I have not researched the descendants of James M. Holt but am very interested in this line to fill in my Holt research. >From the journal of James Holt it states the following. "My Grandfather Davis and my father settled together. Grandfather, James Holt, settled in Montgomery County; Moses Read, my grandmother Holts father, settled in Dickson County. When I was about twelve years old, my great-grandfather Read got up a dinner for his children and grandchildren. I sat at the head of the table, being the eldest of his great-grandchildren. There were about eighty present of his descendants; the Holts, Reads, Harveys, Silivents, and Davis's were all relatives. My grandfather, James Holt, had two sons: Jesse and Labon and six daughters: viz., Mary Sarah, Lydia, Anna, Elizabeth, and Patay. Mary married Burges Wall; Sarah married Balum Bull; Lydia married Levitt Morris; Anna married Ona Harvey; and Elizabeth married Ona Silivents. I never knew of Patay's marriage. Laban went to the West Tennessee, and married but I never learned of his wife's name." Martha or "Patsy" "Patay" was the Aunt of my 3rd great-grandfather James 1804-1894 and the sister to his father James Holt who was married to Lydia Read. To all person whom it may concern, Know ye by these present that I James Holt of the county of Fayette & State of Tennessee for & in Administration of the love & affection which I have & bear unto my daughter Martha Holt of the County and State aforesaid... this maintaince & pre? of the said Martha Holt my daughter & also for ? causes & considerations here unto moving have given & granted b & by these presents doth give & grant unto the sd Martha Holt two Negroes (viz, Charity and her son Sam Wilis?, to have hold & possess fully & after my desease the sd negroes to remain in my possession & use until after my death .... to keep them, and then to sd Martha Holt her heirs Executors......& then only proper use & behoof forever to use and dispose of at her will & pleassure from time to time & at all times, and I the sd James Holt do warrent the negroes aforesaid fully & compleatly absolutely & entirely unto her the sd Martha Holt.... 27 day of April 1838 [Fayette Co., Deed of Gift, film 1003156 p.348] In court records of Fayette Co., TN, Nov 1841, p.198: Laban Holt is appointed admin estate of Patsy Holt, dec'd. He is appointed guardian to James and Albert Holt minor orphans of Martha Holt, dec'd; James F. Bell and D. P. Cowan securities for $2400. If this is Labon's sister this would mean that she wasn't married as the children had the Holt name or she married a Holt. Needs to be checked out further. Old film number 5651 FTennH3C p409-sent by Montess Gregerson: Hardman Co. TN Personally came before me Jas. R. Houston an acting Justice of the peace for said county. Mrs Lydia Holt, Labon Holt, James Holt all of Co. of Fayette & state aforesaid (all formerly of Co. of Halifax & state of N.C.) & after being duly sworn do ? & sayeth that they were well (p387) acquainted in N.C. with Ransum Bass a notable man about 33 yrs old abt 5'10" high who was born of a free Mulatto woman in N.C. by the name of ? Harvey in the state of N.C. who brought said Ranson Bass to state of Tennessee, Dickson Co. & further these deponents sayeth not & with given under hands & seals this 8 Apr 1835. Signed James Holt, Lydia Holt, Labon Holt This further proves that Laban son of James & Lydia were all living in Fayette Co., TN at this time. Note: They stated they were from Halifax Co., NC so they are not the Holts of Orange Co., NC Enough for now but would love to know more about Martha's children, James and Albert. Andrea
