Jane, As I mentioned in the message, you have to click a couple times after you go to www.lamartin.com. First, click "Books and Articles on Florida and Okeechobee County History," and then click "Captain William B. Hooker..." However, the actual article can be accessed immediately by going to www.lamartin.com/history/hooker/william_hooker.htm. Kyle, I didn't see anything on Capt. Hooker when I went to your web site. What do I need to do? I would love to see the info on Captain Hooker. Jane G. Phillips
That's a really nice article on the site below, the photos, etc. add too. I did print out the #3 footnotes. Thanks so much for your work on the Hooker family. I have been working with several sources and have more info on the Hooker family in Greene and hope to post soon. I have recently posted at http://www.lamartin.com a lengthy article on the life and times of Captain William Brinton Hooker (1800-1871). If you go there, click "Books and Articles on Florida and Okeechobee County History," and then click "Captain William B. Hooker..." Capt. Hooker was the son of Stephen Hooker, grandson of James Hooker, great grandson of William Hooker, II (d. 1756), and great-great grandson of William Hooker, I, (d. 1717). Capt. Hooker was one of the early "cattle kings" of Florida and led a very eventful life. I am trying to find information on the parents or siblings of Thaddeus Warsaw Hooker, b: 08 Nov 1823 in Vergennes, Addison, Vermont. He married Susan Malvina Seamans 18 Jan 1846 in Hartland, Niagara, New York, and moved to Canada in 1855. Thaddeus died in Welland, Ont. 02 Nov 1892. This information has been recorded in the family bible, along with notes on his descendants, but there is absolutely no clue as to his parents were. Any help would be most appreciated. margaret
Beau, I see you aready have had a response about Zebulon Vance Hooker. According to my book, PARKER AND BLOUNT IN FLORIDA, p.355, Zebulon Vance Hooker was born May 29, 1890 and died Nov. 15, 1966. He was the son of William Henry "Billie" Hooker and Mahala Clementine (Langford) Hooker. I have the line back to William Hooker I, who d. in Chowan Pct., Albemarle Co., NC, ca. 1717. I have checked my original source and I find that the information was provided in 1972 by Martha Hooker Atkinson of West Palm Beach, FL. She was a niece of Zebulon Vance Hooker and she said that Vance, as he was known, died in Lake Worth, FL, of a stroke and was the father of four children. The wife is listed as "Howard Stevens" which certainly needs to be checked out. I would suggest that you obtain the death certificate of Zebulon Vance Hooker. Lake Worth is in Palm Beach County, FL. If you tie into this line, I have a lot of great information for you. Hello Ernie! Thanks for writing! >I have information on Zebulon Vance Hooker, born in 1890 in Florida and died in Florida (allegedly) in 1923. That's the one I found living in Florida! I could've sworn he lived longer according to the source on the Internet I saw, but I was probably mistaken. Still, 1923 *is* the year my father's father (ZVH the first) supposedly died - according to his mother - in Richmond. >He was one of eight children born to William Henry Hooker and wife Mahala Clementine Langford. Yep, that's the same one I found. Also, my father's original name being "William" is a rather large co-incidence. There seems to be a lot of coincidences for my grandmother's story to hold any water. I'm beginning to suspect that the ZVH you're referring to may be my grandfather and for whatever reason, left my grandmother shortly after my father was born, headed for Florida and died shortly thereafter. >He had a son by the name of William Calvin Hooker that I am very interested in. That may explain why my granmother changed my father's name; ZVH would have had 2 sons named "William"!! I could be wrong, but I'm