Thanks for the reply, I do not recognize any of that except that my HOOKERS were in Sauk County at that time, as far as the booze, I have a newspaper clipping no date but it had to have been during prohibition, it was where my great grandmother was arrested for running bathtub gin, my grandpa said that she ran a speak easy so I expected to find something. My HOOKER line ties into GOBEN< RITTER < and HARRINGTON and POWERS all in Wisconsin. Jackie
Carole, Yes, I remember Arthur Hooker who lived in British Columbia. I too corresponded with him very briefly long before I developed a serious interest in my ancestry. I think I still have one eight page report from him, but it basically just summarizes the family of Thomas Hooker, founder of Hartford, CT. Your Hooker early history was of interest, that part going to a Henry Hucker, married in Boston in the early 1700s. A Hooker cousin of mine says our grandfather often remarked about descending from a Henry Hooker. (My parents divorced when I was young, so I never heard these stories.) Once I started a vigorous tracing of our line, it led me to a Robert Hucker, living in what became Prince Georges County, Maryland, in the late 1600s. His name was given as Hucker, Hawker and Hooker. His parents are unknown, but I found an old report on a CD-ROM that claimed my Robert's parents were Thomas Hawker and Patience, formerly married to Henry Needham. I have been able to document these three individuals in Maryland during the latter half of the 1600s, but not the names of their children. My Robert Hooker married Amee Selby, then died in Prince Georges County around 1711. Robert's will conveniently listed not only his children, but their birth dates: Samuel, b. October 11, 1699, married a woman named Margaret Elizabeth, b. December 14, 1701, and later married Samuel Pruitt Robert, b. September 11, 1706, married Elizabeth Deakins Amy, b. July 27, 1708 Tom Hooker Orlando
Jackie, My last Hooker was Phillip Augustus Hooker (b. 1839, Paxton, MA), the son of Harvey Hooker and Isabella P. Brown. Harvey was a lush and Isabella divorced him, remarried and in about 1849 moved to Sauk Co. WI with her new husband Orison Thomas. "Gus" took his stepfather's name even though he was never adopted. After the Civil War Gus had corresponded with a Hooker uncle, an M.D. who had begged Gus to take back the Hooker name. Gus said that he had married as a Thomas and fought for his country as a Thomas so he would just keep the Thomas name. This Dr. Hooker also had two sons who were medical doctors, but I don't know who they were. I have his lineage back to Henry Hucker who married in 1708 in Boston. Thirty years ago there was a man who lived in BC, Canada, who was doing extensive Hooker research....way before computers. I corresponded with him for several years and then he became ill and died of cancer. I don't know what became of his research. I think his name was Arthur Hooker. Has anyone out there run across anything of his? Carole <<Carole, you wouldn't happen to be related to the HOOKERS that were in or around Seattle in the 1974 time frame would ya? Or the ones in Willows ranch California 1950, Prineville Oregon 1960 on? Jackie >>
Lee, Have you found any siblings for your Jacob? My first Hooker shows up as Henry Hucker, getting married in Boston, MA in 1708 to Elizabeth Helyer/Hilliard. His estimated birth year is 1685 which might make him a sibling of your Jacob. After more than 30 years of looking I still haven't found the parents or origins of my Henry Hooker. I have seen mention that some of the Hookers may have come from the Isle of Jersey in the Channel Islands as there were some who ran ferries on the MA coast north of Boston. In the index of a book on the Channel Islands under Hooker I found Ocker (they spoke more French than English), Auker, etc. In Ipswich, Essex Co., MA there was a Jacob and a John born to Matthew Hooker and his wife Rachel in the 1680s and '90s. Good luck! Carole in Portland, Oregon
Hello Everyone, Does anyone have information on Hookers in Tennessee, early 1800's? My gr-gr-grandfather James Bennett is thought to have married Rhody Hooker in Greene County TN, 1818. I would appreciate any information that might help with Rhody/Rhoda's family line. When the family migrated to Linn County, Missouri, they settled near Jeremiah Hooker, but I can't find any connection. Thanks, and blessings, Shirley Anderson, Texas

