Here I go again: I have John W HOLT listed in my documentation as being from two different "places of birth." If anyone can make any sense of this, opinions and thoughts welcome! Here goes: John W HOLT: From his journal notes he lists that he was born in York Co., VA. May 1762. He left "his place of nativity" Sept 16, 1794 during the Whiskey Rebellion and ended up settling in Uniontown, Springfield Twp, Fayette Co., PA and married Susanna COBUN (COBURN) and had ten children. In John's journal he writes that he never knew his parents and was raised by his grandparents (maternal or paternal I do not know!). There has been many individuals (even those included on this HOLT list) researching John W HOLT and placing his birth and connections to the Randall HOLT line, Hogg Island, Surry, VA. Even John W's grandson, Samuel states that John was born on Hogg Island. John stated in handwritten letters that he had two older brothers (must have shared the same mother since she died ten days after John was born!) named Mathew and Thomas. Those names are Randall HOLT line names as well. Now, after all these years of researching John and proving his place of birth and parentage, I have given some thought to the fact that John possibly was born in York Co, NOT Surry Co. Is anyone researching John W HOLT? His parents? siblings? I would like to discover and figure out this puzzle before I leave this world! Is anyone else out there having the same scenario? Has anyone studied the creation dates of York and Surry Counties Virginia with relation to the births of HOLT family members? Also, has anyone considered whether the county boundaries were clearly known at the time or was there confusion? If it has not been done yet, I'll explore the info this weekend...
