered. A R Hooker Was born May 1 1851 in Gerry, Chautauqua County NY , his father was , Myron Hooker born Nov 4, 1809 in Allegany County NY. Came to Delaware County Iowa in 1856, where he died March 4, 1873. His mother Nancy Palmeter was born March 19 , 1816 in Farmington, Ontario County NY. She lives with our subject, and is the mother of ten children, four of whom are dead. A R Hooker married Nov 23, 1878 at Watson MO to Lizzie M. Folts. She was born in Oneida County NY Mr and Mrs Hooker have two children Emma L. Hooker and Crete Hooker. J D Hooker stands for James Dewey Hooker. The Bio stated they were related to "Fighting General Joe Hooker", so I thought since he is in my line and JD and AR Hooker are in my neck of the woods that I would check it out. I have been to Carson Cemertery before. There are alot of Hooker's there. I was there about a year ago and didn't find any connection to my line at the time. Looks like maybe there might be one. Does anyone have any information on the above Hooker's that may fit into your lines, maybe when the Bio information was taken they were going on an old family story of the general. Jane----I think you are right and it looks like this younger Abraham Jennett is the son of the elder Abraham whom I mentioned in my earlier messages. The Swain genealogy by Robert H. Swain, p. 60, refers to that elder Abraham Jennett, whose daughter Ann, m. James Swain in l750. This James Swain was the brother of Rosanna Swain who m. Stephen Hooker.
