No book-length, scholarly-level treatment of his life exists so I hope this work will nicely fill that gap. I'd be curious to know if there are more anecdotal type sources or connections to members of the Colcock family that could help flesh out his life story. In particular, I am interested in obtaining a reproduction quality image of the Colonel’s one known portrait. My great great uncle was Hugh Galbraith who was with Co G of the 56th NY Volunteers out of Ellenville NY. He's also listed as Hugh Gilbrath in error. He was a Coporal who had just re-enlisted a few months before being mortally wounded at the Battle of Honey Hill. He died a few days after the battle on Dec 1st and is buried in Beaufort Cemetery I would love to secure some more information on him, and if a slight chance a picture comes up that would be great! I have gotten all that the 56th NY Volunteers have on their website on him. Thank you Paul Galbraith _________________________________________________________________ Helping your favorite cause is as easy as instant messaging. I am new to the list, so I have no idea what has been discussed before. Is there an archive? I am looking for a little book, with no luck so far: The Battle of Honey Hill, South Carolina, November 30, 1864: an arrangement of edited primary sources, with attached appendices. Montmorenci, S.C., 1999. 87 pp., ill. maps. The only author is given as "Western Carolina Historical Research." Can anyone cast light on this book? Is it anywhere available? I would be glad to pay for even a xerox if the original is not available. I very much appreciate the maps on the Honey Hill home page, but I need the topographic map in greater detail than available on the web site. What is the source of that map? I have not been able to get the Jenkins account of the battle. Can anyone tell me if it is available anywhere but the archives in South Carolina? I am sorry to start out with so many requests and questions, but I shall be grateful to any help anyone may be able to proffer. Cordially, David MacDonald djmacdo@ilstu.edu
I too am glad that Honey Hill is now a historic landmark. My g,g,g grandfather fought and was wounded there. He served in the 127th New York. One day I hope to make a trip down that way and re-trace his steps. Janice Guy
Bob, Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone! Otherwise a Yankee like me would never have known! :) I think it's a shame there isn't going to be reenactment of the battle....what can we as a group do about it? There must be something, there are museum curators and state and/or county historians on our list. Someone send me contact info for SC politicians and I will start emailing :) Paula Garlock List Admin. SharpesBean@aol.com
