What I did was to have my father participate in the National Geographic Genographic project(https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/?fs=www5.nationalgeographic.com ). For males you can either have them test the x chromasomes (DNA from the mothers side) or Y Chromasomes (male line of DNA). I had the Y Chromasomes tested. When I got the results they told me that if I wanted to share the information to click a box and it was shared with familytreedna.com. then I went to familytreedna.com and found I could see who else I was a match with or I could also join a group. I joined the Holt DNA group where you can see other Holts DNA groupings and get a feel for which family you are most closely aligned with. (http://www.holtfamilydnaproject.com/) The other option is to go to familytreedna.com direclt (http://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx? ) and order tests through them. I believe the costs are about the same. At the time the cost was $99/kit. If you go to the national geographic site you will see that your purchase of a kit goes towards a bigger gene research project looking at migration patterns and collecting DNA samples from remote populations around the world. It is all very intersting. I assume that over time I will learn more about the family as more people participate. You will not learn details about recent family....but you will get a rough idea on where people came from... and how they migrated over thousands of years. Neat stuff Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
