Yes, in 1870 Samuel and Mary were living in Alton, IL. He was a blacksmith. They are listed as "Datley" in that census. Took me the devil of a time to find it! There is a lot of German background in Alton and I suspect the census taker was German. My grandmother was born in Missouri, the two older children were born in Illinois. I think Sam settled in Alton after he mustered out of the Union army (!) in 1864. Carol Canham Harker
