Jane - any day the first whole week in April would be great for me for a meeting in Kinston. I certainly could do other dates to accommodate. Just need a few weeks notice. Have never attended a meeting like this, should we set some ground rules or agenda for productivity sake, I don't know. I have Percy Hooker's chart, I got it from Kyle. Will work with you on dates just let me know. Hal Jordan
Hi Anne, No specific informatin off the top of my head but, if I recall correctly from my research of the Connecticut Hookers, there were some ties to the Whitmans. I just checked the copy I have of the index to the Hooker genealogy. There was a Sarah Whitman. Joan Olsson
Hi, I found a book "Pioneers of Polk County, Iowa" Published in 1908. Colonel Edward Foster Mills Hooker, descendant of an English family, entitled by Royal decree to wear the heraldic arms of Thomas Hart Hooker, founder of the city of Hartford, Connecticut, and cousin of the famous General, Joe Hooker. Does any one have any ideas on this Colonel Hooker or a family tie to his lineage. The article does have a picture. It does not mention a wife. Thanks Anne Ryan http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ridge/3441/ [email protected] [email protected] I found a DAR reference for Edmund Foster Mills Hooker wife Sarah Penegree. Parents Thomas Hart Hooker Jr. and Betsey Mills. Grand Parents Thomas Hart Hooker and Sarah Whitman. I still have not found yet any evidence as to how he was a cousin of the famous General Joe Hooker. Still looking for any idea's! Kyle, Just read your post from Sunday about Rosco. Thanks! It helped fill in some missing pieces. Dr. Rosco was the first doctor in Craven County to specilize. He was an ob-gyn but I think he later practice general medicine. Received your mail yesterday. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort. Holloman's research is most interesting. With the Percy Hooker chart , I now have more names to add to my FTM. Jane
Hal, I have talked to the people at Heritage Place at LCC about having a Hooker Meeting. They said to let them know when we want to meet and they will reserve the conference room for us. Just let me know when you might come this way again and I will try to arrange my schedule. I know of serval people that want to join us. Anyone that wants to get together with us just let us know. Eliza Jane was Dr. Roscoe Hooker's first wife. they were only married a short while when she died. He later remarried and had 5 or 6 children. He is buried at Aurora. Jane
Hi Nadine, Welcome to the Hooker rootsweb site. Some of us are working on the some of the same lines that you are. Your ancestors went to Green County and mine went to Craven and Beaufort Counties. However I am trying to get as much as I can on all the Hookers of Eastern NC. Jane Gradeless Phillips

Jane--I was just rereading the Percy Hooker chart. I sent your copy either Thursday or Friday so hopefully you should receive it by tomorrow. Percy Hooker's grandfather was Erasmus Allen Roscoe Hooker, b. b. Aug. l4, l829, d. Feb. l6, l879. His first wife was Eliza Jane Pope, who d. June 30, l852. He then m. Sallie Alston Montague in l853 and had 9 children. Erasmus Allen Roscoe Hooker was the son of Nathan Hooker and Julia A. Wright Hooker, and the grandson of Heymrick Hooker, Sr. Kyle
Nadine--Welcome to the list. I'm glad you took my advice and joined. I think we're making great progress here in untangling the eastern NC Hookers. I certainly would like a meeting of those researching Hookers even if its just the two of us. I have always found the folks at the Heritage Center most accommodating. I will check at the Archives in Raleigh for the will, but have never found it listed anywhere. Perhaps the lists are outdated and the will was deposited in the recent past. There may be a Hooker living in the area who would be helpful, perhaps the people at the Heritage Place would know of someone? I saw a cemetary record last week concerning Roscoe Hooker's wife, From the Edward's- Hooker Graveyard " Hooker. Eliza Jane, wife of Roscoe Hooker A M M D, who was born 23rd of March 1834 and died the 30th of Jun. 1852 " this is the only reference I have found in my records concerning the Roscoe Hooker you mentioned in a previous post. Perhaps she was an Edwards. Hal Jordan --part0_918418493_boundary--