Lee, Thanks, it was worth a shot anyway. I appreciate you checking for my Robert Hooker b. abt 1815. It was kind of you to try for all of us. Well, just got back from Lansing and read the Hooker book. It was written or rather put together, by a great aunt of mine, and it is for the Daniel Hooker decendents. So, I will continue to surf the web for others as it was mostly stuff I already have, and didn't answer anyone else's Hooker questions. I will look to see if anyone has written a book about the Hookers in general. I will see if I can find Thaddeus in my Vermont section. I have been following the recent discussion with some interest, as I have been unable to trace my Hooker history beyond Vermont. Thaddeus Hooker was born November 08, 1823, in Vergennes, Addison co., VT, and despite several years of searching I have not been able to find names of his parents or siblings. Does anyone else have him in their line? margaret
What are dates and places on this Jackson Hooker? I have a Jackson Hooker born 24 April 1793, probably in GA or MS. Father Nathan was born in NC and mother Ann Lackey also born NC. Nathan died in Lawrence Co. MS with a will I think. This is not my Hooker line but was given this information by a reliable source. I do not have a marriage or any other information on him. Thanks so much, Lee. Patsy
Brenda, I have a Nathan Hooker 1763 in Dobbs Co. NC-1825 in Lawrence Co. MS who married an Ann Lackey (sometimes spelled Lockey I understand from Edgecombe??? Co NC) They had sons Richard (from a Richard Lockey/Lackey) Jackson, Nathan who died in Hinds Co. MS, Ambley (male or female?) and Hymerick born 1806 and died in Texas. William runs in this family of Hooker. William died in 1717 Chowan William died in Bertie 1757 William came to Dobbs and died about 1793 He had son William.... Since you mentioned the name Lockey and then your Hooker family was in LA, it sounded like it might be a clue you might want to check on since some of them were down this way. I understand from some other Hooker researchers that this Nathan and Ann Lackey Hooker is pretty well proven, but I haven't seen it. Only have it on good faith from others. Check your Lockey file. Thanks so very much, Lee, I will look forward to any further information about that "Southern Hooker" you can dig up, for it has to be more than I have managed at this time. Jill; When I go tomorrow I will check for him. He is most likely a relative of mine as my mother once lived in Vermontville, Michigan. I am going to Lansing, Michigan tomorrow, which is not far from there. My family came from Mass, to Vermont, to Ohio to Michigan, and some were born on the way in Vermont and Ohio, and your timeline is right for that. OOPS! - Even I'm guilty of misspelling. His first name is most commonly spelled Amon. Thank you, Jill At 07:18 AM 7/4/00 -0700, you wrote: >Dear Hooker Researchers: My Hooker line is one of my biggest brick walls. >If you recognize these names, please let me know. Dear Hooker Researchers: My Hooker line is one of my biggest brick walls. If you recognize these names, please let me know. I've had one person give me some guesses, but can't confirm much. I am a descedant of Almon Hooker who, in the 1850 census for Vermontville, Eaton Co, MI lists his birthplace as Vermont. I know that he was living there at least as early as 1845 and that he had been in Essex Co, NY in 1830. If the census info is correct, he was probably born in the 1790s. In 1850, there is also another man, Ralph Hooker, living in his household. I have been trying for years to figure out who Almon's father might be. Any suggestions??? Don't have much information other than Jackson Harvey HOOKER born 5/27/1836 in PA married Margaret HUGHES born 12/14/46 in Chillocothe, Ross County, Ohio, 6/ 2/1864 in Blooming Grove, Waseca County, MN. Margaret died in 1923 in Weston, WI. They had two children Hiriam William born 4/14/1869 and Maude Mae born 7/22/1877. Patsy
I found mention of three Jackson Hookers, but need more information. One was in Indiana and listed in the 1860 Census, he was Jackson W. Hooker, and one is listed in the SS deaths, and one listed as born 1790-1799, and is listed on the Family Tree Volume #28, which I don't have, but is in libraries. The Family Tree make program is in most libraries and more extensive than the package deals purchased.