beginning to suspect he is my grandfather. >I also show a Zebulon Hooker in the 1790 Census of Middlesex County, Mass. Page 152 in Sherburne Town. ID # Mas1a1634629. Yes, I saw him too! Here's a coincidence for you - I believe he served in the Revolutionary War as a drummer. I played drums professionally for years! ;-) >If your Dads wife was named Patricia Patricia was his wife and my mother. She passed away from cancer in April of 1993. She was a very good journalist and person. >or Penny, Penny is my wife. But not for long, unfortunately. After 20 years we are getting a divorce. We have remained childless, fortunately. (or unfortunately!) >I suggest you contact this person ASAP. She may be looking for you and your Dad. I'm sorry, I'm confused; do you mean contacting Patricia (impossible) or Penny - or A.C. Hance?? No mystery with Patricia and Penny. Again, they are my mother and soon to be ex wife. >A.C.Hance. Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Yulee, Florida, USA. A.C.Hance. Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Yulee, Florida, USA. Internet address is [email protected] She also has a GEDCOM File that you can download if you are a member of Ancestry .Com. I am a member now! Please excuse my ignorance; what is a GEDCOM file? >I am quite sure she will answer you right away though. I have been doing Genealogy for nine years now and could give you my opinion as to who your Dads father was but you should read the Gedcom for yourself and then you decide who is who. I believe you will be surprised though. Would it be an imposition to ask you your opinion? I can assure you that only curiosity and not emotion are my motivation. If the answer is a bit, how should I say it, un-savory, that's OK. So it's not like I'd be crushed to learn that this ZVH *was* my grandfather - or not. In the meantime, I will contact LadyHance. If there's any more info I can provide you, I'll be happy to. My father and mother had 3 children; myself (ZVH III), Elizabeth Tyson Hooker, who passed away this past October unfortunately (she was a great person) and Martha Douglas Hooker, who now lives in London, England. She married a Robin Preston and they have 2 children; Lucy and David Preston. Just in case you're interested. Thank you so much!! It was very kind of you to write and again, if you don't mind, I'd very much appreciate your thoughts and opinions on this mystery. Could we be related?? Hmmm - this stuff gets addictive! :) Thanks again Ernie and best wishes! Beau Hooker
Sorry, No Zebulons' in my Hooker line. Steve Bryant
Beau, I have information on Zebulon Vance Hooker, born in 1890 in Florida and died in Florida (allegedly) in 1923. He was one of eight children born to William Henry Hooker and wife Mahala Clementine Langford. He had a son by the name of William Calvin Hooker that I am very interested in. I also show a Zebulon Hooker in the 1790 Census of Middlesex County, Mass. Page 152 in Sherburne Town. ID # Mas1a1634629. If your Dads wife was named Patricia or Penny, and was a journalist, I suggest you contact this person ASAP. She may be looking for you and your Dad. A.C.Hance. Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Yulee, Florida, USA. Internet address is [email protected] She also has a GEDCOM File that you can download if you are a member of Ancestry .Com. If you are not a member, she may send you the file on her own. If she is not available, or does not get back to you, then please get back to me and I can send you the download which you can save it to a disc. I am quite sure she will answer you right away though. I have been doing Genealogy for nine years now and could give you my opinion as to who your Dads father was but you should read the Gedcom for yourself and then you decide who is who. I believe you will be surprised though. Best regards, Ernie Hooker.