Hello everyone, I was invited, as a new subscriber to this list, to introduce my line of Hookers. So here goes a brief summary. William and Bridget Hooker (NC) ca 1670-1717 William II William III Hymerick/Heymrick William and Rebecca Woolaston daughter Rebecca Hooker married George W. Freeman, daughter Rebecca Jane Freeman married Harve Hardin Haines. His son James Wesley Haines was my mother's father. Hope to hear from some of you. I have very little information as I have been concentrating the last few years on my Daddy's family, the Newhouses. Nadine in California
Kyle, I am still trying to assimilate all this information. I have seen most of what you have referred to but not all at one time. I also spent a good part of a day in a library on Thursday. looking at some of the same information to which you refer. I was looking at microfiche of Tyrrell County Court Minutes. Just to stir the pot I'm going to throw in a few more tibits about John Sedgix. The writing of the minutes was realy hard to read. The following is the best I could interpret them. 1760-Personally appeared Abraham Jennett, son of Abraham Jennett deceased, and of his on free will , being about the age of 15. ? John Sedgix guardian of his person and estate.Joseph Alexander and Jerimiah Wynn. surties in the sum of 5000? pounds ? money. John Sedgix is appointed guardian of Sarah Jennett, orphan of Abraham Jennett deceased. Order that the John Sedgix give 500 pounds security with two good securities and enter Joseph Alexander, Esq. and Jerimirah Wynn. 1761-A motion of E. Gordon, John Sedgix is appointed guardian to Elizabeth Jennett orphan of Abraham Jennett. Stephen Hooker and Jerimiah Wynn securities in the sum of 50 pounds. In your notes you state that John Sedgix's wife's name was Ann. Both Abrahams were married to Anns. The older Ann married Sedgix after the death of her first husband A. Jennett. This is why he was made guardian to her children (supposition). At age 22 Abraham Jr. marries Mary HooKer, daughter of Stephen Hooker Will 1766. Stephen's son, Nathan marries Mary Sedgix Williams Whebee, daughter of John Sedgix. The mention of a Ann Hooker puzzles me. Who was she? I don't believe she was Nathan's 2nd wife but not closed to that possibility. Nathan's will dated 1801 names wife Elizabeth. Her will dated 1832 refers to all of the children named in Nathan's will as my son or my daughter. Stephen Richard is not mentioned as he died in 1810. I was puzzled about the Spruill connection. But you must be right about Benjamin being the half brother and that is why he is named. Have I got this straight? It really gets confusing. Let me know what you think. Will touch on more later. Jane Phillips
Hal, I have seen the name Raymond Hooker and have ask around but no one I have talked to knwos how I could get in touch with him. He may not even be living. I will continue to try to find someone that can tell me something about the man. I have seen the work on the Hookers at Heritage place. I'm sure that you discovered jast as I did that some of the information is wrong. I assume that the original of Samuel's will is in the state acheives in Raleigh. If you live in the Kinston area lets have a Hooker conference at Heritage Place. Jane Phillips

Hi Cousins, In case somebody missed this I have received permission to forward it to the list. Darrel and I are distant Cousins. We descend from a pair of brothers born in TN/NC who in their early 20's bought a lot in Madisonville, Ky in 1807, I from Robert and he from George. Neither of us has been able to prove their father yet, but we suspect a NC or VA parentage. We have been exchanging notes for some years and I knew he was working on this census project for sometime and I am delighted to hear he has made enough progress that he is willing to do lookups. We hope to link this data up to the web page Hooker Families someday. I am sure that Darrell would agree with me that if any of you Carolina Hookers can find our brothers father that would be fair trade. Patrick Anderson (list manager) In a message dated 99-02-04 20:56:15 EST, you write: << Subj: Hooker Census Extractions Date: 99-02-04 20:56:15 EST From: [email protected] (Darrell Hooker) Reply-to: [email protected] To: [email protected] CC: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] The HOOKER family census extraction project continues even though professional obligations have necessarily interrupted it from time to time. It is my desire to make all the information available to HOOKER researchers in a searchable database on the internet but it will likely be some time before that becomes a reality. In the meantime, I