    3. Betty: There has always been a mystery about the parents of Hiram Holt. When Boddie published his research on the Holt line, his information for the family unit of Thomas and Ann Arrington Holt contains many errors. One of the biggest errors is the marriage of Temperance Holt to Jesse Holt, her cousin. Temperance was the daughter of Joseph Holt; Jesse was the son of James Holt. Jesse Holt left Halifax County with his father before any of Temperance's children were born and Jesse Holt had already married Elizabeth Davis before he left North Carolina. James Holt's history and genealogy is very well documented by the family since his grandson, James, the son of Jesse, migrated to Utah with the LDS church. Jesse Holt IS NOT the father of Temperance Holt's children. There is a published narrative from James Holt, the son of Jesse, where he documents his ancestry to his grandfather, James Holt. For those who are researching the James Holt line (son of Thomas and Ann Arrington Holt), there is a wealth of information available through the Utah Historical Society on this family unit. I only wish the Halifax County Holts who remained in NC had as much documentation!!!! I could be wrong but I don't believe anyone has proof concerning the father of Temperance Holt's children before she married James Parker. There is a court order as below: Halifax Court Minute Docket beg. 1865, page 40: "May term 1866 J.W. Holt and others to The Court: On motion it is ordered by the Court that Andrew Gunter, Braswell Britt, Wright Wiley and W. K. Pittman be appointed commissioners to divide the lands described in the petition into equal parts or shares, and to allot to each of the petitioners J.W. Holt, Eaton Holt and James H. Parker one share ??? (couldn't read name) Parker and wife Nancy one share , and to W. H., Hiram and Ann Marie Holt (Wallace) one share, and if no division, to sell, etc." I've requested a copy of this actual petition from Halifax County but have not received it yet but this action confirms what I have always believed from other documents, that Hiram Holt, Sr., was the son of Temperance Holt and this unknown father. In the petition above, the court is ordering a division into five equal parts: One to J. W. Holt, one to Eaton Holt, one to James H. Parker, one to Nancy Holt Parker (wife of James Parker - not the James H. Parker listed already) and one share to the children of Hiram Holt (who was deceased by this time): William Henry, Hiram, Jr., and Ann Marie Holt Wallace. Except for Hilby and Hillard Holt, this is a division of land amongst Temperance Holt Parker's children, including Hiram, identified by Boddie as her children under Jesse Holt. Frankly, I think these children were illegitimate children of a Neville father and there is some indication of that from how Hiram named his first son, Reddin N. Holt, matching Reddin Holt, the son or brother of Jesse Neville. Anyway, I'm trying to research this further but from the above court order, the MOST apparent proof of Hiram's mother is that she was Temperance Holt. Hiram's wife was Wealthy Ann Irby. That's where the Irby comes into my line. I've seen postings to the Holt list that indicate Hiram was the child of Mary "Polly" Holt and an unknown Holt father based on the above court order but there is simply no connection between Mary "Polly" Holt's children and those mentioned in this action except, perhaps, that they were cousins. If anyone has the above court petition, I wish they would publish it on the Holt list. Sue Thompson sthomps61@alltell.net

    1. [HOLT-L] Thomas Holt & Ann Arrington question?
    2. Joseph & Flora
    3. Sue, I was told several years ago (I believe it was from someone on this list) that the John W HOLT I have been researching- his possible parents were Thomas HOLT and Ann Arrington. I too have found errors in several family history's that I have read (including Boddie's) concerning this family including Abigail Holt's family history as well. (I found my direct line in her book with several errors). I have been searching for the parents of John W HOLT born 1769, (in his own writing, of York Co, VA) and have not come away with much success, but many confusing possibilities! Many have stated that John W was born in Surry Co as well, so that has added to my confusion! Do you or anyone know of a family history, DAR records, will, any record that might exist (at SLC or anywhere else for that matter) documenting John W HOLT'S lineage? Hey, I've been "stuck" on this one for years, and I haven't given up yet!!! Thanks in advance for any assistance.
