Just found out that my ancestor, Phillip Augustus Hooker, the son of Harvey Hooker and Isabella P. Brown, had an uncle and two cousins who mere medical doctors. "Gus" was born in Paxton, Worcester Co., MA in 1839 and his mother divorced her husband because of alcohol abuse. Young Gus moved to WI with his mother and stepfather, Orrison Thomas and married and fought in the Civil War under the name of Thomas even though he was never adopted. His uncle, Dr. John Hooker pleaded with him to take back the good name of Hooker but Gus chose not to. Is anyone out there familiar with a Hooker family of MDs who were from Worcester Co.? Gus had an uncle Jonathan Wilslow Hooker b. 1812 but I don't know if this is the MD. Carole Hammond, Portland, OR

I am looking for the family of Sarah Hooker b. est. bef. 1790 in Hadley, Mass. (widow of Fellows in New York) married Col. Killian Winne. Lived in Utica, N.Y. Where her first husband ______ Fellows was a merchant. Had a son William Fellows. At least 3 more children with Col. Killian Winne; Killian Winne b.1812 Utica,NY, Frank Winne and George Winne. Her portrait and that of her son William Fellows were painted by Gilbert Stuart. Her mother may have been from the CRANE family of Mass. Family lore says that she was a descendant of Thomas Hooker of Hartfort, Conn. Were there descendants of Thomas Hooker living around Hadley, Mass.?????? Thanks for any help. Lynne Sutter [email protected]
Can any one help with ancestors to Joseph Hooker b. 1671 who married Anna (?). I really would appreciate any help with this brick wall. Thanks, Doug
----- Original Message ----- From: Lynne Sutter Subject: Sarah Hooker Fellows I am looking for information on a Sarah Hooker who married a man with name of Fellows. She was born in Hadley, Mass. in the late 1700's (maybe 1780's or 90's). She had a son William Fellows, a merchant in Utica N.Y. He had a son John Fellows living in Chicago in 1908. Sarah Hooker Fellows portrait was painted by Gilbert Stewart, the famous Am. Artist who studied under Benjamin West. There was reportedly a second portrait done at the time of her son William Fellows who would have been about 3 years old at the time of the painting. My family has the painting of Sarah who was reportedly a direct descendant of Thomas Hooker , founder of Hartford Conn. My connection is through Sarah Hooker's second marriage to Killian Winne. She is my g-g-g-grandmother. Sarah Hooker may have been an aunt to General Joseph Hooker also of Hadley Mass. and of John Hooker who married Isabel Beecher Hooker sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Thanks for any information you might have, Lynne [email protected]
Greetings All! I'm almost at wit's end trying to find more information about my ggf, George H. Hooker. I have a lot of 'We think' information but very little concrete evidence. Maybe someone out there has heard of George or his family??? Anyway, what we've been able to gather thus far: We think George H. Hooker was born on Nov 6, 1858 in Knox County, KY, to James Hooker and Barbary (AKA Barbary) Miller. (James is believed to be either the son of Joseph and Rebecca Hooker OR John and Mariah Hooker (all of NC). For the record, we also know nothing about either parents.) Siblings included: Eliza, b. 1848; Columbus, b. 1852; Martha A., b. 1854; Alice, b. 1860; and Mary, b. 1856. By 1860, the family moved to Scott County, IN. After that, we lose George until 1894. At that time, he and his wife, Elvira Ellen Banks (we have almost no info on Elvira, b. Mar 6, 1863; d. May 6, 1929 in Walnut Ridge, AR) buys a piece of land in Stoddard County, MO (we have a copy of the deed). The plot is along the St. Francis River and we think he operated, for a short time, a ferry since his brother, Columbus, owned a similar piece of land on the other side of the St. Francis. Also by this time, George and Elvira have two living children, Clyde Carter Hooker (my gf-b. Jul ! 12, 1890, d. Dec 12, 1972) and Nona Faye Hooker (b. Jul 1, 1894). (Another, Toby, b. 1888, died young.) Also, we believe that sometime during his life, he was involved in the lumber business, i.e. as a lumberjack. George then died sometime between 1896 and 1900...again, we think! He was buried in Stoddard County in an unmarked grave in a field. No death certificate is available. Elvira went on to marry a Burnett and we think she ran a boarding house in either NE Arkansas or SE Missouri for a time. If anyone has any kind of information on this particular branch of the Hookers, I would be forever grateful and would be willing to share what little I have. Thanks..... Roger Hooker
