To those of you looking for John W. Holt: Most of you have the information from the Holt book by Early so I will just put in the following paragraph from the book and then continue with the will for Ann Cosby and my thought's. Hope this helps and would love to hear back from you and get your ideas. " He is very desirous of seeing you if you think it worth while come and see him. He says he wishes he was with you. He feels very dejected at times on account of his conduct. He has all three children with him to struggle for. Your cousin Sally Cosby was married not long after you went away to William Price. They have no children nor never had. Jane Cosby has four children. They are all well. So no more but remain your sincere friend, John Slaughter." On my trip to Salt Lake in the fall of 1999 I came across the following will of Ann Cosby of York Co., Virginia dated 11 November 1792. In the name of God Amen, Ann Cosby of York County widow being this the abundant mercy and goodness of God, tho' weak in body yet of a sound and perfect understanding and memory do constitute this my last Will and Testament and desire it may be received by all as such. Imprimis, I most humbly bequeath my Soul to God my Maker, beseeching his most gracious acceptance of it through the all sufficient merits and mediation of my most sompassionate Redeemer Jesus Christ who gave himself to be an attonement for our Sins and is able to save to the utmost, all that come to God by himself he ever liveth to make interssion for them and who I trust will not reject me a returning penitent Sinner, when I come to him for mercy in this my confidence I render upon my Soul with Comfort humbly beseeching the most blessed and glorious Trinity, one God most holy most merciful and gracious to prepare me for the time of my dissolution, and then take me into that peace and rest and in comparable felicity which he has prepared for all those that love and fear his holy name Amen blessed be God. Imprimis I give my body to the Earth from whence it was taken in full assurance of its Resurrection from thence at the last day As for my burial I desire it may be decent without pomp or State at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named who I doubt not will manage it with all prudence. As to my wordly Estate I will and positively order that all my debts (if any) be paid. Item I give to my loving Grandson John Mackand the sum of one Shilling Sterling The Rest of my estate consisting of chattels and Household furniture to be equally divided between my three grand Children Viz John Holt, Matthew and Thomas Holt. I do constitute the two eldest Viz John Holt and Matthew Holt my Executors of this my last Will and Testament and Trustees for the youngest Viz Thomas Holt, In Witness whereof I have set my hand and Seal the 11th day of November on thee year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety-two. Signed Sealed and Delived in the presence of Elizabeth Booth, John Booth and Elizabeth (X) Cosby Signed by Ann (X) Cosby At a Court held for York County the 17th day of February 1794. This Will was proved by the oaths of John Booth and Elizabeth Cosby Witnesses thereto sworn to by John Holt and Matthew Holt Most of the information that I have on John W. Holt came from the Holt-Bennett book by Early. She, among others, think that John W. Holt was the son of John Holt, son of John s/o John, son of John, s/o Randall Holt but I don't believe so. I THINK he could be the son of either John Holt or Matthew Holt, sons of Thomas Holt and Ann Jones. The reason being, the name Mathew, which was not a common name in our Holt line but was the known son of Thomas and Ann. Matthew was born 1740 and John was born in 1743. This gives us a possible time frame. Hope this helps, AndreaGen@aol.com
