    2. Helene Pockrus
    3. Will, dated March 24, 1779 names wife, Ann, his brother Henry Holt and Henry Holt's children Claramond, Leander, Sarah and Thomas. No children listed - probably childless. Self description: "James Holt, son of Thomas Holt, born at Hog Island, Surry Co., Virginia. At present in Norfolk, Attorney at Law." He was born about 1710 and attained manhood, moved to Norfolk from Surry Co. before 1752, dying in Norfolk 1779. On Sept. 29, 1753 he married Ann Osheal, a widow, and daughter of Samuel Boush, Sr. In his will, dated Jan. 5, 1779 and proved Sept. 28, 1801 he gave his law books to the Corporation of Norfolk in trust for the Court of the County of Norfolk, and the gentlemen lawyers practicing in said court. He made bequests to his wife, Anne, and to his brother Henry's daughter "Provided she did not marry a Scotchman" and his sons (Henry's) James and Henry, and in a codicil gives legacies to Leander, Sarah and Thomas, children of his brother Henry "By his last wife", and to Solomon Shepperd and Elizabeth his wife, testator's daughter-in-law (step-daughter). James Holt was a member of the House of Burgesses from Norfolk 1772 and 1774; of the Conventions of 1775-1776; and on Dec. 7, 1776 was made one of the three Judges of the Admiralty Court. He was also a member of the first Senate. (Virginia Magazine of History, Vol. V, p. 454). In an affidavit for bounty land in 1831 it was proved in Petersburg by the testimony of Clarimond Colquhoun that James Holt, Deceased, was the elder brother of Henry Holt, Midshipman in the State Revolutionary Navy and that William C. Holt was the only child of James Holt. Clarimond Colquhoun was of course the sister of James and Henry Holt mentioned in the will of Judge James Holt. She married 1st in July 1782, Robert Peter, who died in 1791.