Hello Fellow Hookers! This is the first time I've written the list - greetings to all my cousins out there! I was wondering if anyone out there could help me. My name is Zebulon Vance Hooker, III. I am 41 years old and live in Salem, Virginia. My father is, fortunately, still with us. He will be 80 in October. We have a small mystery on our hands and that's why I'm writing in the hopes someone out there may be able to help. My father was not born with the name "Zebulon Vance Hooker, II". His name on his birth certificate is "William Huper Harbaugh Hooker". He did not know this until he was in his mid thirties. He found out when he requested a copy of his birth certificate, and found that the name he expected to see was not there! Fortunately (or no?) his mother was still alive at the time, so he asked her why the "William" name was on his birth certificate. She told him that his father was Zebulon Vance Hooker, and had died of a brain aneurism shortly after my father was born and after my father had been given the name William Huper Harbaugh Hooker. So, she changed his name to his father's name without notifying anyone. He was a baby at the time and never knew otherwise - so he grew up never knowing he had another name. When I was born, he passed it on to me, thus making me the third. His mother was very "eccentric". I'm not entirely sure I believe what she told him. Here's why: We have only one supposed photo of my father's father. It doesn't look anything like him. Supposedly, the "first" ZVH died in Richmond, Virginia (where my father was born) around 1922-23. There is no record of that in the obituaries in the Richmond papers. In fact, I can't find *any* records of him existing in Richmond at all. But I *did* find a Zebulon Vance Hooker in *Florida* - who was born in 1890. That would have made him 30 years old when my father was born. He did not die in Virginia, but Florida, and lived into the '60's, I believe. I wonder what the odds are of TWO Zebulon Vance Hookers living at the same time - one in Richmond (who mysteriously disappeared) and one in Florida? But, stranger things can happen - I just found a "Zebulon Hooker" (not sure if his middle name is Vance or not) who lives - now, I believe, - in Boynton, Florida. His phone number (like mine!) is unlisted. In fact, Florida seems to be *the* happening place for Hookers!! Sorry to ramble! Is there anyone out there who may have some information about a Zebulon Vance Hooker who may have been in the Richmond, Virginia area around 1919-1923 or so?? Does anyone know of the Zebulon Hooker in Boynton, FL?? Any advice on how I might solve this mystery? I can be emailed privately at: mailto:[email protected] Everybody calls me Beau. Thank you all for putting up with this and any help you might be able to provide! Best wishes! Zebulon Vance Hooker, III (Beau) Salem, VA
I last posted my Hookers to the List in January of this year. I have no new information since that time, but I organized what I have a little better. I have not been able to find parents or siblings for John, or a maiden name for Mary. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Some of this information comes from an LDS file and is not proven. I have John Hooker born 15 Jul 1792 in TN, died 25 Feb 1879, Hopkins Co TX. He married Mary (maiden name unknown) born ca 1800 TN or NC, died after 1880 Hopkins Co TX. Marriage date and place are unknown. They had at least 10 children, per early census records. Their children: 1. unknown male born 1815-1820 (?MS) 2. unknown female born 1820 (?MS) 3. unknown female born 1820-1825 (?MS) 4. Elizabeth Ann born 1824 MS; died 1904 5. unknown female born1825-1830 MS 6. Mary Minerva born 1826 MS; died 1 MAR 1904 TX 7. E. Catherine born 1831 TN; 8. Lucretta (Lucretia) born 1833 TN 9. Robert born 1835 TN; died 12 DEC 1910 TX 10. Samuel born 1837 TN My gg > grandmother, Emersley (also found as Emereller and Emerilly) Catherine, married Roderick J. Wicker of Hardin Co TN ca 1850. Apparently the Hooker and Wicker families moved to Texas in two or more "waves" after the Civil War. Most were in Hopkins Co, and Robert Hooker, a > son of John and Mary, was in law enforcement there in 1880. Would love to hear from anyone with TN>TX Hookers. Cindy

Hi cousins, As you are aware, regrettably one of our members has been posting extraneous messages to the list. As a result we have lost some members. I have removed the offender from the list. Apparently they had embedded the HOOKER list address into a group mail address to which they were sending general traffic. If they promise to remove the HOOKER address from the bulk mail block I will allow them to return to the list. If they do it again I will permanently bar them. I apologize for any inconvienience that this has cause you. And I emphasize that rootsweb mail lists are made available only for genealogy messages. Our traffic has been kinda slow, so I invite you to post a messge on your recent research. Patrick J. (2) Don't forget we're all in the same boat. (3) Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark. (4) Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone might ask you to do something really big. (5) Don't listen to critics. Just get on with what has to be done. (6) For safety's sake, travel in pairs. (7) Two heads are better than one. (8) Build your future on high ground. (9) Speed isn't always an advantage; after all, the snails were on the same ark with the cheetahs. (10) When you're stressed, float awhile. (11) Remember, the ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic was built by professionals. (12) Remember that the woodpeckers inside are a larger threat than the storm outside. (13) No matter what the storm, when God is with you, there's a rainbow waiting. --part1_65.2be2b32.261361fc_boundary-- --------------94DCBE4E1BAACA686408A4C7--
