Nadine, I think we might have a match. I can't tell for sure about your two Margarets from the way you presented your information, but is it possible you have two entries for the same Margaret? My information, which is secondhand, indicates that Margaret married Issac Lewis. Your suggestion of a will is interesting. Does it identify any grandchildren by name? Where did William die? Was it in VA or NC. I appreciate your offer to share information and resources, and would very much like to do that. I do not presently have much on the Hookers, but can provide a little information about the Lewis family if that is of interest. Perhaps we can discuss this off-list? Dear Gordon, I am not actively searching the Hookers (from my mother's side) since I can't seem to quit finding my father's ancestors! (Not really complaining!) But I have collected quite a bit of information just here and there. Your query brought to my attention a weird thing I have in my data base. I have two Margaret Hookers who both married a Lewis. Obviously, I have made an error some where! But this is what I have. William Hooker b.ca 1670 James City Island, VA married Bridget Foyer daughter Margaret who married ______ Lewis (This is verified by mention of her and her married name in William's will.) son William II b. ca 1690 Kent, VA married Ann daughter Margaret who married Isaac Lewis (Can this be correct?) I do have a third Margaret Parthenia Hooker b. 1839 whose parents were Nathan Hooker and Julia Ann Wright, but she is too late for your Margaret. I would love to know if you figure this all out and find anything new. I would be happy to share the info I have and my sources with you. I'm new to the HOOKER list, and hopeful that other members may have information on the HOOKER family in VA/NC. My information suggests that Margaret HOOKER married Isaac LEWIS. I don't have details about Margaret, but I believe that Isaac died in 1742 in Bertie County, NC. I believe that Margaret's father was William HOOKER. There are some researchers who have suggested that William was the son of Samuel HOOKER, and that he was born in Farmington, CT. I'm quite skeptical about this, although there were a number of migrations from New England to the south. My research of Farmington HOOKERS indicates that William died in CT. Its possible the CT record is incorrect. For instance, William may have abandoned his family to come south, and was simply recorded as being dead. Again, this seems unlikely. Is anyone tracking HOOKERS in VA or NC in the 1600s? Can anyone identify a William who may have migrated to NC? My information suggests he may have died about 1716 in NC, but I have no documentation to confirm this. I'd love to hear from anyone researching early VA or NC HOOKERS. I'd be happy to share what information I do have. Gordon Kirkemo [email protected]

I have just completed extracting the Hooker and possible Hooker references in early MD wills; they were included in 7 vol. of books, the earliest six of which I have retained to scan for related surnames if anyone wishes. My interest in this line is that my grandmother was Lillie Ann HOOKER b 1887 TN who married James Preston WATKINS. She was daughter of James Willis HOOKER b 1857 Roane CO (now Loudon), TN, and wife Lettice Elizabeth Duncan/Dunkin b 1858 Monroe CO, tN. John Willis Hooker, in turn, was son of John C. HOOKER b ca 1810 MD and wife Rachel GREEN b 1830; John and Rachel were born in MD. It appears that virtually all the families that I have who were in ETN in my mother's side (Hooker/Watkins) came through NC. Now I find that most of them were, likewise, from MD originally. It appears that there is a strong Quaker influence in these lines that took this line of migration. If anyone wants me to scan these records (and about 50 other pages of varied notes) which I copied, please ask. I can do a "find" on my word processor and the process should be easy. I checked out the first 2 vol. last month and failed to copy all the details, but I did retain all information typed concerning the earliest texts. It appears that the Watkins story becomes larger and larger as we see the related surnames and distance they migrated. Please forgive typhos; in order to include all this much material, I had to forsake careful consideration to typing details. Also, many of the early spelling was "rough," as you will see from the records as they go backward in time. These records do go backward in history, as that is the way that we genealogists research. For those who are not familiar with geography around the waters of the early colonies, let me explain that my daughter lives in the Norfolk/Williamburg/VA Beach/Jamestown/Chesapeake/Portsmouth area of early VA and she often takes a bridge/tunnel that goes to Maryland. Furthermore, to the south she lives within ten miles of the North Carolina line. The Potomac River on which our national capital rests is just off the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay of VA reaches almost to the Pennsylvania line near what was in 1750 Chester CO, PA. The James River runs from Jamestown, VA, through the Richmond, VA, area, and into old Augusta CO at Staunton, which was capital of the county of VA that extended to the Miss. River and later became numerous states. Staunton is a short drive from the West VA line (formerly part of VA.) It is worth noting, too, that the early colonies (like later counties and states) disputed much of this territory. In books of "early settlers" of different states I have seen some of the same names for the same dates. One of the early MD records contained the name of "Wm. Penn" (what could be more a PA name?!) and there are numerous wills that refer to land in several early colonies, especially in VA. The Maryland Calendar of Wills: Jane Baldwin, compiler & editor; Wills from earliest times to 1726; Vol. I - VI, Baltimore, Genealogical Publ. Hi, I am looking for information on the parents of Timothy Hooker of Martin county NC. He married a Mary Hooker and was 30 during the 1850 census his children were Ann C., James , Nancy E. and John. I have been told that his parents may be Nathan and Winifred Hooker. Any information on this lineage would be appreciated. -- also if anyone knows, is Timothy Hooker connected to Godfree or William Hooker of the Chowan or Albemarle county area? Thanks for your time
Hi, I'm new to the list and would like to post my HOOKER information. My husband is descended from Sarah "Sally" HOOKER, b. 1813 Wilson CO., TN, who married William EDDINS, II. Sarah HOOKER was the daughter of Benjamin Freeman HOOKER,II and Anne FRIZZELL. Benjamin Freeman HOOKER,II was b.? 1764 in Orange Co., NC. He was the son of Benjamin HOOKER,I, s/oGodphrey HOOKER, who died 1729 in Bertie Co., NC, s/o William HOOKER,I who died 1717 Chowan Co., NC This information was included in a letter written in 1889 by a relative who was the granddaughter of Benjamin Freeman HOOKER,II and Anne FRIZZELL. I submitted this letter to the following web site: http://members.aol.com/genny1/hooker1.html I would greatly appreciate any responses and suggestions. Thanks, Donna Walker Eddins [email protected] TX
