Baker summoned to give acct of their riotous assembling at ye church of Lawne's Creek on 12th of br (hr?) last - says he came of his owne simple head & invited Geo. Peeter to the meeting. Roger Delke - appeared on complaint of Wm. Sherwood sub Sherriff of this county - this day said we will (spoken a terrifeing manner) burn all before one shall suffer. Said they met at the Church by reason their taxes were so unjust would not tell who invited him & Cyder which they never had. Others agreed except Michael Upchurch, Robt. Lacy said WM. HANCOCK, carried him to meeting at Dwell's Field, said he was at meeting at church & Jno. Sheppard told him of it. Jno. Gregory acknowledged he was at church: that he heard at Samuell Cornell's by Samuell Haydon that the levies were unreasonable & there would be a meeting to redress them. Tho. Clay said WM. HANCOCK told him there was a warrant out for him & was also the first that told him that the levies were unreasonable & about meeting He was at the Church WM. HANDOCK was at meeting at the Church but was very obstinate about who told him. Etc. Geo. Peeters was at Church meeting, that James Chissett that morning asked him to go to the church to the meeting Michll. Upchurch was at meeting at Church, but tells no more. Mathew Swann was at the Church 12th hr. last - meetng was to agree about redress from their taxes, when asked how he knew their taxes were unreasonably laid said Mr. Mason told him & also Mr. Goring. Said Mr. Goring said he would be at meeting if he did not go from Home, Obstinate about lawfulness of meeting & that all or most of ye County were of his minde. Jan. 3, 1673/4 Jno. Greene was at meeting at church denys to declaire who first told him of it. Wm. Little went with Jno. Barnes to Meeting at the Church. Jno. Sheppard was with others who agreed to meet at ye Church to be redressed from their leveys, - said he heard the leveys were unjust by Samll. Corneill who was told so by MR. HOLTE (so Corneill said) John Barnes was at the Church - says he heard the Leveys were unreasonable by Every Body. Wm. Tooke was at meeting at Church denys by whom he first heard leveys unreasonable, etc. Warrant to take them into custody until they give security for their appearance at Ware Neck on Tuesday the 6th inst. at the Court there to keep peace etc. (signed) Law.