will be more than happy to search for individuals or families bearing the HOOKER surname by request. Please be as specific as possible, perhaps supplying me with approximate ages at a given time. Parents' or siblings' names might be helpful, for example, keeping in mind however that prior to 1850, only heads of household are listed by name. The current phase of this project involves extracting HOOKER families in every state from census records of 1790 - 1870. Obviously, many states were admitted to the Union at dates much later than 1790 and, except for a few of the territorial censuses, records do not exist prior to dates of admission. The second phase of the project will be to extract the families from the 1880 census records. It is expected this phase will require as much or more time as the entire first phase. The 1880 census has been Soundexed, but only families containing children of age 10 and under are included in the Soundex, along with lone individuals of all ages. Census extractions of HOOKER heads of household (1790-1840) and HOOKER families (1850 and later) are complete for the following: [Southern States - Project complete] AL 1820-1870 AR 1850-1870 DE 1870 FL 1850-1870 GA 1820-1870 KY 1810-1870 LA 1850-1870 MD 1790-1870 MS 1820-1870 MO 1850-1870 NC 1790-1870 SC 1790-1870 TN 1820-1870 VA 1810-1870 WV 1860-1870 [Western States - Project complete] AZ 1860, 1867, 1870 CA 1850-1870 CO 1870 ID 1870-1880 MT 1870-1880 NV 1870 NM 1860-1870 OR 1850-1880 TX 1850-1870 UT 1856, 1870-1880 WA 1870-1880 WY 1880 [Mid-Western States] DAK TER 1880 IA1850-1870 IL 1820-1860 IN 1807,1820-1860 KS 1860-1870 MN 1860-1870 NE 1870 WI 1840-1870 [New England/Eastern States] CT 1790-1850 MI 1850 NY 1790-1850 PA 1790-1850 RI 1860 VT 1790, 1800, 1830 Darrell R. Jane----In your last message, Feb. l, you mentioned the Tyrrell Co. website and referred to the Estate Records, John Hooker and Mary Hooker. I went to the website and found this most interesting. Today, I went to the San Antonio Library and found the book--"Tyrrell County North Carolina Estate Records l734-l800," abstracted by Dr. Stephen E. Bradley, Jr. Sure enough, on p. 25 I found the following:-- "l95. HOOKER, JOHN Apr Ct. l788. Bond for Nathan Hooker to administer estate of John Hooker "suggested to be dead." Bondsmen: John Warrington, Hezekiah Spruill. l789. Heirs of John Hooker were Nathan Hooker, George Browning for his wife, Benjamin Spruill son of Benjamin. Nathan Hooker and Ann (x) Hooker were executors." I interpret this as follows: The John Hooker, deceased, is the young boy, John Hooker, b. ca. l757, who, at the age of l2, was kidnapped by his brother-in-law, Abram Jennett, in l769 to "New Spain." Remember that in l787, Nathan Hooker, brother of John, petitioned the Gen. Assembly of NC, to settle the title to some land that had been devised to John Hooker, by his father, Stephen. Well, this is the following year, l788. Now, Nathan has gone into Court to have his brother, John, declared legally dead and is attempting to settle the estate. The George Browning or Brownrigg m. Ann Hooker (Amelia Ann), on Oct. 6, l783. Benjamin Spruill, son of Benjamin, is the half-brother of John Hooker. Remember that Rosanna Swain Hooker, widow of Stephen Hooker, m. Benjamin Spruill in l767. The Ann(x) Hooker is apparently the 2nd wife of Nathan. Now, there is also the following: "l96. HOOKER, MARY July Ct. l786. Nathan Hooker was administrator for his wife dec'd. Bondsmen: Benj. Spruill, John Tarkinton. Oct. Ct./ l786. Petition of Nathan Hooker administrator of his dec'd wife Mary. John Sedgix dec'd was father of sd Mary. Sd Sedgix made his will 23 Feb. l768, making a bequest to sd Mary, then the wife of Owen Williams. Ann Sedgix was sd John's wife. Sd Owen Williams died and sd Mary married Joseph Whedbee who died, then marrying the petitioner in July l783. She died. Sd Ann Sedgix died l78-, appointing Hezekiah Spruill and Simon Spruill her executors. Petition to receive his dec'd's wife share ." This 2nd entry clears up a few things. This is Nathan, son of Stephen, who left the will in l766. This is all starting to come together. Also, on p. 49, there is the estate record of Martha Swain, l765. In the division of the estate, l7 Aug. l765, mention is made of the heirs of [her sister], "Elisebeth Hooker." This is Elizabeth Mary (Swain ) Hooker, lst wife of Sheriff John Hooker. I have reached some other tentative conclusions but first, I would enjoy hearing your thoughts on the above. Kyle
