Ron, I can't place him just yet; but am working on all desc of RW Pvt. Reuben Holt of Orange Co., NC, who moved to Montgomery Co., TN (adjacent to Dickson Co.), where he has a huge progeny. Have you checked the 1906 death cert, or does TX have them for 1906? (Sometimes gives parents' names!). I'll keep looking, and let me know if you have any more clues. Cleo. cdmhogan@usit.net
Hi Cleo, Actually, I am a novice at this. I only briefly thought about a TX death certificate, but dismissed it. I have been in touch with other researchers who are working on this line, and all have became stuck with James M. Holt and who his father was. There have been many suggestions, that at this point I still dismiss. It is suggested by some that he was illegitimate, with even a couple naming whom they thought might be his father. Others have suggested that since his mothers maiden name was Holt also he was part Indian, and took his mothers last name. I have always been an American history buff, and what causes me to dismiss either of those theories is really simple. In the 1850 census, he was shown a being worth $30,000.00 in property. In the early to mid 1850's that was quite a bit of value. Also, he married into what appears to be a wealthy influential family, the Marsh's. That has not happened very frequently in American history prior to the 1950's, let alone happening in that time span in a southern state such as TN. If either theory are proven to be true, it would be a quite rare occurrence. It is known that the two Holt lines crossed in this part of TN during the time spans in question. It is my theory that they intermarried. I have nothing to support this theory yet, except for one thing in the guardianship papers of him and his brother Albert G. Holt. Their mother descends out of the English line of Holt's, and guardian ship was given to her brother Laban. She was mentioned twice in the papers once as Margaret and once as Patsy. Both times her last name was spelled Hold, but everyone else's including the boys was spelled Holt. I have found that rather curious. I do realize it can be a mis-spelling, but the fact it was done twice with the same person and no one else is pretty coincidental. Again, though I have no evidence other than gut instinct to support this. Any help you can give would be more than greatly appreciated. The name "Hold" would suggest that the person was of German origin. The "Holts" who were in the Chatham and St. Asaph's districts in Orange County, NC in the 1790 census were of German origin and their original immigrant ancestor was "Hans Michael Hold" who Anglicized his name to "Michael Holt" shortly after he arrived in VA in 1717. Nevertheless, the name "Hold" does appear from time to time until well into the 1800s in connection with this line. Some descendants of this line did stop in eastern TN in the very early 1800s and some of them moved on to the Bedford County, TN area by about 1810. If my memory is correct, an English "Holt" line did move direct to eastern TN from VA. If these two lines inter-married, it may be impossible to get them straightened out.
