How far are you in the Holt line already. Since your surname is not Holt, your DNA would only be good to check out your Smith relationships. The Y chromosome is used for this purpose and it is passed down from father to son every generation virtually without change right along with the surname. If you had some male Holt cousins their DNA Y Chromosome profile would match mine and every other related Holt male (unless there was an illegitimacy or adoption in the their line somewhere).
